College wants new name for access road

On the eve of Yukon College morphing into Canada’s only university north of the 60th parallel, the college is seeking a name change for its main access road.

The road is currently named College Drive, and the college would like it renamed University Drive.

City council on Monday passed first and second readings of the bylaw required to effect the change in names.

There will be no disruption to mail delivery as both the college and Whitehorse Correctional Centre are on the Yukon government mail network, says the administrative report to council.

The portion of the roadway which runs in front of the senior housing apartment building, or 600 College Drive, will remain as College Drive.

The legislative assembly passed the Yukon University Act on Nov. 21, 2019.

The institute will be known as YukonU.

The college will officially become Yukon University on May 8, to be followed the next day with the convocation ceremony of the first graduates of YukonU.

In addition to two home-grown university degree programs currently available at Yukon College, there are a handful of university degrees available through partnerships with the universities of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Jack - only the faculty! Definitely not support staff. And who knows how many of the faculty are qualified to teach university courses..?

I wonder if the salaries and benefits will now have to automatically increase because it's a 'university' rather than a college?

What is the cost? on Mar 2, 2020 at 2:28 pm

Taxpayers should demand to know how much the transition has and will cost. I bet it’s astonishing. Millions, or close to it, I’m guessing.

Take a note from the Talking Heads - “we’re on the Road to Nowhere”.

We need more qualified tradespeople, not more unemployable people with faux 'university' degrees.
This is little more than overpaid bureaucrats trying to create a false legacy with our tax dollars.

The road to hell is paved with good intention. University Drive ? Oh dear. An on-line DIY MBA printed on Yukon U headed notepaper is enough to generate a healthy dose of laughter to bring anyone out of a case of clinical depression.

I would have preferred to have seen it called 'University of the Yukon Territory'. Far cooler name than what they have selected.

Pretentious Avenue would be more apt.

@Anie,
What, you mean go out and learn we are merely a small speck in this entire World. Now that is just crazy talk. No, stay home, don't learn any new technologies and or how to become more innovative. (Complete sarcasm)

And I hope nobody accidentally gets lost by mistaking the Corrections Centre for the University. LOL. With all the negativity, I just had to cheer up the atmosphere a bit.

Anie: Yeah kids, here are some of the things you can learn in Canada's left wing Us: you can learn to be a liberal and socialist; you can learn to skip classes and go out protesting about something and even get a credit or two for it; you can learn more of the art of tattooing - or is that called inking now? And so many other exciting things that make for better citizenshipery. Oh yeah, there's basket weaving. I believe there's a degree program for that now. Cool!

Erik: I totally agree with you. I have taken courses since the old Vocational School. Good quality teachers. Welcome University of Yukon.

It only makes sense to rename the road now and I guess we'll just have to wait and see if it makes sense to have turned the college into a university. I would bet that finances had a lot to do with that idea and decision. I see a lot of foreign students on the way. Cha-ching, cha-ching!

How about ‘Remedial Boulevard’ ? Or , ‘In Name Only Avenue’ ? Or , DayCare Drive’ ? Or , ‘Sham Street’ ? ... or ... Yukon College .

Yeah, change the name, then maybe some fool will think it's a real university. But then what will all those Yukon grade 12 graduates do if they can't immediately go to the college for upgrading? Parents, if you care about your kids futures, skip this pseudo university and encourage them (insist if you can) to go outside to university. Then they can learn something real while also discovering life outside the Yukon bubble.

All this aside The University of Tuktoyaktuk marketing scheme was brilliant and sold thousands of shirts and ballcaps. I had a shirt back in the 80's. The shirt read University of Tuktoyaktuk on the back and on the front... TUK U

Branding, including t-shirts, ball caps, bumper stickers and the like do not make it so. We are living in a world of false advertising.

A lot of negativity out there!
I think it’s a great idea, I went to the college to upgrade before I got my degree at U of A, and it was a really good school. We need to show more pride in what we have and promote it. Renaming the road is just a bare start.

Think this should happen in a decade or two once the university proves it's viable.
