COVID-19 case counts continue their grim ascent

The COVID-19 case count in Yukon communities for this week is out – and shows some potentially shocking numbers for Whitehorse residents.

By Tim Giilck on January 6, 2022

Revised -The COVID-19 case count in Yukon communities for this week is out – and shows some potentially shocking numbers for Whitehorse residents.

Late this morning, public health officials reported 329 active cases, including 41 new ones.

That brought the number of Yukon residents who have had the virus to 2,125.

Officials reported 74 new cases Thursday. That brought the official case count to 328, up three from Wednesday.

The increases come on the heels of a COVID-19 briefing Wednesday where the acting chief medical officer of health, Dr. Catherine Elliott, announced reduced self-isolation orders in a bid to keep the territory’s testing regime from being overloaded.

Vaccinated people with either two or three doses are now expected to isolate themselves for seven days if they have any symptoms without requiring a positive test. That represents 80 per cent of the Yukon population.

Symptoms include a sore throat, sniffles or a runny nose, and fever.

If you have any such symptoms, Elliott said, you are presumed to have COVID-19.

Partially-vaccinated (one dose) or unvaccinated people are to make the same assumption, and isolate for 10 days.

That’s a change from the standard 14 days of isolation Yukoners are used to.

Unvaccinated people now represent 10 per cent of the population, according to the government figures.

No community case counts were included in the latest report, as that breakdown comes only on Wednesdays.

There were 325 active cases in the territory, the Yukon government’s website reported Wednesday.

Whitehorse had 263 of those cases. Both were record numbers.

Dawson City was officially listed as having 20 cases, though Mayor Bill Kendrick has said many residents believe the true number is substantially higher.

Tagish had six, Carcross has five, with smaller numbers in the rural communities.

Pelly Crossing had three, Watson Lake had two, with one case each in Haines Junction, Old Crow and Teslin.

According to Elliott, though, no one should be reading too much into those numbers.

At Wednesday’s briefing, she said she hoped Yukoners understood the numbers paint only an approximate picture of what’s happening in the territory.

“It’s not an exact count,” she acknowledged.

That was her explanation for an ongoing discrepancy in cases between what government sources are recording and what local officials like Kendrick are saying.

Elliott said she wants people to understand the government numbers come from tests that are performed and then logged into the official database.

While she said that’s a rapid process, there can be a lag between those tests and their formal publication.

At best, the government numbers represent a snapshot of the true picture.

She also mentioned the test positivity rate is currently 32 per cent – indicating there is a high number of cases in the Yukon that are going unrecorded.

She couldn’t, however extrapolate, even roughly, how many more cases there might be.

Elliott also didn’t break down the number of Omicron variant cases in the Yukon, despite a promise before Christmas to do so.

She said only there is widespread community spread of the variant, and it remains to be seen whether it would plateau quickly, as it appears to be doing elsewhere.

“Now is the time to prevent this,” Elliott said. “It’s like a blizzard has blown in. It’s challenging.”

The key tool in reducing further spread during this outbreak is isolation, Elliott said.

That’s why she’s mandating an initial seven-day isolation for fully-vaccinated people who are symptomatic with no testing required.

If you have symptoms such as a sore throat, sniffles, a cough or a fever, and don’t have chronic medical conditions, simply stay at home for a week until you are symptom-free, she advised.

“I am asking a lot of people right now,” Elliott said. “You should stay home (if you have those symptoms).”

Territorial public health officials are still looking at whether to use rapid testing on a more widespread basis.

With the federal government announcing it’s providing hundreds of thousands more such tests to the provinces and territories, the Yukon is expecting to receive 100,000 test kits, according to Premier Sandy Silver, who noted Omicron is spreading “like wildfire” in the territory.

The COVID testing site at the Centennial Motors carwash off the Alaska Highway in Hillcrest has been very busy in recent days, with some people waiting in line for several hours.

