Councillors speak out against racism

City councillors Jocelyn Curteanu and Steve Roddick spoke at Monday night’s meeting about racism in light of the turmoil going on in U.S. cities following the death of George Floyd.

By Whitehorse Star on June 4, 2020

City councillors Jocelyn Curteanu and Steve Roddick spoke at Monday night’s meeting about racism in light of the turmoil going on in U.S. cities following the death of George Floyd.

They both said racism is an issue that exists in our communities in general, and must not be tolerated.

“As Canadians who pride themselves on the multiculturalism that has built our country, it is difficult to understand how there can be so much hate, and that there are still broad systemic issues related to race that remain unaddressed,” Curteanu said in her impassioned statement.

“I’m sure we can all agree that racism is everywhere but there is also a general consensus that racism is unjust, inexcusable and harmful not just to the individual, but to society as a whole – and therefore cannot be tolerated.”

Roddick said racism is present in the U.S., in Canada, in the Yukon and in Whitehorse.

As a white settler who benefited from colonialism, Roddick said, he recognizes he will never fully understand the anger and pain people of colour and Indigenous roots feel when they see people die because of the colour of their skin.

The councillor said he also recognizes it’s his duty to keep listening and learning from those communities to achieve a greater understanding.

It is important, he insisted, to keep working against racism.

Curteanu noted that Whitehorse is a member of the international Coalition of Inclusive Communities.

As an elected community leader, the councillor said, she felt compelled to express her sadness about the escalating violence in the U.S.

“It has been so disheartening and frightening to witness, and I’d like to extend my sympathy to all those affected. Martin Luther King said: ‘A riot is the language of the unheard.’ So true! Unfortunately, it is just as true that ‘violence begets violence.’

“… For the sake of the American people and as a role model for the international community, I hope and pray that the U.S. returns to the peaceful, just and generous nation that it has been known to be, with the quiet strength that demanded the world’s respect and admiration,” Curteanu said.

Real, if in fact you feel like that when you are hunting, then you are a lucky man, you get to see how many people feel, but they feel like that every day, every where they go and everything they do. Perhaps with that new found perspective you will help to make the world a better place.

The world she is changing and it is coming fast. The racist rednecks have always been in the minority, but now we will start to see people from all races calling them out. The world is getting to small for racist bigots.

ALL lives matter EQUALLY in the eyes of the Creator. No one is special because of the color of their skin.
Anyone who believes this isn't true, is by definition a racist.
Anyone who believes that some races deserve special treatment for any reason; is by definition a racist.
No race can be 'more equal' than another. Equality is absolute, you're either equal or you're not equal.
People who cannot reconcile this basic understanding are suffering from an affliction clinically known as Cognitive Dissonance.
If you are one of them; seek professional help.

Once again, Roddick is a virtue signaling grandstander, riding a current politcal issue to further his career. People aren’t stupid.

The ever virtuous Roddick went a bit off script by not 'correctly' identifying as a cis-gendered, white-privileged settler....the true horror of it all! Let us all retreat to our safe spaces and give ourselves hugs until the end of the world arrives. It really shouldn't be long.

@Johnson I agree completely, these discussion boards are very telling and scary on just how this issue needs to be voiced even more so. White people haven't suffered centuries of oppression. I want everyone to listen to Breonna Taylor's boyfriends 911 call.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iuNzTomfy0

I went to high school with Angel Carlick and remember when she went missing. I thought no f-ing way she's ok, she's gotta be ok, she's doing so well. The police reacted in an typical indigenous women's missing response. Oh she's out partying, oh she'll turn up. She never picked up her paycheck or checked up on her beloved brother which was out of character.

If it was your loved one's constantly being murdered or ignored at the hand's of the police, you'd be right in there. You give some people an ounce of authority and they abuse that power profusely. If these officers confidently murdered George Floyd in front of a camera, you have to wonder how much they got away with without.

I remember being a little girl and wishing I was white... it is horrifying I wished to be different. Now I am a proud indigenous woman. I have my strong, resilient, incredibly kind indigenous ancestors in me, I wouldn't have it any other way. Just recently my beautiful niece told me she wished she was white. It breaks my heart. What is it in this sick, sad world that white people are something we strive to be. I will work with her to embrace her heritage but something is still seriously very wrong.

I just turned 30 and am the first generation in my family to not attend residential school. Why do people act as if it was so long ago. I watched my entire family suffer due to the unbearable abuse and it effected me greatly. But I'm trying to break the cycle. There are still US citizens alive that lived during segregation. Do you think white people's thoughts changed just because the laws have? We're still disposable and I don't even feel welcome on my ancestral homeland.

One more very important point - If Raymond Silverfox was in Trevor the dog's cell, he wouldn't have passed in the manner that he did.

I salute your positions, people are people and the colour of the skin doesn't necessarily qualify as a racial characteristic because like you said, skin colour varies even within one group.

People are people and it takes people to end this divide and human suffering. People have been conditioned to view selves as superior or inferior based on the colour of their skin or the so called-race. Both the oppressor and the oppressed might just cruise through life operating from this frame of reference, hence sustenance of such a human divide.
As far as we know, a human mind is a human mind unless that human mind is abnormal. We all have a soul that needs NOT to be tormented, but we still experience this torment in this year and age even here in the Yukon. People might not have guns to shoot others, nor be dressed in a Police Uniform but this divide is right here, killing people innately. Systemic discrimination and prejudice is still here, destroying people psychologically. Marginalization is pronounced right here in the Yukon, and it is not going to help anyone to uphold it.
The oppressor must remove their foot from the pedal and allow opportunity to all members of the society regardless of their ethnicity. The oppressed must cease to bury their heads in their hands and cultivate self-development in order to be in a good position to press on. Together we must question our own perspectives on selves and others and change, that's when this divide can be released.
Stereotyping each other based on race or anything that differentiates us is ALWAYS invalid.

