College ranks third for research intensity

Yukon College ranked third for research intensity among all Canadian colleges,

Yukon College ranked third for research intensity among all Canadian colleges, according to the list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges by Research Infosource Inc.

The study, released late last year, reports that while research activity levels have increased across Canadian colleges, research income has not.

Despite the fact that college research incomes has slowed throughout the country, Yukon College’s research income increased 12 per cent, at $4.7 million, alongside large colleges whose student population overshadows Yukon College’s small northern population.

“Our small northern college is continuing to grow its research portfolio while focusing on student involvement and the continued development of research partnerships with First Nations, industry, government and entrepreneurs,” Clint Sawicki, the college’s interim vice-president research, said in a statement.

“We anticipate that the 2016 research results will be even more impressive for Yukon College, as we have just received funding for a number of research programs in the areas of northern energy innovation, and community climate change adaptation.”

Over the last four years, Yukon College has placed in the top three positions out of the 50 research colleges in Canada.

Expanding northern research and innovation is one of Yukon College’s strategic directions and an important element in its gradual transition into a university.

“It is through research and innovation that Yukon can improve the lives of northerners by solving northern problems with northern expertise,” the college said in the statement.

“Yukon College is working throughout the territory with First Nations and local governments, industry, and communities, to address northern challenges.”

Additional information on Canada’s Top 50 Research Colleges can be found on the Research Infosource Inc. website.

The Yukon Research Centre is the college’s research arm.

The centre’s thematic research areas include: biodiversity monitoring, climate change, cold climate innovation, mine water remediation, social science, and technology innovation.

The centre is funded by the Department of Education, with funding for innovation from the Department of Economic Development.

A science story with no comment from PSG. I find that interesting and somewhat revealing.

I don't think we are blowing our own horn loud enough at Yukon College. On the CBC site a Ryerson College person is getting great accolades and press for inventing an Artic green house. Well, we've had that happening here at Yukon College for a number of years now. Someone should straighten those Eastern copy-cats out.

Yukoners would like to understand why certain individuals vote the way they do on the comments on Jan 7, 2017 at 1:57 pm

I made comment about this piece. 8 voted for 10 against it. Can the people who voted for it supply a line why did they and the same for against. I have 1000's of people I connect with in the Yukon and some want to understand how and why some people vote on comment, on such an important subject as this one is to the Yukon future.
Wilf Carter, thanks for taking the time to respond. You do not have to add your name, if you don't want. Happy New Year every one and have a great 2017. Better times ahead if we be positive and work together.

Top in "Research intensity". Haha. Wow. Impressive. Where can I sign up.
Sounds almost as pointless and useless like a campaign slogan

The Yukon College is only on the edge building a great educational future on Jan 5, 2017 at 12:51 pm

building a great educational future for the Yukon. Doing simple research on Yukon issues is only the start and can expand into areas of cold specialty northern foods, forest products and many other unique ideas. Negative comments don't help anything. Once we reach a certain point maybe we receive private funds to do contract research. Research is one of the keys to the Yukon social economic future. Wilf Carter

Probably means that they have the third lowest student population per instructor in Canada. Time to turn it into a think tank or government department.

Instead of doing research, how about inventing some solutions. Now that would bring in a nobel prize. Personally getting tired of our tax money being spent on dumb useless research.

"research intensity" - as meaningless and spurious a metric as could ever be devised, even by the most imaginative and underemployed academic on a Friday afternoon in the common room between classes.
