City council was updated Monday evening on the status of the Yukon Imagination Library and its mandate to give books to children.

Leighann Chalykoff, a spokesperson for the non-profit library, said it gives one free book to every Yukon child aged five and under. The children have to be registered to receive the book.

Chalykoff estimates that up to 1,400 books are handed out a month.

She figures up to 100,000 books have been given to kids across the territory.

The library has hosted events in Ross River, Whitehorse, Dawson City and other communities.

Chalykoff said the library has been able to fundraise $50,000 a year, with the Yukon government matching this amount.

The group is currently working to get every eligible child registered to receive books.

She estimates that 66 per cent of eligible kids are registered for the program.

“The program is free,” Chalykoff told council.

She wants to expand registration and spread the word about the program.

Coun. Jan Stick asked how people could get in touch with the library. Chalykoff said the information to sign up is available online, and she has forms.

Stick asked for her to leave some with council, to which Chalykoff agreed.

This is a good program, we had our daughter on the list, and they were pretty much all good books.
Dolly Parton foundation also mails books to kids.
Plus the public library has oodles of Robert Munch and other great classics.
Something about reading a box to your kid at night helps them sleep better then reading off a Tablet
