The woman injured in Wednesday evening’s collision on the Alaska Highway was medevaced to Vancouver in critical condition.

A hospital spokesperson said this morning her condition has been upgraded to stable.

A baby less than a year old in the same vehicle, a Honda Civic that ended up on the side of the road with the front driver’s side smashed in, was assessed by paramedics on scene and didn’t require further medical attention.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at about 6:45 p.m. near Trails North in Porter Creek.

The jaws of life were used to extricate the 25-year-old woman and infant from the car.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the other car, a Toyota Corolla, flee the scene on foot.

The suspect was found nearby by Whitehorse RCMP.

He was arrested and transported to Whitehorse General Hospital for treatment of injuries believed to be from the collision, police said in a news release issued later Thursday.

Ian Moore, 48, of Whitehorse has been charged with:

• failing to provide a breath sample;

• failing to stop at the scene of an accident; and

• causing bodily harm by street racing.

He was scheduled to appear in court this afternoon for a bail hearing.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Alcohol consumption is believed to be a contributing factor, police said.

They are also investigating the possibility that a third vehicle was involved in the incident, and that two vehicles were street racing.

The Alaska Highway was partially closed at the time while an RCMP collision analyst worked on scene.

Anyone with any information about the collision is asked to contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5555.

As bad as it looks Ian is a good guy I just did a month in jail with him. He has remorse and had no intention to inflict injury on anyone. If he ran then he would have got evading charge. He's doing a pen bit give the guy a break.

For those disliking my comment, please note that the Star edited it and the context is now lost. I'm not defending Ian's actions, just expressing regret.

While I also echo the thoughts of other with respect to the innocent victims of this stupid, cowardly act, many of us out there know Ian and remember him not as the person who caused this accident, but as a bright, athletic, future hopeful young man from high school.

I hope that any witnesses come forward and call the RCMP, please. Sheri was coming home from a baseball game with her 7 month old baby when this happened. This type of stupidity/cruelty cannot not go unpunished. Certainly at this age they should know better. Yes, it can happen in an instant and it can happen to your family, it most certainly has happened to ours. .please help to take them off the road. We almost lost two of our girls, we don't want this to happen to any of you. Thank you for your support Yukoners!

This shows how messed up some people on the road are. Running away- really! This is not the time to listen to another sob story and go easy on a person who caused an accident and hurt an innocent person.

Serious crime = justifiable punishment.