“COVID numbers continue their grim ascent”…..as does fear and all the other negative side effects of the pandemic with a headline like that. How about “COVID numbers continue their ascent” - tells the same story and provides the same information, but doesn’t drive the fear which has become the most divisive thing in the pandemic.

Cool YouTube clip. That’s a neat anecdote. You know what an anecdote is right?
That’s one doctor. An anesthetist (not an epidemiologist). Who himself has had covid. And is therefore asking if he, having already had covid and now having antibodies, if he needs to be vaccinated.

He’s asking for nuance regarding covid and vaccines.
He is not anti-vaccine.

Your post makes it seem like this one person who works in an operating room on the UK has exploded our brains and our held ideas with his revelation - that is laughable exaggeration and a misleading interpretation of what went on in that video.
It really seems like you thought this was gonna hit hard - but on close inspection it falls flat.

Take care as your failure sinks in. Depression can be a real thing this time of year.

@TheHammer come on now, you look foolish when you can't even address my name properly.. but anyway, it's the citizens who are under attack from the gov. The word vaccine by definition does not include mRNA "vaccine". Look it up. Another problem is simple, gov is believing big pharma. Give me any random years and I can pull up stories of Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnston being sued for misleading their products. I'm simply here trying to wake a few people up with the TRUTH! Truth I can easily prove... unlike the long term and short term side effects of mRNA.. I'm not affiliated with any part as there is no difference except the colours they use. I ripped on conservative gov under Harper too. Closed door meetings, redacted documents, and no open public discussions really screams a transparent democracy doesn't it.. here's one simply enough for you, Democracy=the right to choose, Dictatorship = chooses your rights..

"Do you internet doctors know how many doses of the polio vaccine you got as a kid?" -Roy

This is essential viewing. The man conducting the survey is the UK health secretary. The man speaking to him is a consultant anaesthesiologist. A camera crew were there. It is over. Millions have seen it. The cat is out of the bag. Repeat. The cat is out of the bag.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOlEYcd1nyI

Your brain just imploded. The UK health secretary is the one in the wrong. The nice doctor is a qualified practicing consultant doctor in a major UK hospital. Guess which one is not vaccinated? O no. Your appeal to authority is actually the authority of brainless politicians and the media. Not medicine, not science, not the best doctors who are being routinely censored. It is over.

The main objective is not about COVID or anything else, it's about attacking the government. It is the agenda of the extreme right to bring down the government and instigate a violent revolution, you are the fear monger. What about those accusations that those who refuse the covax are 'conservative' Trump supporters? Fact is, Trump himself brought this vaccine, at 'warp speed'. Trump likes to boast of that, and is miffed that the covax wasn't officially named the 'Trump vaccine'. (I get why big pharma didn't name the covax after Trump, it would have completely turned off the sheep who've been controlled to think that Trump was the ultimate evil.)

Now, Trump is pushing hard to promote the covax among US populations:
https://globalnews.ca/news/8481584/trump-pro-covid-vaccine-anger/

So, those pushing the covax are supporting Trump's ideology. Think about that... Both political sides are controlled by the same billionaires who got even more wealthy with this scamdemic.

Matthew - I wouldn't say I feel lied to. I do wish public health prioritized nuance and the delivery of hard truths over clarity and communication goals.

I'm disappointed that between waning immunity to infection and the evolution of the virus means that in its current form we won't be able to use it to control transmission. It did a decent job of preventing transmission with previous (and more severe) variants so it saved a number of lives over the last year.

Things have obviously changed with omicron, as some (but not enough) people in infectious disease and public health worried it might. Thankfully it is a good news/bad news story. The dream of containing infection by vaccine is gone for now, but all indications are that omicron leads to mild illness for more people (although it still causes severe outcomes in some people). All the evidence still seems to be that the vaccine reduces the likelihood of severe disease and for that reason I regret nothing.

