City councillor Laura Cabott
City councillor Laura Cabott announced today her intention to run for mayor in the municipal election this October.
City councillor Laura Cabott announced today her intention to run for mayor in the municipal election this October.
“I want to be your next mayor,” said the long-time Yukon lawyer and business owner.
“Whitehorse is a vibrant, energetic place, and I want to make it even better. I have the vision, the leadership skills and the background to do just that.”
Cabott, 58, said she is running on her long history of community service, business success and her record during her first term on city council.
“I ran for council promising to ‘Work for Whitehorse,’ and I have kept my promise.”
Cabott cites some of her work with fellow councillors and community members that has supported local businesses by introducing a new procurement policy and ensuring local content in many of the city’s requests for proposals.
She said steps to modernize the city’s transit and parking meter systems, an improved wildland fire response and emergency preparedness plan, and densifying housing in key areas are just some of the actions taken during her term on council.
She also cited the continued upgrading of aging infrastructure and ensuring that key wilderness/recreational areas and trails are protected and maintained.
Cabott said she intends to bring new ideas to address key issues as mayor.
“Working with other governments and key stakeholders, I want to tackle the housing shortage, grow our local economy and tourism sector and respond to the challenges of climate change.”
Coun. Samson Hartland has also announced his intention to run for mayor.
Patti Balsillie, a long-time resident with business experience, was the first to announce her candidacy for mayor.
Cabott said her three-year term on council has been a learning curve that has required lots of time and work.
“I had some good support from my fellow councillors,” she said.
She said the term on council, her community and volunteer work and her career as a lawyer for the past 30 years have have given her the skills to lead the city.
She knows the art of collaboration and co-operation, she said.
Tackling the housing shortage was part of her campaign commitment in 2018, and when people ask her what she’s done, she says not enough.
The city, she said, is getting further behind in addressing the housing shortage.
It needs to do something different, she insists.
As mayor, she would commit to completing the update on the Official Community Plan within six months, as much of the work has been done.
Cabott said the city can take more of a leading role in encouraging housing development through providing greater incentives.
The development of the large lot at Fifth Avenue and Rogers Street, for instance, requires a berm running along the escarpment for safety reasons, but a berm would cost $1 million, she said.
She said $1 million is a big expense for a developer.
As a means of encouraging development of that land, the city could build the berm and recover its cost through taxes, she said.
Cabott said supporting the Kwanlin Dun First Nation as it brings its settlement lands to the housing market through long-term lease agreements is essential.
Long-term lease agreements for housing on First Nation land is common in areas down south, she said.
Through her leadership roles chairing multiple boards and committees, working with First Nations and volunteering her time, Cabott said, she has demonstrated that she gets things done.
“I enjoy working with people to find practical solutions,” she said. “I want to make a real difference.”
Cabott said over the next few months, more details regarding her platform will be released on her social media network.
Mayor Dan Curtis said earlier this year he is not seeking re-election.

@Mikey: he did a couple of elections ago, didn’t end well as we all know. Doesn’t stop him from commenting on everything though, definitely no humbling lesson learned.

I won't be voting for someone that wants to choke our main arteries by dropping the speed limit vs enforcement of existing signage. That kind of poor decision making does not deserve a promotion.

When is Wilf throwing his hat in the ring for mayor?

I see all the Liberals are coming forward to support Cabot. Surprise, surprise. Now that Cabot has joined the race we only need to see Ronald MacDonald jump in as well. Then we would have the two clowns to entertain us.
Cabot has achieved zip and worse represents only her own interests and that of her Liberal friends. A train wreck on the loose for sure...

Laura is not down home folksy-smarmy, but she is smart, generous, and gets things done.
Sometimes a person who is too fast moving and competent makes people nervous, and I'd say that's going to be her challenge. It makes me a little nervous to hear she's got plans to re-do the OCP in six months, and has very definite ideas about getting housing built. I think she can do it but she has to slow down and let the public wrap their heads around it all.
I will be supporting Laura for Mayor. She is very competent, and I know for a fact that she supports the community in ways that others do not see. She's not showing up at the buffet table and glad handing, she's really working and giving.

