COVID-19 booster shots set for those 50-plus

Less than two weeks after being asked about the need for booster shots, the Yukon government will provide the vaccine doses to people 50 and older beginning Monday.

By Tim Giilck on October 29, 2021

Less than two weeks after being asked about the need for booster shots, the Yukon government will provide the vaccine doses to people 50 and older beginning Monday.

“Following recommendations from the acting Yukon’s chief medical officer of health, COVID-19 boosters will be available to Yukoners aged 50 and older starting Monday, Health and Social Services Minister Tracy-Ann McPhee announced Thursday afternoon in the legislature.

“A booster dose strengthens the immune system response when protection from a primary vaccine series shows signs of waning over time. Booster shots help those who may have a dip in their immune response to once again reach the highest protection from COVID-19.

“People are eligible for a booster when it has been at least six months since they completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series.”

On Oct. 15, during the most recent COVID-19 briefing, Dr. Catherine Elliott said she was waiting on enough evidence to show the boosters were a good idea.

“Slowly, over time, our immune system starts to forget. And there has been evidence of waning immunity, or decreasing response, and it occurs quite a long ways out. Evidence is being built right now.

“What’s been shown with waning immunity internationally and in the studies that have been released is while the immunity wanes for infection, yet for severe outcomes it wanes much more slowly,” Elliott said that day.

“If we require a booster shot to keep community levels up, and that maybe the case, we are waiting for the guidance of the national advisory committee and I will make recommendations for Yukon accordingly.”

A news release which accompanied Thursday’s announcement said, “While priority is being made to Yukoners ages 50 and older, booster clinics may be expanded at a further date to include younger ages, once recommended by the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.”

Clinics will begin next week in Carcross, Watson Lake and Whitehorse.

Within the next six weeks, all other communities will have booster shot clinics.

Yukoners can also receive their first or second doses at these clinics. In Whitehorse, COVID-19 boosters will be offered at the Coast High Country Inn Convention Centre, and appointments can be made online.

“It is important that we take all the necessary steps needed to stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect Yukoners across the territory,” said McPhee.

“COVID-19 boosters will help protect Yukoners who are at a higher risk of severe infection from COVID-19 and reduce the spread of the virus in our communities.

“Clinics will be held in each community, and there will be enough vaccine for everyone who meets the criteria to receive a COVID-19 booster,” added the minister.

“The most effective way to reduce the harms of the COVID-19 pandemic is to have the best vaccine protection possible,” Elliott added Thursday.

“This booster helps those who may have a dip in their immune response over time to once again reach the highest protection from COVID-19.

“This booster recommendation is the next step in our vaccine guidance that now includes the primary series of two doses for all who are eligible, three doses for those who are immunocompromised, and boosters for those in long-term care,” Elliott added.

“If you are 50 or older, and it’s been six months since your second dose, do the right thing and get your booster shot.”

The Yukon Party and the NDP endorsed the announcement.

“We support making booster shots available to Yukoners aged 50 and up,” said Yukon Party health critic Brad Cathers.

“As members will recall, I wrote a letter to the government urging them to make booster shots available for senior citizens, and I have urged them to do that through motions in this assembly.

“A few provinces began making COVID-19 booster shots available to seniors earlier this fall, and the N.W.T. is offering boosters to anyone 75 and over,” Cathers noted.

“B.C. (on Wednesday) announced that everyone 12 and up will be able to receive a booster shot as of January 1. We urge the Yukon government to follow B.C.’s lead in this area.

“We would also urge government to make shots available to children five to 11 as soon as that is approved for use in Canada.”

Annie Blake of the NDP concurred.

“It is good to hear that COVID booster shots will now be made available to those 50 and over, starting next week,” she said.

“We seem to be well ahead of the curve, since only B.C. has announced making available boosters to the public starting in 2022.

“Yukon seniors in the extended care facilities have received their boosters, and we are thankful for that,” Blake added.

“We know that individuals who are more vulnerable, due to illness or organ transplants, have received their third vaccine.”

Despite this good news, Blake said, “I do have some questions and concerns that I am hoping the minister can address in her reply.

“Yukoners 50 and over will be grateful for the opportunity to begin to get their boosters. Do we know when the younger Yukoners will be able to get theirs too?”

See letter.

Hey DWD...True that!
Two of the largest contributors to this fear pandemic, the mainstream media industrial complex and the public school system.
Fear and division sell better than sex in a sexless society absolutely obsessed with gender and neon hair pachyderms screaming for tolerance.
Fear porn the greatest tool in every tyrants toolbox since the invention of fire, most probably done by a man proper just to smack the SJW hornets nest.

5,000,000 CLAIMED deaths from covid. This includes getting hit by a truck and the death being labeled a covid death. The narrative keeps changing and the covid death numbers are all fudged.
Death is yet a grim reality. 0% survival rate to the natural man.
Nearing 11,000,000 deaths for all communicable diseases this year...
2,000,000+ from alcohol this year. Nearing 4,200,000 million this year from smoking alone.
Nearing 36,000,000 abortions this year.
No global panic over these other causes of death. No huge push for mandates, etc. for other causes of death.
Nearing 50,000,000 deaths this year in total in the world. Around 150,000 deaths a day.
All the fear and fighting and such over the so-called virus and one could get hit by that truck in the meantime.
Sad so many have bought into the media narrative.

