Council approves series of grants

Thirteen organizations have been approved for festival and special event funding and in-kind support.

Thirteen organizations have been approved for festival and special event funding and in-kind support.

City council OKed the $50,000 in cash funding and $44,765 in in-kind support at its meeting Monday.

The following three signature events received the most support:

• The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous Society has been approved for $6,000 in cash and $22,493 in in-kind support for the Yukon Sourdough Festival, Feb. 11-27, 2022 .

The total budget for the festival is estimated at $804,646, according to an administrative report to council.

• The Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism was approved for $6,000 in cash and $7,216 in in-kind support for its Adaka Cultural Festival next summer. The total budget to host the festival is estimated at $620,000.

• The Yukon Quest International Association was approved for $6,000 in cash and $5,256 in in-kind support for its sled dog race next February. The total budget is estimated at $36,730.

The remaining 10 organizations received mostly cash funding, ranging from $800 to $6,000.

The All-City Band Society, for instance, was approved for $800 in cash for its Music for a Winter’s Eve event on Dec. 12-13.

The Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre was approved for $4,000 to support events on National Indigenous People’s Day next June 21. The total budget to host the event is estimated at $60,000.

The Heart of Riverdale Community Centre will receive $6,000 for its CypherFest Street Dance and Music Festival next July. The total budget to host the event is estimated at $87,969.

L’Association franco-yukonnaise was approved for $1,500 for its Solstice Saint-Jean event on June 23. The total budget is estimated at $34,675.

The Yukon Circus Society was approved for $1,700 for its production of Dogtown: The Musical next September. The total budget is estimated at $179,875.

The Yukon Film Society was approved for $$5,000 in cash and $5,670 in in-kind support for its Available Light Film Festival in February. The total budget is estimated $258,685.

The Yukon First Nation Chamber of Commerce can expect $1,500 for its Re-Awaking event next October. The total budget is $55,7000.

The Nakai Theatre Ensemble was approved for $4,000 in support of the Nakai Theatre Pivot Festival in late January. The total budget to host the festival is estimated at $60,385.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 254 was approved for $5,000 in cash and $4,129 in in-kind support for its Canada Day celebration on July 1. The total budget is estimated at $47,104.

The Yukon Arts Centre is set to receive $2,500 in support of its Midnight Sun Moppets Children’s Festival in May. The total budget is estimated at $32,612.