It appears as though Roddick has been practicing his 'contemplative frown' in the mirror - perhaps to emulate his big brother on the Silver screen. Keep practicing Junior - soon you'll have to do a handstand in order to pretend to be happy. What a group of sad clowns, in an even sadder circus.

We need to talk about racism but we have to do it in a way that does not tear others down. You have to do it in a way that you do not beat others up or paint everyone with same brush. This irresponsible mouthing off by the PM about unconscious bias is the stuff of absolute hokum.

That is the problem. The other problem is that “you people” voted for a guy who has no qualms about pulling the rug out from underneath of you and then blaming you for it. Perhaps the PM is on to something as people understand the world around them by the company they keep...

The comments in this dank hole of the internet only serve to prove the actions of these councillors as correct.
So many people threatened by discussions of racism. If there is no racism problem, what have you all got to lose by talking about it?

I also find it ironic that people here recognize that the views expressed by these councillors are majority views, that will find them political popularity, while disparaging them as such. Is that not populism at its best?

David, it's you and your left leaners that are bringing race into this situation. I was probably one of the first to say to my friends and anyone else listening, that what that cop Chauvin did was wrong. And hopefully, he will pay the full price for his crime. I was in law enforcement years ago and was trained to use intelligence when dealing with criminals.
The information I produced was from factual data, not bias. You too should search for facts instead of, like so many others, just go with the news you hear the first day. Fact: George Floyd was a criminal. He didn't deserve to die, true, but was on his way on a very dangerous trail in his life. Do some research. The truth is out there.

This quotes for you. "Baby's diapers, and politicians should be changed often, and for the same reason."

Up 17 Down 10

People Are People on Jun 7, 2020 at 9:21 pm

@ David - Why are JCs stats biased let alone obviously so? What power of insight do you have? If the stats appear to be disproportionate in one direction or the other is that not proof of the existence of the phenomenon under study? For example, that black males are more likely to commit crimes punishable by jail time? This can be independent of race and have more to do with social status, classism and poverty. No?

For example, black people may be more likely to be poor and this may be a bi-product of racism which may predispose or even necessitate criminal activity for survival and that this issue has greater disparity in another country because of the classist tendencies of that other country. Race then becomes a secondary or tertiary consideration within systems that value wealth as an indicator of status and prestige.

Canada has demonstrated both historic and contemporary prejudices against black people as well. Black people like other Indigenous peoples are over-represented in the Canadian penal system as well and this was occurring while our PM was demonstrating mocking contempt of people of colour with his black-facing, adult-juvenile antics.

Black lives, brown lives, red lives, yellow lives and white lives matter... But even here or especially here we can see the lie - Skin colour does not matter because there are albino Africans, white First Nations with blond and red hair, black Chinese and on and on. So tell me again, what is culture?

Okay everyone... Back to your tribes... Wait, you are a Scandinavian, First Nation, English, Black-Chinese mix? You like to eat Danish pastries, dried fish, cod, Irio and fried rice. Well, you’re in a bit of a pickle now aren’t you! You will have to pick one culture cause in the new world order you must be assigned! It sounds quite complicated.

DNA tests all around everyone line up. Whatever heritage has the highest percentage is the heritage you will be assigned. You will be given a card with your cultural assignment and a list of societal expectations that you must conform to so that you can be readily identified and categorized by others.

The funny thing is I am part Metis and my family has all kinds of different races and cultures in it. Racism runs both ways. So for those speaking against racism open your eyes and get off your high horses. Sick of this BS.

This is good but there are basic issues of safety on our city streets, the appalling issue of our trails being torn up with enforcement nowhere in sight, public intoxication and street drinking in plain sight and the list goes on and on.

Nice to see caring and enlightened councillors. But please work on more civic issues that need addressing.

Up 14 Down 37

David on Jun 6, 2020 at 9:56 pm

@ JC - The "stats" you provided are very vague and obviously very bias. Just because at one point in time a white woman was shot and killed by a black police officer doesn't mean racism doesn't exist. In the US, 1 in 3 black males will be incarcerated at some point in their lives, where as only 1 in 17 white males will be. Black males make up 6% of the US population and yet make up 40% of US prison inmate population.
We face systematic racism in Canada as well, especially towards First Nations peoples. As a white male I think it's great that our councilors are bringing light to these issues. The fact that you seem threatened by this and want to speak out against bringing attention to racism is alarming and disturbing, and only further proves the point that many people would still rather bury their heads in the sand and pretend racism doesn't exist than have these difficult conversations. You are the person in this scenario that needs to educate themselves.

Just for your information madam Curteanu and Sir Roddick, more than 3 times white citizens in the US were killed by police than people of colour. And just recently a white women in the US was shot and killed by a black police officer. This of course didn't make big news - had to dig for this one. Strange you didn't research that before you made your statements about racism. And I think most people who read your remark know what race you are referring to. Before you and other left wingers make statements about racism, do your research and get your facts straight.

Gee without identity politics...how could cultural Marxists use folks as tools, wedges in the game of pandering to fulfill all their personal agendas?

Germs, the planet, racism...perceived racism...fear ...fear ...fear!
Fear helps motivate folks to give up freedoms for some alleged safety.

When humans STOP obsessing on "race" racism will cease to be a relevant tool
political windbags can use for the divide...tactics is all it is.

People are people, some suck...others do not..as much.
Some are awesome, others not as much..fewer not at all.

...and there is only one race, completely inclusive of all, the human race.
Enough of poor me, it is destroying western civilization. by absolute design!!

Hence my participation, as I loathe social(ist) engineers and cultural Marxists
...the elitists they are..cult like actually.