Imagine looking at a death toll of 5 million and saying, "No big deal!"

This pandemic has really brought out the ghoulish and the ghastly in droves.

I was happy to get vaccinated, but I'm not seeing enough solid advice that boosters are necessary (especially after 6 months!) to get excited about getting one. There is a lot of conflicting information.

I never thought a year ago that we would now be receiving so many mixed messages about whether the vaccinations are working or not. And I sure never thought boosters would be recommended at such a short interval. My main concern is if they start including it as a requirement for the passport, those darn boosters could be a ball and chain.

No, Matthew, this is not the only vaccine where you need a booster shot. For example, Tetanus shots occur on a regular basis.

No one wants to get sick. I am over 80. Covid will kill me. Flu will kill me. Some days the wind could blow me into traffic and kill me. My Mother died of the 'swine flu' that hit hard in the US in the 80s. I had chicken pox, measles, mumps, sore throats. My immune system was always working, and later on I got a cold for 2 days, my younger coworkers were sick for 10 days. I think there is a lot to be said for strengthening a person's natural immunities.
When I see the variances in covid, it almost looks like Mother Nature is taking out the infirm. It's not like polio which took out babies, toddlers and children. Do I want to be one of those infirm? uh uh.. I don't think so! My opinion now is do what people want to do who are at risk, protect them as best we can, and as best as they want to be protected. But, let the strong, young and healthy pick up a natural immunity to it.
There are a lot of people from all over the world bringing their diseases to Canada, and they are picking up ours. We need to focus on strong and healthy. I understand how hard it will be for a parent to watch a sick child, the governments have spent billions of dollars scaring the pants off us.

BTW, I also have friends who have had covid, I was really sick for 3 or 4 days, weak as a kitten for another 10. The other one was.. you're kidding? I have covid?
So, really, it comes down to making personal choices for yourself and your family and not having to take any $$*t from anyone for your decision.

I’m not drinking the koolaid. When this government in the territory and the feds say something is good for you it probably isn’t. The liberals have lied and cheated over and over again…then again so has the NDP and the conservatives and when tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.

Matthew, you continue to do the math incorrectly on Nov 1, 2021 at 3:43 pm

It's the percentage of deaths based on number of cases, not the entire population.
In the Yukon, that's 1.09% (10 deaths, 921 cases). Across the country, it's 1.7% (1,715,891 cases, 28,980 deaths). The idea is still to avoid getting infected, or if infected, to avoid getting severely ill.

Natural immunity rules over the vaccine theory any day. Yes, 5,000,000 deaths claimed to be covid related. But...224,000,000 RECOVERED. 2% death rate and a 98% survival rate world wide. Even better in the Yukon. The fact is all of the mandates, masks, vaccines, etc. only serve to weaken the immune system and destroy it. Where on earth did plain ole common sense go folks?

@fully vaccinated, getting a booster etc.

Sure, I will describe my experience with having covid. I caught covid back in April of this year from a roommate that had travelled to Vancouver and brought it back to the house. I had a mild fever, runny nose, and a bit of a cough. After about 4-5 days I felt perfectly fine. I haven't had any noticeable long term issues. I'm 34 years old, don't drink or smoke, I like to eat healthy and I lift weights.
I had pneumonia as a child and that was far worse. Covid just felt like a very minor flu. I am unvaccinated, or 'pureblooded' as we like to call it.

If all Catherine Elliot is waiting for national advisory announcements based on studies and analysis that other people do, why are we paying her over $700,000 a year? What are her credentials that justify this? What stratospheric work is she doing that nobody else could do that justifies this? She is getting paid more than Theresa Tam and Bonnie Henry put together!

Rick S. brings up the study that should have alarm bells ringing. Vaccination levels were found to be positively correlated to infection levels. On an individual level vaccines seem to offer some protection for 4-6 months. On a societal level though they seem to be negative. Also, all cause mortality is rising in some highly vaxxed countries when it should be improving. Why?

The biggest issue at this point is that so many people have gone along with the narrative for so long, that now they have to defend it at all costs, no matter how absurd it becomes. To deconstruct the lie would collapse their whole world, so they have to keep it going.

So, using a brand new vaccine, and you need booster shots... hmm seems like the vaccine has failed as this is the ONLY vaccine where you need a booster shot.. all this because 0.07% of Canadians have died.. talk about living in a different reality..

Might be nice if web site worked. Same problem as with original shots; first it said no appointments available, then it gives you a time, next after your have input your particulars to confirm it says the appointment is no longer available & there are no others. The traffic overload excuse only goes so far.

From the article:
"University of Toronto immunologist Jennifer Gommerman. "And the reason I don't like the term is that it implies that the immune response in its entirety is declining."

It's "entirely normal" for antibody levels to drop initially after vaccination and your immune response to the virus to become "contracted" over time, she said. But your body is also creating "highly efficient" memory B cells to fight off COVID-19 long term."
Think long and hard about what Dr. Elliott wants you to do....

A few weeks ago the European Journal of Epidemiology published an article showing vaccination rates are not linked to lower Covid rates. In fact, if anything, the research shows there's increased rates of Covid with higher vaccination rates.

Today, the Lancet published a study showing that vaccinated people are just as likely to spread Covid as unvaccinated people.
