By Whitehorse Star on June 7, 2022

City council is being asked to award $158,366 to 17 community organizations to assist with their property taxes.

“Recommended grants vary for each organization based on the policy’s tiered criteria, and range between 50 per cent and 100 per cent of the property taxes owed by the organization,” says the administrative report prepared for council.

“Applicants are required to submit their latest available financial statements in order for their applications to be assessed against the criteria.”

The grants range in value from a low of $100 for the Valleyview Community Association to a high of $44,489 for the MacBride Museum Society.

Council is scheduled to vote at its meeting next Monday to direct administration to bring forward the bylaw required to issue the grants.

The organizations and the amounts recommended are as follows:

• Downtown Urban Garden Society – $480;

• Golden Age Society – $5,164;

• Guild Society – $18,429;

• Hospice Yukon Society – $1,948;

• Humane Society Yukon – $6,291

• Kaushee’s Place Housing Society – $13,791

• LDÅY (Learning Disabilities Association Yukon) – $1,240

• Maryhouse – $2,647;

• Whitehorse Legion Branch – $10,016;

• Softball Yukon – $24,947;

• Softball Yukon, Robert Service Way softball diamonds – $741;

• Whitehorse Aboriginal Women’s Circle – $8,945;

• Whitehorse Rifle and Pistol Club – $5,751;

• Yukon Broomball Association – $4,725;

• Yukon Women’s Transition Home Society – $8,615.

The administrative report notes the full amount of taxes owed by the 17 community organizations is $218,140.

Eight community organizations that received grants last year did not apply this year, says the report.

Under the city grant policy, organizations can receive a maximum of $50,000 per year in grants from the city.

Somebody wrote about the sports organizations being elitist structures that exclude people from lower incomes because of their high fees. I'd like to remind everyone that children play softball in this town for free. And that softball Yukon runs weekly fundraising bingos where they share the profits with many other organizations in town by offering them volunteer opportunities. That is the only sport I am aware of, but I bet curling, skiing, judo and many others are made affordable through fundraising activities. Let's not make sweeping judgements without facts to support them.

Fine, fine, these groups are all enjoying their special interests and improving community life.
That's fine but I never asked them to do that and don't expect me to pay for it!

Ya got $$$ to blast away at targets but can't fundraise $500 a month from club members?

Talk about free loaders.

I mention orgs that actually help people in need (transition home, hospice) to which obviously you could add all the orgs you listed. This has got to be the fifth or sixth time I've seen you post something about a comment or article that you clearly didn't (or couldn't?) read. I can't count how many times you've been corrected by people in these comment threads.

@ Get a Hobby - "The city shouldn't fund groups that are essentially just hobbies for middle class people. Those groups should budget property taxes into their expenses just like everyone else.

Notice the biggest asks aren't from orgs that actually help people in need like the Transition Home or Hospice? They're from sports orgs who already have user fees that are high enough to exclude anyone not making at least 60k a year."

You did not mention one organization I did anywhere in your post. You didn't even say support them. This is what i read when I made my counterpoint. Reread yourself.

The City gave more than this to Mount Sima, go rub one out if you are that offended by 150k.

You didn't actually read my comment (as usual). I said that these sports and hobby orgs should figure out their own property taxes, and leave funding for orgs that actually help the community like LDAY etc.

A response to:
“I agree with Juniper, time to be selective on who receives.”
Okay everyone, those who are seeking financial relief should forward their applications to Juniper and Charlie’s Aunt.

We need to straighten this mess out!

Softball has done so much for our community… It has brought together drug dealers and DOJ employees under the watchfully permissive eye of the DOJ. In fact, the WS unwittingly reported on this happy stance with a picture of this intermixed squad - The Young Guns, drug dealers, DOJ employees, an RCMP member with extensive links to the PPSC.

@ Someone probably should subsidize a hobby for you - Mary House, Humane Society, Kaushee's place, Whitehorse Legion Branch, Whitehorse Aboriginal Women’s Circle, LDAY - those are ALL LITERALLY SUPPORT GROUPS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO THIS COMMUNITY. You didn't know that?: You must be YTG.

@ MY OPINION - While I agree with the bulk of what you say, no offense, but did anyone make you close your home business in your house? Probably not, so it isn't the same thing. It's not the ski hill, or Hougen's, it's a bunch of small businesses. I don't know about you, but sometimes I like to shop at more than just Walmart. Anything that helps small business is good for this community, anything else is good for outside investors like Argus. I remember the 80's my friend, my hand me downs were hand me downs. Guess anything I donate will be a hand me down to the power of 10 now.

Juniper - I have no involvement with the organization, but it seems to me that softball Yukon has for years done fundraising through their weekly bingos.

@ Wilf; not sure if it applied to all but not too long ago some groups were forgiven all their property tax, Mae Bachur was one & I agree with Juniper, time to be selective on who receives. We can argue that all not for profits offer some type of worthwhile cause but some are indispensable and needed more than others. Some groups can cover costs by increasing user fees, public may complain, but user pay. Curious to know why Macbride increased their footprint and now want help to pay taxes, I think lesson there is live within your means.

Softball Yukon on Jun 8, 2022 at 12:31 pm

I don't disagree with some of the opposition to Softball Yukon asking for tax relief. But many of their fundraising sources and tournaments couldn't be held during 2020 and 2021 (no Dustball = no concession or beer sales). And their minor softball program is fantastic, not sure how many kids take part but the parks and parking lots are full 4 nights/week. And their adult leagues range from really-skilled to beginner, which means pretty much anyone can take part.

Good on the city for recognizing the importance of these organizations. The employees and volunteers that run these organizations do wonderful things on shoe string budgets.

Many of these groups should be fund raising steadily, instead of sitting on their tookus waiting for tax money. I consider Mae Bacher to be a shelter that is vital to the City. They are fundraising steadily. I have NO problem with the City helping out with the shortfalls they run into.. I consider the Legion and Golden Age to be crucial as well. Softball Yukon wants over 25K. They used to fund raise as well.. Everyone had a dog from their wiener wagon.. So many here that just have a hand out.. I am inclined to refuse that. Show some money for yourself..that you think your group or project is worthwhile. Otherwise it's all just a waste of taxpayer dollars. I'm tired of the 'give me give me's, but not so adverse to help those who just can't quite make it..but really tried.

Why are these organization even taxed in the first place? They are community support organizations for the greater good!

Borrow money you already spent from tax collection, to loan to other companies so they can pay it back in the form of taxes. This is how these people understand finances and economics. Living on borrowed money, wondering why prices go up. To bad the only thing the Yukon makes in excess is A$$ holes and abandoned mines. Neither of which can create a surplus.

Vote Vote Vote. Get rid of the Liberals at all levels of Government. They will or have spent you into the poor house.

If you can’t afford the taxes on a building, you can’t afford the building. End of story. If everyone else is getting taxes back I want some too. Why should I pay for all this largess because I was smart enough to have a house I can afford and support the costs. If they fail let them fail that is how you learn I guess.

Everyone, every business is suffering from this massive inflation brought on by massive amounts of Government stimulus and spending. Giving more money away will only make it worse. Think of your own finances, spending more money will not solve the problem.

If you want to do something about this problem then think how you need to vote. Stop voting for those that offer you the most entitlements. Or you will loose everything, do you remember the late 70’s and early 80’s? No? Ok then listen to those who have and get a second job you will need it.
