COVID-19 cases crest 4,000 mark

The Yukon has hit a rather undesirable milestone.

By Whitehorse Star on April 14, 2022

The Yukon has hit a rather undesirable milestone.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the territory has had 4,000 known cases of COVID-19. That represents nearly a 10th of the Yukon population.

Twenty-four people have died from the virus since December 2020.

The latest figures show 82 active cases and 14 overnight from Tuesday.

The testing positivity rate remains stubbornly high at 37.6 per cent.

The acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, has said a good positivity rate would be approximately five per cent.

The figures are based on PCR testing, which have been restricted considerably since January.

Meanwhile, Yukon public health officials are offering advice to territorial residents for the Easter long weekend.

Dr. Jesse Kancir, replacing Elliott during her vacation, issued the following statement Wednesday.

“With the long weekend approaching and increased COVID-19 risk across the Yukon, it’s as important as ever to consider your COVID-19 risk before attending a dinner party, cultural or faith-based gathering or other Easter or spring event,” Kancir cautioned.

“Use your COVID-19 sense to assess your risk before gatherings so that you can help protect yourself and others.”

Kancir expanded on his advice.

“Thinking about five key factors can help you assess your risk,” he said.

“These factors include vaccination status, people, space, time and place. Staying up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines, including a booster dose, provides the greatest protection from severe illness.

“Gathering outside and maintaining physical distancing reduces your risk of COVID-19 infection. Interacting with people indoors and without masking poses a greater risk of infection.

“If you are feeling sick, stay home, even if you have a negative COVID-19 test,” the physician advised.

“You should continue to isolate until your symptoms resolve, even if they are mild.”

Kancir also reminded Yukoners to be tolerant.

“Remember to respect other people’s choices on masking, distancing, or gathering, as we all have different risk tolerance levels.

“Some people may live with those at a higher risk of COVID-19, and they are making choices that not only protect themselves, but better protect their loved ones.”

The COVID numbers from Tuesday afternoon showed 86 active cases, with seven new cases overnight from Monday.

On Monday afternoon, the COVID dashboard indicated 90 active cases, with 38 new cases from the previous weekend.

Dallas said "visiting family in Red Deer hospital in a ward full of people that have had adverse results from the vaccination, paralysis and heart issues…. ". I call BS
You have no way of knowing what illness any of the patients on that ward had, except for the person you were visiting, if they even told you. But the reaction of a nurse I spoke to, who works on call at the RD hospital and covers many different areas, was "what a crock of ..."

@ Atom- when you Elon Musk up Twitter, Facebook and all media outlets on your own dime, then you can complain about where I get to express myself on the internet I pay for. Until then, mother hen, stick to the sword, cause' you suck with the pen.

@Atom

We live in the information era when anyone with an internet connection has access to the pertinent information. There are plenty of folks out there with relevant education who can offer an opinion that runs counter to the narrative. Science can't be debunked, it's simply a process of determining what we hold to be true. Up until just recently, good practice dictated that clinical trials be conducted before vaccines are administered to the public. Sadly, many doctors have been compromised and are forbidden from mentioning a link between people getting injured and the vaccines that are causing it, so unfortunately their opinions can't always be trusted. When it comes to making a decision about whether or not to get vaccinated, I've got links to all the information you could possibly need right here:

Well, since your government won't do it, let me be the first to commend you all on our collective efforts, we have had ONLY 4,000 cases, which is ONLY 10% of the population. Of these 4000, considerably less died. I am proud of all of you for your adversity, innovation and patience. Absent the daily media doom and gloom, I think you are all doing just great. Have a good summer.

It may be more concerning that so many 'Canadians' are protesting what were public health measures
Forums such as this give them a place to debunk science and good practices, which is a disservice to those in positions to protect the pubic. You know, folks with education relevant to health care and epidemiology....those stupid things.

Dear Atom - All citizens, Canadians included, have an obligation to protest “any” measure intended to control one’s ability to move about, any measure that threatens their right to bodily autonomy, or their ability to earn a living. It is prerequisite for any healthy, functional democracy.

