Confusion is abounding over the latest cases of COVID-19 in the Yukon.
Confusion is abounding over the latest cases of COVID-19 in the Yukon.
The Yukon government announced Friday evening that one positive case had been identified in Whitehorse.
A second case, which is a presumed positive, is related to that case, bringing a total of 71 confirmed cases and one presumed positive case in the territory.
The unwelcome news comes after a four-week lull that indicated the virus was virtually eradicated in the Yukon.
Case 71 is linked to an outbreak in an unidentified industrial worksite outside of the Yukon.
The person is a Whitehorse resident who, judging by the news release, returned to Whitehorse on the Air North 544 flight from Vancouver to Whitehorse between 11 a.m. (PST) and 2:25 p.m. (MST) on Feb. 7.
The presumptive case, which is identified as Case 72, is a household contact of the person from the Air North flight, according to Pat Living, a spokesperson for Dr. Brendan Hanley, the Yukon chief medical health officer.
The confusion begins over the exposure notices accompanying the two cases.
Hanley’s staff initially issued exposure notices for the following locations: Save-On-Foods, between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Feb. 11, as well as on Air North flight 544.
Later in the weekend, those exposures were expanded to include three more locations and dates:
• The running track at the Canada Games Centre on Feb. 4 between 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.;
• Whiskey Jack’s Pub & Grill, dining room and off sales on Feb. 6 between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and
• Better Bodies on Feb. 8 between 5:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.
The dates for the Canada Games Centre running track pre-date the arrival of the Air North flight, as does the Whiskey Jack’s date.
Since the confirmed case is the person arriving on the plane, the inclusion of the dates for the centre and Whiskey Jack’s is puzzling.
When government officials were asked about the confusing dates, Living would only say in an email that “Case 72 was a household contact of Case 71.
“In an abundance of caution, we have backed up the exposure notices. As we have in the past, we will release only the information that the public needs to know for public health reasons in order to protect the privacy of individuals.”
The Star attempted to clarify Living’s statement without success.
Both people are self-isolating at home.
Over the weekend, the government also announced the Yukon has been promised by federal officials that 16,100 doses of the Moderna vaccines will be shipped by the end of the month.
That is similar to announcements made by Yukon government officials before New Year’s that did not materialize.
Premier Sandy Silver and Health and Social Services Minister Frost said in a news release that “we have received confirmation the Yukon will receive 16,100 doses of the Moderna vaccine by the end of the month.
“The mass clinic for all eligible Yukoners will open in Whitehorse as soon as possible following the arrival of these doses. Opening the clinic to all Yukoners 18 and older reduces barriers for vaccine access, which aligns with recommendations that the greatest way to protect the community is to immunize as many individuals as quickly as possible.”
In the statement, Silver and Frost said “our planning teams are already at work to redesign clinic dates and delivery schedules so we can open up the Whitehorse clinic to all residents.
“Today’s commitment is very good news for Yukon. We are happy to know more doses are coming and the mass clinic will be open for all eligible Yukoners.
“We will share more information about when Yukoners can book appointments shortly.”
As of last Wednesday, 6,414 people had been tested in the Yukon.
As of the end of that day, 11,434 doses of the Moderna vaccine had been administered in the Yukon. This number includes 10,604 first doses and 830 second doses.
From Feb. 3 to last Wednesday, there were 132 people tested at the COVID-19 Testing and Assessment Centre.
In terms of enforcement statistics, the government had received 1,436 complaints as of last Wednesday:
• failure to self-isolate: 801;
• gatherings over 10 inside or 50 outside: 38;
• failure to transit through Yukon in 24 hours or stay on their designated route: 436;
• businesses failing to comply with orders: 14;
• failure to abide by declaration form: 26;
• failure to wear a mask: 85; and
• failure to physical distance: 36.
There have been a total of 48 charges and 39 people charged under the Civil Emergency Measures Act (CEMA).
The number of total incoming travellers as of last Wednesday was 69,948. They were comprised of:
• resident travellers: 18,917;
• B.C. residents: 15,668;
• N.W.T. residents: 508; and
• other approved jurisdictions: 388.
The number of decals distributed indicating out-of-territory vehicles allowed in the Yukon was 380.

