It’s more than two years away, but the city is already making plans to celebrate the nation’s 150th birthday in style.
At a recent city council meeting, members voted in favour of confirming with the Canadian Capital Cities Organization the city’s interest in being part of the Communities In Bloom National Garden Celebration in 2017 when Canada turns 150.
Coun. Mike Gladish represents the city on the capital cities group.
It has proposed the garden celebration across the country’s diverse landscape with a number of goals in mind.
Those included, as city staff put it in a report to council, to “celebrate our garden heritage; engage citizens in the celebration; promote our gardens as tourist destinations; and create a lasting legacy.”
The capital cities group is starting its work on the garden celebration early by first looking at whether there is interest in participating from the nation’s capital cities, which may help secure funding for the initiative.
“The organization is requesting that the City of Whitehorse provide input into the project to support their application for funding from Canadian Heritage and potential sponsors,” the report to council noted.
“They are also requesting that the city construct a garden, dependent on funding.”
Council was unanimous in its decision to be on-board with the gardening project.
First, Coun. Kirk Cameron was quick to suggest that the city go beyond the gardening initiative in marking the nation’s 150th birthday, which he stated is a “big deal.”
Coun. John Streicker then echoed Cameron’s remarks, adding his confidence that city staff will begin working on plans for the larger celebration.
“This is just a first piece,” he said of the garden celebration’s role in celebrating 2017.

Whats wrong with a nice cake and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to you Dear Canada? Even having them sitting around the table with a catered lunch talking about a this celebration is more than I, as a taxpayer, want to pay for.
However if Dan and posse want to pay for it themselves... ...

Someone else should represent the city on this one. Mike Gladish seems hell bent on allowing motorized vehicles on the Rotary Centennial Bridge which will desrupt the enjoyment of pedestrians on the bridge and nearby trail portions. If the city destroys our showcase trail this gig should be cancelled.

Isn't that what happened with Lorne Metropolit's Yukon Gardens? Ag land and grants in exchange for creating a Yukon Garden show casing northern plants. Which is now divided into lots.
