City, finance manager part company
The city's finance manager has been terminated.
The city's finance manager has been terminated.
Robert Fendrick, the city's director of operations, told the Star this afternoon that finance manager Ray Goruick was terminated Tuesday.
'It wasn't a dismissal; it's what they call termination without cause. The opposite to that would be termination with cause,' Fendrick said, explaining that there is no specific reason for Goruick's departure.
'It simply wasn't working out for the manager or the employer. Basically, both parties agreed to go their separate ways,' he said.
'It was mainly around a difference in management styles.'
Fendrick said a severance package has been offered to Goruick which will take into account his 16-plus years of service.
Details on the amount of money offered cannot be disclosed, Fendrick said.
'We want to thank Ray for his service. Sixteen-and-a-half years is a long time.'
City council, Fendrick added, has no decision-making authority over the hiring and firing of employees other than the city manager.
Tony Lomas, the city's manager of human resources, said this morning he could not speak to the situation as it is confidential.
'There's really nothing I can say as a human resources manager,' Lomas said.
'It's a personnel matter; that's all I can say.'
The pay scale for a city finance manager, he said, is between $83,000 and $94,000.
Mayor Bev Buckway said this morning she cannot comment on the issue.
'As you know, mayor and council do not get involved with personnel issues. I would refer you to Fendrick,' she said.
City councillor Doug Graham said he was informed of the situation by Buckway on Wednesday morning.
'The mayor called me yesterday morning to inform me that the manager of finance is no longer with the city,' Graham said today.
Graham said he is not aware of the details surrounding Goruick's termination.
Goruick could not be reached for comment.