Two good points you brought forward yesterday. A nice response to Wes...

@ Wes; Are you saying that all those entitled to vote are only entitled to give positive opinions on an open forum? If everyone who dared to say they are not in favor of any candidate put their name forward for office, I think we would have a long ballot list. Voters and their preferences are a part of council because they make the decision on who is elected.

Comon Wes. Not everybody can put their names on an election list. Not everybody can do that particular job. But everyone has a right to give their opinion. You're like someone I knew years ago, always saying the same thing to shut down a discussion.

I gotta say, it bothers me when someone who wants to become a community leader tell the people, they have a "vision". Bells start to go off.

To all those complaining about the candidate, and her faults, and you won't vote for her, fine. However, complain all you want, but unless you're willing to step up and and put your name forward, then it's probably best just to keep quiet.
Politics is a thankless job. Just look at the comments politicians get to deal with. No wonder we don't get the best (necessarily) people, would you want to do it?

I may vote for Laura and she is a good candidate for mayor.
We need a mayor who represents us fairly. We need to make Whitehorse a safer place to live. Whitehorse needs cheaper land and housing options.
Council has to stop pandering to some special interest groups like the KSA and represent the largely silent majority.

I think not Ms Cabot. You lack the experience. A one term councillor as opposed to Samson who is a 3rd term councillor, with, I might add, a "proven" track record offers a far better solution.
I don't trust your politics. You have been tightly involved with the Yukon Liberal party over the decades. I fear you will behave no better than what we have right now. Samson will bring a breathe of fresh air without a hidden agenda.

I just have to say at the election in October, I will not vote for anyone who voted to lower the speed limit to 40 in the downtown core.

Interesting commentary.. very liberal of Ms. Cabot to have accomplished SO MUCH in just 3 little years. I have also found Ms. Cabot to be condescending.
I am not very happy with the entire council and would have liked to see a wholesale turnover. EXCEPT perhaps, Samson. Common sense is not a flower that grows in everyone's garden. But, I have seen more common sense responses from him than anyone else. He is the only one I ever heard say.. "But, we don't have any money" .

Great! Laura is smart, extremely capable, and business driven.
She is EXACTLY the type of leader this city needs in order to modernize itself and address the challenges of our rapidly growing community.

If you "...want to make a real difference" don't run. The last thing we need is another Liberal in the Mayor's chair. The one leaving was destructive enough and was only there as a stepping stone. Thankfully the road ran out for him.
I suspected your motives when you ran for council - this only brings home who you really are - an opportunist. Your performance on council was tied to other members and more often than not you were just like the dog in the back of window in the car.
Heartland has at least paid his dues and shown he is not one of the nodding - yes sir, no sir type. He has made a difference and does not have lofty intentions as you are showing to have. With him - what see is what you will get.

So, what is Ms Cabot's political ideology? What political party does she support? I think it's important for candidates to clarify this.

The role of Mayor, at one time was community promotion, kissing babies and shaking hands and handing over key’s to the City to those that earned it.
A figure head - a team player!
This gal seems to think her role is that of a manager. She almost comes across as having a dictorial approach. “Her vision!”
She seem to think that in her short 3 year term she has solved many of the COW’s problems “with good support from my fellow councillors,”
The real question is did she support her fellow councillors?
Sounds like she wants to be a leader, not a team player.
No vote from me..sorry.

So we have the following:
Samson - 3 council terms
Laura - 1 council term
Patti - zero council terms
I personally believe in succession planning and think the person with the most terms might be best suited to be Mayor. In eastern countries you have to come up the ranks, you don’t just get to decide you are going to me Mayor, MLA or President.

Yay! A rogue who did all of this on her own and wants to show us "her vision." Sorry, OCP is what guides Whitehorse. Administration is what decides what happens. Please stop acting like you've done something that no other councilor didn't do. Your resume for "what you've accomplished" is actually "what council has accomplished." I found dealing with you, rude, dismissive, and very tunnel vision'ed.

Careful with that idea. There are property owners sitting on dilapidated buildings just waiting for the City to waive tipping fees as 'incentive to develop'. Incentives can very quickly turn into corporate handouts.
