COVID-19 boosters available for young people

Fully-vaccinated Yukoners aged 12 to 17 could begin receiving a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine today, provided they are six months past their second dose.

By Whitehorse Star on February 7, 2022

Fully-vaccinated Yukoners aged 12 to 17 could begin receiving a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine today, provided they are six months past their second dose.

Rural clinics opened in Carcross. Haines Junction, Old Crow, Mayo, Dawson City and Watson Lake will also have clinics within the next week.

More clinic dates and communities are being scheduled and will be added to Yukon.ca in the coming days, the territorial government said Friday.

There will be more opportunities for this age group to access vaccines. The government will schedule enough appointments to provide a booster to all Yukoners aged 12 to 17 who wish to have one by the end of February.

Immunocompromised children aged five to 11 who have already received their primary series will be able to receive a third dose.

This third dose will ensure an appropriate immune response for children whose immune system is compromised.

The third dose for immunocompromised children is recommended four weeks after receiving a second dose.

A third shot differs from a booster dose. The third dose is the completion of a primary series for people who meet specific criteria, such as immunocompromised individuals.

On Friday afternoon, the government reported 143 active cases and 18 new cases from last Thursday.

The seven-day average number of cases as of that day was 196.1.

New cases are averaging 20.6 cases a day, while hospitalizations are running at 0.43 cases a day.

The postivity rate for test remains high at 30.6 per cent. That indicates far more cases are circulating in the public than are being identified.

As of last Wednesday, the community case counts showed Whitehorse with 90 cases, Watson Lake with six, Carcross with four, Dawson, Mayo and Haines Junction had three apiece, Pelly Crossing had two. Destruction Bay, Teslin and Faro each had single cases.

Data from the past weekend were unavailable before press time this afternoon.

The government continues to adjust its vaccination strategy based on the latest recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and advice from Dr. Catherine Elliott, the acting chief medical officer of health.

Appointments can be made online at https://yukon.ca/this-is-our-shot. Whitehorse residents can also call 1-877-374-0425.

Residents in the communities can call their local health centre to book an appointment and can find clinic dates and times on Yukon.ca.

“Yukoners should get vaccinated and get their booster shot to help protect their health and safety and stop the spread of COVID-19 in our territory,” said Health and Social Services Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee.

“Thank you to all the Yukoners who have gone to get their shots to protect their loved ones and our communities.”

Young children who are immunocompromised are less likely to have a robust response to the COVID-19 vaccine and require a third dose to ensure they are fully protected, the goverment said.

Second doses for children aged five to 11 are currently being delivered across the Yukon.

First and second doses for children will continue to be a priority at clinics.

People should wait at least 24 hours after their vaccination before requesting a proof of vaccination credential.

To ensure their vaccination credential reflects their entire vaccine history, people need to request a new credential after each dose of a vaccine.

McPhee and Elliott issued a statement on COVID-19 and health care workers on Friday afternoon.

“We offer our continued gratitude and appreciation to Yukon healthcare professionals and essential frontline workers,” they said.

“Working under incredibly demanding circumstances for the past two years, these everyday heroes have ensured we all continue to have reliable access to services and supplies, and support for our loved ones.”

“In particular,” the minister and physician said, “we want to highlight the skilled and compassionate individuals in our long-term care homes, our community health nurses, those working in our hospitals and the dedicated nurses at Yukon Communicable Disease Control, who have been working around the clock since this pandemic began.

“These people continue to go above and beyond to make sure Yukoners get the care and support they need.”

In this critical moment, as the Omicron wave begins to crest, they added, “the front line needs our help to ease the pressures on our health care system and keep community spread to a minimum.

“We ask all Yukoners to do their part for this vital workforce by getting vaccinated and boosted, keeping your social circles small, and practising the Safe 6 plus 1.”

As Yukoners look toward brighter days ahead, McPhee and Elliott , “let’s all continue to check in on friends and family, support our communities, and take care of one another.

“No one is immune from the impacts of COVID-19 and they continue to affect all of us in a myriad of ways. If you are struggling, please know that help is available. There is an expanding network of health and mental health resources available at Yukon.ca.

“Our actions today will define our coming months. With continued vigilance and care, we can emerge from this phase of the pandemic sooner and stronger.”

