City out to reduce mosquito population

The city is taking action to reduce the mosquito population in and around Whitehorse through its annual mosquito control program.
The initiative, which begins in April every year and runs until October, uses a bacterium-containing larvicide.
This bacterium is specific in its control of mosquitoes and biting flies, the city said Monday.
It does not reproduce in the environment, and has no effect on non-target insects, fish, birds or mammals, including humans, livestock and pets.
The program targets mosquito habitats such as swamps, marshes, shallow ponds, non-flowing ditches, and snowmelt in depressions.
Residents can reduce these mosquito habitats and development sources on their own properties by removing standing water, and regularly draining and refilling wading pools, livestock watering troughs and birdbaths.
If the bugs are getting to you, you can reduce the likelihood of a bite in a number of ways:
• Ensure window screens are in good condition.
• Wear loose, light-coloured clothing.
• Be aware of outdoor activities near landscaped areas, marshes, ponds, lake margins and forested or overgrown areas where mosquitoes may rest.
• Consider using insect repellent.

You can also leave a message for the city’s mosquito control program biologist through the BITE line at 633-2483 (BITE), or directly with the city’s contractor, Duka Ltd., at 1-604-881-4565 or at 1-800-681-3472.

Bat houses have to be located near water to attract bats.

Lea, please don't confuse this so called "Wilderness City" with the facts - as their mind has been made up....Fast idle, zero miles per gallon is the Whitehorse way.

Visiting Tibetan Rinpoche, 1977, the Bodhisattva vow not to kill anything. John Hatch, " what about mosquitoes?" Rinpoche, "Are there many mosquitoes in Yukon?" John, "it's the mosquito capital of the world." Rinpoche, " Ahh, a good place to test the vow!"

Has the city considered that mosquitos are a primary food source for many different bird and fish species? The suggestion of building bat houses is a great idea.

I think we should create a "Town Square" for the mosquito's. Maybe we could create a "mosquito zone" in the one already on Main Street. There's tons of room, lol.

Why not create a whole bunch of bat houses?