Hey Jake...I would much rather have heated discourse Vs. personal attacks.
That said..."Seems more like a 100% personal attack, which I can take."
Which I most certainly can, and do not just here but in the real world...often.
Funny thing though, in the real world when I stand up and make my voice heard on whatever person X spews? I make folks real real nervous as SO MANY do not like being challenged. Often they cry foul, call the hurt feeling police act as victims of violence wail victimhood and act well doing it.
CoW SOP actually.
Discourse is always better, but some balls need be busted in the style I use.
I am very proud of my skill sets and use them daily everywhere I go and cross paths...with entitled, arrogant, office abusing, state actors and SJW soldiers.
Oddly enough not one character here is directed at the Yellow Stripe crew (M), thus far they have been completely reasonable and I suspect ALSO tired of the political theater, the Karen's & Chads hitting panic buttons etc.
OJW proudly melting snowflakes and busting balls whilst looking for Dragons to slay, metaphorically clearly as just like complete germ safety and safe spaces.
...Dragons are Fig Newtons of ones over active imagination.

Hey Josey, hey sheepchaser, I sincerely LOVE watching you guys spar, you both have good stuff. Please don't let your positions become too personally focused, the loss of relative objectivity by either of you would be a shame.
I tend to lean towards Josey more than sheepchaser overall, but sometimes I can't deny the arguments you make on the other side. My opinions are often based on stereotypes or values that need to be challenged now and then.

So, when are these pointless covid restrictions ending in the Yukon?
Let's compare results of covid restrictions vs no restrictions.
Florida which removed all covid restrictions in September has been doing much better than other states like California and NY that mandate masks and lockdowns:
“Florida’s COVID-19 response has outperformed lockdown states on excess deaths, education, and the economy”
https://rationalground.com/floridas-covid-19-response-has-outperformed-lockdown-states-on-excess-deaths-education-and-the-economy/?fbclid=IwAR04ZJeSB-WX91gBmaVh86Xmx1m8OZn3F1yemZNpfNLGVb876WphsPm8Wis
Also note that the covid curves for all those states are in steep decline from early January onward. That was BEFORE mass covid vaccination began. How do medical experts explain that? They don’t.

Unless people are symptomatic they don't spread Covid. We have been duped. The basis behind all these useless mitigation efforts has been that asymptomatic people will spread the disease if you pass them on the street. NONSENSE !! In a meta-anaysis of 54 studies that included 77,758 participants it was found that EVEN WITHIN HOUSEHOLDS, the chances of a coughing and hacking (symptomatic) patient passing the disease on to another household member was 18%. BUT.....if the patient was asymptomatic, the likelihood that they would pass on Covid to another person IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD was..... 0.7% End this bulls**it NOW!

How did we get sold into this notion of a 'pandemic'? With 'statistics'!
"Dr. Ezike explained that anyone who passes away after testing positive for the virus is included in that category.
"If you were in hospice and had already been given a few weeks to live, and then you also were found to have COVID, that would be counted as a COVID death. It means technically even if you died of a clear alternate cause, but you had COVID at the same time, it's still listed as a COVID death. So, everyone who's listed as a COVID death doesn't mean that that was the cause of the death, but they had COVID at the time of the death." Dr. Ezike outlined."

Well everyone, it’s a sad day. I’m sorry to have to tell you that our beloved Josey Wales is no more. Having refused the vaccine and therefore lacking the necessary part of Bill Gates’ alien DNA required to carry forward as a United Nations approved human, he/she/it has been recycled. You can enjoy a fractional portion of Josey’s particular brand of sweaty, cheesy, boozy and bitter aftertaste as part of the new Next Meat breakfast sandwich at MermaidCoffee. Not to worry, his inherent nutrients like salt, non-ironic irony and recycled Roger Stone stem cells have been exposed to gamma radiation. Science is confident that involuntary celibacy is not contagious.

My Opinion on Feb 17, 2021 at 12:48 pm
@Martin
It was the same in the 80's with Aides. I think a lot of people could have been saved from death if they had been told who was Positive. But no it was fine for them to run around and knowingly infect others in the name of privacy. Maybe their privilege as gender benders had something to do with it as well.

No Baffled! If they adjust the infection rates then that will increase the death rate by percentage. We will be thrown into mandatory lockdowns because the virus is now more deadlier than they first thought!
These are Liberals running the show after all.