How many boosters will I take? We'll have to see. I haven't seen good quality evidence using proper methodology that serious side effects from the vaccine are terribly common. The second dose and booster hit me fairly hard so that is something I'd consider and I'll have to see how things go. I probably wouldn't consider a booster for the mere purpose of (what appears to be) short lived prevention against infection. I would consider a booster if there was 1) evidence of waning immunity against severe disease, 2) an update to the vaccine formula that provided improved prevention against infection or 3) evidence that a breakthrough omicron (or subsequent variant) infection would be worse than what I experienced with my last booster along with evidence that another booster might provide some benefit.

A 1% risk of death (and proportionally higher risk of hospitalization and severe illness) is nothing to spend your life cowering in fear over (and I don't) but nor is it something to scoff at and a decline safe and effective vaccine.

Covid has ensured a lasting, deep distrust of anything government. That's a good thing. We shouldn't be trusting government anyway. "They" are not our friends. That distrust has spilled over to media, especially CBC who only seems to print what is approved by the PMO. Wouldn't trust them if they said it was cold outside. Distrust has spilled over into the medical profession. Our doctors simply can not go against the CDC advisories. So, that leaves what? That leaves everyone reading, researching, comparing.. and deciding for themselves which side of the fence they are going to stand in. First step to getting your life back, take a stand. Knowledge is power. The government doesn't like that.

@matthew I don't feel lied to about the vaccine. I am more ambivalent about the booster and the vaccine mandate has made that problematic for me. If the mandate starts to include boosters I would be definitely conflicted. One booster, okay. But the anger grows at the thought that it too would be mandated.

Four and beyond, not at all. Scientists are not in agreement. It seems inevitable that at some point I will become an undesirable on the current trajectory. On the other hand, politicians might finally face that the recommendations are getting out of hand.

Hegelian Dialectic: Create or use a problem to invite a reaction from the public. If there is enough fear and hysteria, people will not only accept the solution that limits their rights, they will beg for it.
Covid is real but the narrative being constructed around it is false. I believe our politicians think they are doing what's right, unfortunately they are just as in the dark as the rest of us. They blindly follow directives from above, mere puppets. It would be nice to see someone stand up and say this is wrong regardless of orders that come from your superiors.
Compliance is prolonging this nightmare. If we the people do not wake up and unite, stop allowing ourselves to be divided by those whose interests are served by the current narrative it will be too late.
Historically the most terrible eras in human society that include War, Genocide, slavery, and yes Medical Apartheid were born of blind/willing compliance of authority. There is still time to ask questions. Stop this fear mongering and segregation of our society, love your neighbors and use your God given ability to think for yourself.
There are real solutions out there of we come together.

'Grim ascent'? Please, WS, what is the purpose of this headline writing?
The active count rose by 3. Today it rose by 1. Evidently folks are recovering as fast as they are getting Omicron.

Sure, get vaccinated, manage our risks and our health prudently, but the pandemic of fear supported by this kind of journalism is not warranted and is causing a lot of mental health damage to those fragile people susceptible to it.

So the vaccinated are no safer than the unvaccinated, which by the way was a fact from the beginning. A virus killing less than 1% of the infected, but the vaccine guaranteed 95, 90 and 88% - not sure how the liberals sold this crap to the sheep believing in herd protection and blah blah blah. The vaccinated created the variants and the vaccinated are responsible for the transmission and creation of the variants but everyone wanted everyone to get vaccinated. This liberal government has sold ice cubes to eskimos on this vaccine. If you don't trust in your own personal immunity than you better adjust your way of thinking. This government has an agenda and it's to destroy what was a socialist society and dictate, track and spy on every person in the country. How's that vaccine working for everyone - feeling any safer?

As a plumber vaccinated for Hep A & B, I won’t catch that. Even Polio and small pox, vaccinated for that, won’t catch it. Heck trip to South Africa, Malaria and Yellow fever- vaccinated and didn’t catch it.
So, stop calling a flu shot a vaccine.

Here's my report, based on my old-timer experience.

This is just like another flu & cold season. Remember, like we've routinely had every winter. Stop the testing and mandates, and all will go back to normal. Old and frail people with co-morbidities will continue to get very sick and/or die from some respiratory disease or other, just as happened for hundreds of years. It's normal and part of life. The great majority of people only get mild colds or flu, and recover with natural and powerful new immunity.

