Nearly $80,000 in cash and in-kind services for festival and special events next year was approved by city council at its meeting Monday.

The $50,000 in funding is conditional on council allocating the money in the annual budget for 2020. Council also approved $28,623 in in-kind services.

Of the 17 applications received for festival and event funding by the Aug. 31 deadline, 15 were deemed by the evaluation committee to meet the eligibility criteria.

The review committee makes recommendations on funding allocations along with the level of in-kind support to be provided to applicants.

The grants and in-kind support for the 15 organizations range in amounts from a low of $800 in cash for the All City Band and its Music for a Winter’s Eve.

At the higher end of the scale is the $6,000 in cash for the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Festival along with $11,782 in in-kind services.

Similarly, the Yukon Quest was granted $6,000 in cash and $6,407 in-kind services to prepare the finish line for this year’s 1,000-mile sled dog face.

In the middle of the pack is the $5,000 in cash and $1,260 in in-kind services for the Yukon Film Society and its annual Available Light Film Festival.

City council on Monday also approved $38,240 in fall recreation grants, or slightly less than half of the $90,606 being sought by 12 organizations.

At the low end is the $1,200 for a workshop organized by the Scottish Country Dance Society and the $2,000 for programming provided by Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Yukon.

At the top end is the $7,500 for the Yukon Art Society and its art and crafts programs and $6,000 for the Whitehorse Curling Club to support programs and operations.

So my tax dollars are going to support the Whitehorse Curling Club but for my own personal recreation I'm expected to fund that myself. Uh-huh. What will council tell the other 25 ethnic dance troupes besides the Scottish dance workshop when they come hat in hand for ethnic dance work shops. Very prudent tax spending decisions council.
