Collision kills local woman

One Whitehorse woman died and another was injured Saturday night in a head-on collision along the Alaska Highway about one kilometre south of the Fish Lake Road.

One Whitehorse woman died and another was injured Saturday night in a head-on collision along the Alaska Highway about one kilometre south of the Fish Lake Road.

Barbara MacKenzie, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 42-year-old Whitehorse woman who was driving the other vehicle was medivaced Sunday to the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.

She is suffering from multiple fractures, though her injuries are not life-threatening, Val Pyke, spokeswoman for the Whitehorse General Hospital, said this morning. The identity of the injured woman is not being released.

Whitehorse RCMP Sgt. John Sutherland said this morning the fatal accident is still under investigation.

MacKenzie was travelling south in her blue 1996 Dodge pickup truck. The other driver was travelling north in her 1992 Ford Explorer, Sutherland said.

The road at the time was reported to be ice- and snow-covered.