Most people can avert serious disease and boost their immune system by eating nutritious food rich in Vitamin D and C (or supplements), quit smoking, get plenty of good sleep every night, daily walk in the fresh air & sunshine, and positive attitude. It really works.

Do you internet doctors know how many doses of the polio vaccine you got as a kid?
Do you know that off the top of your head? I bet you don't.
Do you think it was 1?
2?
maybe 3 jabs?

What about your kids - how many did they get?
What? You don't know?! How could you not know that?
I thought you were all vaccine experts. This is disappointing. You certainly post like you are experts in vaccines.

Kids get 5 polio vaccines. Yep - 5 needles. 5 jabs in the arm.
5. All spaced out over time.
Same with Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis.
Actually with those ones kids get 6 jabs. You did and your kids did.

You must be falling off your chair at this point considering how much hair you are pulling out over 3 covid jabs. You gave your kids 40 vaccines yet you can't stop feeling self righteous about 3 covid shots. That's hypocrisy right there.

We haven't even talked about mumps or measles or Hepatitis B.
And guess what - think about this before you type out the reply you are already formulating in your head: not a single one of these vaccines forms a force field around your kid's body to prevent a virus from getting inside their nose or lungs. That's not how vaccines work.

They work by preparing your immune system so it's ready. And with 95% of Canadians having immune systems that are ready they will definitely make up the majority of omicron cases...because.....wait for it.....they are the majority of Canadians (you're not).
The majority of ICU patients right now are still unvaccinated.

And you can pretend that the hidden stats of the Yukon support your 5% minority opinions - but all you have to do is look at BC, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec - the people being admitted to the ICU and dying or getting long covid are unvaccinated.
But you're not going to do that - because your ego would take a hit and you'd have to admit you're wrong.

Also WGH doesn't get overrun with flu or cold patient admissions ever. What a joke of a statement. Who ever heard of a special cold and flu testing center out by the highway getting overrun with testing requests.

You guys live in a fantasy world.

The Yukon Party supporters on here don't have a very high Covid I.Q. as they don't seem to get it between vaxed or unvaxed. Maybe they don't want the truth.

Well, if the Village Elliott is going to keep recycling her comments, I will do the same in reply to her lack of providing useful information to the people who pay her salary.

Deja Moo - It's a New Year and all we're getting from these overpaid government puppets is the same old recycled LIBgov talking-point BS propaganda. In a sane world one could expect these overpaid bureaucrats to be justifying their exorbitant salaries with useful information, like how many Covid hospitalizations, and the VAX-status of those and any deceased supposedly from C0vid. But no, they continue to treat us like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed nothing but BS like before. One thing we can be certain of, the seriously afflicted victims are fully-vaxed, because if they were unvaxed we would be reminded of that in almost every comment they make.

Meanwhile have you noticed how infrastructure maintenance and government services are falling apart? We've had big snowfalls and -30 temperatures before and things kept running like normal. However now, streets are not getting plowed, meters are not being read, offices are still closed and people are inexplicably absent from their positions.

It should be obvious by now that the governments' uselessly insane VAX-mandate policy has compromised the workforce far more than is being reported. All it created is a situation where those who have morals, integrity, backbone, critical thinking abilities and skepticism have been taken out of the system leaving only those who are blindly compliant and easily controlled to somehow do the best they can.

Welcome to the "New Normal" of self inflicted government incompetence and if you don't like it thank those who voted LIB/NDP because this is what they wanted.

And the fear porn continues. This fixation on "case counts" serves only one purpose: to frighten people into compliance.
A better indicator are ICU and hospitalization rates. However, it should be noted that the powers-that-be have a history of manipulating definitions/protocols to match their narrative, particularly how "un-vaxxed" and "covid" are determined.

Also note this is the typical peak flu/cold season with many Canadian hospitals historically overwhelmed during this period - which I expect is also true of WGH.
