Yukon College officials will be meeting with a resident of the mature students dorm who has been charged with sexual assault to determine if he will be permitted to return.

The student was suspended from the 12-person mature residence for a week after Whitehorse RCMP were called to the college early last Friday morning.

An assault had been reported by a female college student, college spokeswoman Spence Hill said in an interview.

The mature residence is for students 25 years and older.

Police said Thursday the investigation found the complainant had met up with the accused at a bar earlier in the evening and returned to his room at the dorm. He then allegedly forced himself on her despite her protests, police said.

She later left the room and phoned police. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor, police said.

Hill noted a memo was sent out to all staff and students reporting a resident had been charged with sexual assault and had been released, with the matter remaining before the courts.

The college immediately suspended him from the residence for a week.

Neither the accused nor the complainant have been on-campus since last Friday, though Hill said there was no suspension in place from the accused attending classes.

With the matter before the courts, she explained, the college is limited in what action it can take.

'The safety and security of all students and staff continues to be a high priority of the college,' reads the memo, dated Thursday, from Jock Bryce, the school's director of human resources services.

The future of the residence suspension was to be decided following a meeting this afternoon, Hill said.

In addition, there has been a meeting with students at the residence to discuss the situation.

'They needed to know the facts,' she said.

While Hill wasn't at that gathering, she said other staff members have told her the students expressed their anger, frustration and sadness.

They also wanted to know what will happen at the end of the one-week suspension.

Students will continue to be updated on the situation following the meeting and as matters progress, Hill said.

Security is also being reviewed, she said. The college has commissionaires overseeing security at the campus and have been in discussions with them.

John Carter White, 37, has been charged with sexual assault.

He has been released from custody with the condition that he have no direct or indirect contact with the complainant.

He must also abstain from the consumption and possession of alcohol and not attend the residence of the complainant.