I remember when exposure alerts meant that we should be wary of people in trench coats with bare legs.
Now it tells us to simply be wary of others more generally.
It’s getting a little manic with all this panic about a shamdemic with rules polemic...
Shoals of fish swimming in their little bait balls while the political predators blow bubbles in their faces before they circle around to come up from below them to swallow them hole... No hook, line and sinker this time... Just straight in your face corralling of the public mind...
Meanwhile back at the Liberal Government labs scientists are looking to create a fish/sheep hybrid... It will be called Sheepish in honour of the new citizens... Baaa, baaa, baaad thoughts...

So this supposed infected person went to the bar, worked out at gyms & grocery shopped. So they were not sick? The WHO announced Dec 14, 2020 that the PCR tests were not accurate. Therefore this means there is a lot of infection rate #'s that will need to be reexamined and removed.

Our soon election already has been "tweaked" to facilitate a "state keeps us safe"

Oh that state, so concerned for our health and safety they are....
Folks, not going to subject you to that spiel today on what our state actors are acting on.

Charge this person for not self isolating, It’s the law - and make their name public. If you get a charged and fined for not removing snow from your sidewalk, your name can go public.

So we see as an example Dr. Hanley how a simple two case scenario can get fubared beyond truth. What would we do if a superspreader came through one of our loosely held borders and then you were required to trace the works? The new variant viruses have been shown to spread at significantly greater rates than the originals so you might want to figure on that also. We are as one.

You ask for comments from people that could cause them trouble about something like this event and then you put there comments out to the public with no regard for their privacy or protection. Yet you will not publish the names of the people that break the law so that others can protect themselves from them. This makes no sense.

Yes confusion abounds. Don’t bother asking Pat Living how someone could expose his germs to Yukon before he even got here. It’s on a need to know basis. This is exactly why people are looking to other sources for answers to what they need to know. There’s much more reliable information out there, too, for people who want the truth.

I guess the new variants are so contagious that you can be exposed even before the virus carrier hits town! Next week a newer variant will infect if the carrier even thinks of Whitehorse. The medical and political powers that be can thank communication like this for why so many are “vaccine hesitant.” I will not put that in my body.

Unbelievable and Yukoner nailed it on Feb 15, 2021 at 7:30 pm
You know what's really sad? Case 71 is from out of Yukon, working at an industrial site out of Yukon. But who suffers? All of us who haven't travelled or put ourselves at any kind of risk. We go shopping, or out for a burger, or to the gym. or track and we have to think of you, traveller and housemate of traveller--because clearly you don't think of us.
Yukoner nailed it -- whole CGC is contaminated by this one individual. And Unbelievable nailed it too--how are we to trust our government when consequences don't happen for these people who go to the gym, shopping, carry on with their lives when they have been mandated to quarantine 14 days. And yes if you live in the house with a traveller, you must quarantine too. Hope karma will bite the folks who don't take this seriously and put us all at risk. I work everyday with multiple people in my space - stop putting us all at risk with your reckless, selfish behaviour!

I am confused as well. It was my understanding that a person arriving from Vancouver or elsewhere had to self isolate for 14 days. Does this only apply to certain people or have the regulations changed? Funny that this wasn’t mentioned in the article. Maybe I missed something but going to Whiskey Jacks etc. doesn’t sound like isolating to me.

Dear Unbelievable - In case you missed the memo there are no more Universal Rules. Everything is now relative and fluid. Society only tolerated rules for some - We will let you know who “they” are, maybe?!?! Criminals are no longer criminals, there are no more genders, feelings override reason, desire trumps restraint, my rights are more right than yours, and war is peace... So peace out maybe!
Exception is the rule. Covid schmovid! Nobody really takes Covid Seriously except for the authoritarian benefactors depending on the political points involved - Seriously! It really is that simple - How does application of the rule benefit or not benefit me? There are no more considerations of right and wrong - Those are white colonizer attitudes.
Get on the flux!!!

It's beyond ridiculous to restrict a whole population for a disease so severe that... you have to be tested to know you have it. This has to stop, now. Lockdowns are way more harmful than the covid virus.
Yes, some people with pre-existing conditions get severe symptoms from covid-19, but there are better ways of addressing this, i.e. focused protection for the vulnerable ones (look up the Great Barrington Declaration), prevention with Vitamin D and Zinc. There are medications with decades-long record of safety which have shown to be effective anti-virals, such as Ivermectin, which is cheap and already available worldwide.