It is an absolute moral and ethical failure to go along with some alleged authority for the sake of one’s credentialism. This failure to question is a fundamental rejection of science - You cannot have it both ways! This is the inherent contradiction of Liberalism…

You would trust a profession so complicated that the mere discussion of it or it’s ideas are the product of bias? You would trust a profession that is responsible for the 3rd leading cause of death in North America (medical error)?

Your supposition is tantamount to wilful ignorance and it appears to be supportive of the use of so-called expertise in controlling the m’asses. From Canada’s MK Ultra mind control experiments at McGill University to its forced sterilization campaign to its treatment of indigenous persons through the residential school system to Nazi Germany’s gas chambers - GTFOH!

Although Canada advanced a “final solution” before the Nazi’s did “they”share that much in common - FFS! I wonder if the Star News should require some minimum level of intelligence as part of its mediation process.

So, when Trudeau states that he admires basic dictatorships and then uses the medical profession to advance his fascistic objectives then one should “wake up” and say something, or GTFOH!

I’m speaking for only me….I’m fed up with the government telling me what’s best for me, visiting family in Red Deer hospital in a ward full of people that have had adverse results from the vaccination, paralysis and heart issues…. Trudeau and every Liberal/NDP politician can piss off, either way I’ll be better off.

"known" cases, I suspect many peeps in the private sector have symptoms but won't get tested as they will have to self isolate and miss their pay cheque therefore I would think that the 4000 are mostly govie types who can't wait to test positive and enjoy 10 days of pay.

Let’s change the Elections Act by adding a clause that states; Where a political candidate, elected or not, interferes with a public interest that does not accord with the will of the people then that representative may be subject to prosecution under both civil and criminal law.

The so-called “will of the people” shall not be assumed given the political pressure brought to bear through these public processes of a Liberalized agenda to divide, conquer, and incorporate.

Examples of such crimes could be something, um, ah… King Richard’s racialized, procurement policy. This is an offence against the commons by virtue of its preferential lens, one group gets an advantage over another - This is against the public interest where all are equal but for the application of the law.

Perhaps Trudeau was right… Canadians are racist, implicitly so, because the equilibrium is never one of equality but rather one of equity based on the number of boxes one can check… This is interesting because it is an absolute mirror of the political process wherein the path to the winner’s circle is cut by one’s ability to divide and conquer - To convince you that they are not the problem, rather, it is “them” who are the problem - It’s simply adult high-school and all of you are the bystanders cheering on the fight while telling everyone else you don’t like fighting - Pathetic!

As someone who had CV19 I still practice measures by wearing a mask. I have health issues but CV19 did not kill me. Mr B that is stupid comment on deaths door. I know a person who died from the CV19 and it was the virus that killed him.

NOT "undesirable", on the contrary, this high number of cases is a good indication that covid has a low fatality rate. Lower than the flu.

It also means that it's pointless to try to prevent the spread of such a highly transmissible respiratory virus. We should permanently lift all measures and restrictions now, which have caused more harm than good.

The poor kids forced to wear masks all day in school. Unvaxed Canadians still can't board a plane or train within Canada, although it's proven by now that the vaxed do spread the virus as well. Canada is the only country on the planet with these ridiculous ongoing measures, which violate our Charter Rights.

Oy, the statistics. It looks like Dr. Elliot may have set her ideal positivity rate a little high. Eventually, someone has to answer for the habit they got into of doling out these figures with little context.

"The Yukon has hit a rather undesirable milestone."

Why is this an undesirable milestone? EVERYONE will eventually be infected with SARS-COV-2. EVERYONE. Vaxxed or not.
This is now being widely acknowledged. Even Fauci is admitting this now.

Lean into it, folks.

So where are we at... 23 Yukoners have passed away with covid, of 4000+ infections? .575 percent chance of dying with it. How many were already on death's door?

How much damage did this government (and the incompetent CMOH's) do to Yukoners?

Oh the lawsuits are going to be legendary.

The positivity rate Elliot reports is meaningless … if you ONLY test those that you think are positive then your positivity by definition will be high. This is not rocket science. If they had a much more robust and expanded testing program like they should have had from the start that rate would probably be at 5% … it’s almost as if the Liberals and Elliot want to have a high positivity rate to justify restriction or a return to them.