Just keep selling that vaccine. You know the one that doesn't work. But hey you can have a third one and you're still going to catch covid and your chance of being hospitalized or dying is, wait for it, exactly what it'd be without any vaccine. The lockdowns have saved nobody and has destroyed our economy, our country and our children. But all you liberal loving folks who believe the science that has never been presented but the word sure gets used a lot and most of you failed science but wearing a mask is cool and at least these people know whose boss.
Here's a eye opener for you. This government and every official works for you so why are you allowing your employees to tell you how to live? Not the sharpest pencils in the box. And any person who would listen to Tracey Mcfee well I can't imagine anyone but enablers paying attention to this beauty.

Hmmm… so an embattled minister is taking on the pandemic file. Interesting. Looks like a set up. I wonder if the liberals are going to angle for McPhee to take both the school abuse scandal and the general malaise around the virus onto her shoulders. To then be rewarded with a cushy appointment after the all-but-inevitable defeat or resignation. The rest of the play would be to let the inquiries finish up, admit wrongdoing and put McPhee out with a false promise of change. A great political chess move.

It only deepens the obvious intention to distract from some of the lessons learned over the last two years. The civil service is rife with failures that need to be addressed. Budgets are so bloated, the average citizen can’t be blamed for smelling the manure. Government and school board staff obviously felt unable to speak out even with children at risk. That’s reflective of the culture of YG and it’s a problem.

Reviews of the use of emergency measures, audits of all the money dished out… we should be learning from our mistakes at least. Now is the time to start. Let’s not abandon the reasonable steps of good governance just because the opposition is full of feckless rubes.

We have been living in a nation void of logic, rationality, ethics, human rights, compassion, and empathy for more than 2 years. The tragic part is that some Canadians still don't realize this: empty virtue signaling bestowed upon them by the government has replaced their humanity.
When the mandates are lifted, I would like to remind these people, you can still stay home, no one will rip the mask off your face, no one will force you to dine in at a restaurant. You can drop your kids off at a leisure activity and wait in your car. You can still say no to family gatherings and events. You can live within your 4 walls and no one will stop you. You will not be judged for your choice-we will just be glad that u had one. That is the point of freedom of choice. While you are comfortable where you are, we are also comfortable moving on with our lives.

Students all over Canada and the world are organizing walk outs and going to school maskless.
This is a call to all the kids in whitehorse, stand up for your rights! Look at the Science, masks mitigate very little and are more detrimental than beneficial. Talk with your friends, question the authority figures forcing this non-scientific mandate on you, if u all come together, u can teach these adults some common sense and humanity!

"The Science" being trotted out again.

Yet, the evidence is resounding that these "vaccines" provide very marginal benefits to young people while simultaneously exposing them to increased risks (such as myocarditis). In fact, long term risks are unknown as these vaccines were never tested for this.

But, our political masters and their ideologically bent advisors are determined to make everyone of us get the jab no matter what. No consideration of individual benefit/risk . . . . trust us, get the jab. If you don't trust "the Science", we will coerce you and your kids to get the jab.

"McPhee and Elliott issued a statement on COVID-19 and health care workers on Friday afternoon."
Too long to quote the whole spiel, but basically "Do if for the health care workers, they are are heroes". Never mind that we fired a bunch of these heroes. This is analogous to when public opinion of a war turns sour so the propaganda turns to "support the troops", because there is nothing else worth supporting.

"Yukoners should get vaccinated and get their booster shot to help protect their health and safety and stop the spread of COVID-19 in our territory".
Did the science tell you this? Last I checked the shot did nothing to stop infection or transmission.

"To ensure their vaccination credential reflects their entire vaccine history, people need to request a new credential after each dose of a vaccine".
Credentials? OK then. Keep your "credentials" up to date so you can access your entitlements. Are we now referring to a "social credit score" as "credentials"?

Yeah, I won’t be taking any advice from this person. Especially health advice from someone who obviously does not exercise or live a healthy lifestyle.

My son had a confirmed case of covid back in July. His preschool just had a sizeable outbreak (majority of the school and the parents), he did not get it again. Why are we not acknowledging naturally acquired immunity yet? The preschool could potentially unmask their teachers (VERY IMPORTANT for language/psychological development).

This is disturbing.
We have become too dependent on the system.
We depend on big pharma to keep us "healthy".
We depend on government to make us feel "safe".
We depend on politicians to be our "saviors".
We depend on useless media and entertainment rather than critical thinking.
Try breaking the dependency you will feel much better.

Why is Tracy Mcphee still speaking for government, she shouldn't be there anymore. She has lost all support and confidence.

What this article doesn't inform is that children and teens are at higher risk of the vaccine side effects including:
Myocarditis - inflamation of the heart and
Pericarditis - inflamation of the lining outside the heart.
Also, the present vaccines are not effective against the omicron variant of covid which is 98% of all new infections.
