The black bear roaming the Yukon College campus is on his way to a new home.

The bruin was caught at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in one of the live traps set by conservation officers earlier this week, enticed by the strong aromas of pineapple, molasses and sardines.

COs brought the bear to the Environment Yukon office to gather data through blood samples and check the bear’s weight and fur.

He is a two-year-old male in excellent health, said department spokesman Dennis Senger.

Conservation officers tagged the bear and relocated it outside the city this morning.

“It seemed to be doing fine in terms of getting the food that it needed,” said Senger of the bear’s condition. “Hopefully, it will do well and find other berries out there and continue on.”

The bear was spotted several times in the past week near the college and the Yukon Arts Centre, eating berries and walking around the grounds. Senger said earlier this week that there were signs it was becoming habituated to people.

Students were advised to be aware as they travelled around the area.

“We are also grateful to all the students, staff and members of the public who called to update us on the bear’s location the past few days,” college spokesman Michael Vernon said in an email.
