As gardening season draws closer, tenants at 600 College Rd. will be getting set to use their own compost in their garden plots this season thanks to a $1,228 grant from the city.
At Monday night's city council meeting, members approved the environmental fund grant to go to the group to set up a compost program at the seniors' apartment building on the Yukon College property.
The entire project is expected to cost $2,726 to get started, with the city's grant going to cover the costs of containers for composting and recycling.
"The association is taking a lead role in environmental stewardship by promoting waste diversion and local food supply in a multi-family residence," notes an administrative report on the grant.
"The project is an innovative way to divert waste, given the current lack of commercial composting programs.
"The program could be used as a template for waste diversion and community gardens in other multi-family residences."
