The City of Whitehorse is preparing to paint the town red on New Year’s Eve ... or at least the sky.

The city is putting on its usual party to usher in the new year, along with the traditional fireworks celebration.

“Join us on Sunday, Dec. 31 for a New Year’s Eve celebration,” the city posted on its social media feeds Monday.

“Come to the Canada Games Centre for an afternoon of fun! Crafts in the Kid’s Club and themed games from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free skating from 12 to 3:30 p.m.”

The party will then move to Shipyards Park from 7 to 9 p.m. for more free activities.

Bring your skates and sleds, and enjoy apple cider or hot chocolate (bring your own mug).

The 10- to 15-minute fireworks show is set to begin at 8 p.m., weather permitting.

Please keep these tips in mind on New Year’s Eve:

• This is a popular event, so consider vehicle-pooling or using active transportation.

• Do not park on Black Street or Front Street by Fire Hall #1. Emergency vehicles need enough space to safely come and go.

• Pets are often startled by fireworks. Please take extra precautions and leave your animals at home on New Year’s Eve.

Leave fireworks to the professionals. The use of fireworks is strictly prohibited within city limits at any time of year.
