City council is being asked to officially close an old laneway that is still on the books and runs between city hall and the former station one fire hall.

The lane also runs between city hall and the MacBride Museum.

Council voted at its meeting Monday to bring forward the required bylaw to officially close the laneway.

First reading of the bylaw is scheduled to be voted on at next Monday’s meeting.

Official closure is required to accommodate future renovations and new construction to city hall as part of the city’s building consolidation project.

The consolidation project included, among other things, constructing the new Operations Building, the new fire hall, and plans to reconstruct city hall at a cost currently estimated at $24.6 million.

City hall will become the new services building to accommodate a number of departments currently located elsewhere.

Slow news day. There are old access lane ways all over Whitehorse with buildings on them. Look at the Elijah Smith Federal Building. I know when it was being built. They discovered the lane way behind Scotia Bank keeps going right through it and for that matter went through the Old Federal building it replaced and still carries on up to Royal Bank building and beyond. City should review all lane ways they might get a big surprise.
