Conservatives acclaim a candidate for 2019 vote

If Yukon MP Larry Bagnell is looking to return to Team Trudeau and run in next year’s federal election, he now knows one of the candidates he’d be officially be up against: Conservative Jonas Smith.

If Yukon MP Larry Bagnell is looking to return to Team Trudeau and run in next year’s federal election, he now knows one of the candidates he’d be officially be up against: Conservative Jonas Smith.

That became known after Smith was acclaimed as the Tories’ candidate in the Yukon come 2019’s decision day, set for Oct. 21.

One of Smith’s rumoured contestants had been Ryan Leef, who assumed Ottawa duties and served as MP during Stephen Harper’s 2011-15 government.

Leef told the Star late last month he would not be running for any party, ruling out any formal involvement in the 2019 campaign – including for his close ally and one-time Tory Maxime Bernier.

Bernier left the federal Tories in late August to start his own party, now deemed the People’s Party of Canada.

Meanwhile, a Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) spokesperson confirmed to the Star Monday afternoon that Smith, 44, was the only candidate registered as of last Thursday afternoon’s deadline.

A Tory release announcing Smith as the party’s candidate confirmed this, with leader Andrew Scheer congratulating him.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone who reached out and provided me with invaluable comments and insights over the past weeks and of course, for the overwhelming support I received,” said Smith.

“I now look forward to connecting with Yukoners across the territory over the coming months to listen to their concerns and their priorities, so that together we may craft solutions for a Yukon that puts people before government.

“I will work tirelessly every day to demonstrate to Yukoners how (party leader) Andrew Scheer’s leadership is focused on helping Yukoners, and all Canadians, with lower taxes, controlled government spending and an economic plan that creates prosperity and opportunity for everyone,” Smith added in the release.

While he went uncontested for the Conservative nomination, Smith may be set to tee off against veteran Bagnell.

After first being elected in 2000, Bagnell served until 2011, when he was ousted by Leef.

The Tory faithful’s reign lasted four years, with Bagnell assuming office again in the 2015 election under now-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, winning more than half of the votes.

In 2015, Leef came in a distant second with 24 per cent of the votes, just ahead of the NDP, which drew 19 per cent, and the Greens, with just under three per cent of the vote.

The Conservatives now have more than 130 candidates nominated.

As Smith begins his campaigning, Bagnell is still mulling on whether to make another run.

As for Bagnell’s potential candidacy in 2019, the Liberal MP told the Star Tuesday, “I have not made any final decision, but it is very likely.

“The longer you are here, the more you can deliver ... there is a very good chance (of another candidacy). I just have to finalize my decision, and I will probably do that relatively soon.”

No one has publicly stepped forward for the NDP nor the Green Party.

No offence.
Conservative -centrist seems more fitting.
Any idea of any real work this guy has done?

What was their hurry? The election is more than a year away. They should have at least waited until after the municipal election to see if more worthy candidates than Pazkey's baggage handler might come forward. He's already alienated the veterans that comprise a big segment of the Yukon conservative voters. Oh well, there's always hope that Bernier's party might come up with "the fiscally conservative, socially progressive, new to Yukon politics female candidate that I was hoping would show up".

The future, eh? Looks to me like a throwback to Pirates of the Caribbean. But surely pirate is the shadow lurking behind the conservative mask.

Larry has served us well but his time has passed. New young Conservative blood is needed. Jonas is the future.

The big problem for me is Andrew Scheer. Bernier I would have considered voting for. I think our candidate here is a party hack who will be a good soldier no matter who is pulling his strings, like his mentor Darryl was.

I agree that it's a disappointment that once again, no socially progressive, fiscally conservative, female candidate. Has the Yukon Party and former PC party up here ever voted in a female leader? Telling, isn't it.

Isn't this the guy that had a hissy fit about the new chief of staff when he was the EA for the Paz and just up and quit?? Will he quit as an MP when things don't go his way? I don't trust quitters. Disappointing this is the best the cons can do.

Maybe Smith could play army man with Ryan Leef, wear camouflage and hide in ditches since he is too young to serve his country.

Get ready for a parade of Conservative Party elite coming through Whitehorse in the next year trying to convince us that this bottom level candidate is worthy of our vote

Welcome to THE Yukon Andrew Scheer - Lisa Raitt - Rona Ambrose - Jason Kenney - ......

ACCLAIMED YOU SAY ?

WOW !
In how bad a shape can the Yukon Conservative Party be if the only person interested in the nomination is the guy who ran the recent disastrous Pasloski campaign ?

From all the neo-conservative types on the comments section of this news feed , there was only one person ready to stand for the "conservative" ideals, whatever that may be. Where's Wilf, the far right commentary on so many issues. We didn't see him throw his name in the hat. I suppose the conservative party had to throw some red meat to the dogs in the election, and what better guy then the Paz guy. Perhaps one day the Conservatives will modify their platform to get into the 21st century,

As long time conservative points out, Smith babbling on about the military was a big turn off. Seems to be the type that will tell voters what they want to hear just for the vote and the type that will toe the party line 100% whether it's good for the Yukon or not. Looking like all optics, no substance.

The Bernier thing is very interesting and I'll definitely look at voting that way if they come up with a decent candidate that is a centrist with a small 'l' libertarian streak and free of the far right bad craziness that is the Donald Trump camp. Time will tell with that.

Anyways, poor choices so far for the next election with Larry needing to retire badly, the NDP too busy drinking champagne that they don't care about blue collar votes anymore and the Greens no different than the NDP.

As someone who supports people who suffer with mental health issues, I could never vote Conservative, at least not in the party's current form.

Every time they are put into power they go after social programs to make cuts. Mental health should be treated with compassion and a hand up, not scorn and as a burden on the system. People should not be forced to start "Go Fund Me" accounts and beg for money to help them while struggling with their issues. It is very sad that people are reduced to such things while conservatives promote tax cuts.

They also target the most vulnerable groups of people who already have the highest rates of suicide in Canada such as the LGBT community and First Nations. You will never see conservatives out supporting a gay pride parade for instance and many of them still vote down any government initiatives aimed at inclusiveness. To make things worse you often see their supporters ridicule the beautiful rainbow crosswalks and complain about it as a waste of money. With regards to First Nations, both the Liberals and Conservatives have treated them less than fairly, but the Conservatives have been far worse, constantly trying to blame and shame them for the enduring problems they face instead of meeting with them and treating them with respect.

When it comes time to vote, please support the NDP, the Liberals, the Greens or anyone else besides the conservatives. Don't support the one party which lacks empathy, compassion and respect for the most vulnerable. Someday you may find yourself facing inner demons (be it severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, suicidal thoughts etc) and will understand how important it is to have people care about you and have the necessary social programs in place to ensure you get the help you need.

Yea would have to agree. Larry is pretty much a shoe-in this time around. Throwing cash around like a drunken sailor, and the fact that this is all the cons have to offer says it all. Sacrificial lamb, Mint Sauce anyone?

Look at these guys still with the infantile Trudeau attack ads. Remember how well that worked out the last time?
I haven’t been a huge fan of Grandpa Bagnell but sending what will without a doubt be a conservative Opposition MP will do Yukoners no good. Nice hair though.

Well, after hearing this mans comments on the military. Using others service for his own gain, and not serving one day himself (on account of “he was too young”). I’ll be sure to vote for who ever Maxime Berneir puts forward.
