City adopts new fees set
Certain homes in the city will now be permitted to put two garbage carts out to the curb come collection day, but it will come with a cost.
Certain homes in the city will now be permitted to put two garbage carts out to the curb come collection day, but it will come with a cost.
The provision will apply only to homes where there are eight or more residents and come at a cost of $200 for the additional garbage cart. The monthly garbage fee is rising from $9 to $20 for those who opt to have the extra cart.
The move is one of a number of changes adopted with city council's third reading of an amended fees and charges bylaw on Oct. 7.
Among other changes:
• A new $25 replacement fee for parking permits for those with disabilities;
• A new $35 fee for commercial accessible parking permits, which allow government or other agencies driving people with accessibility issues to park in the accessible parking stalls;
• Discounted bagged meter rates for construction sites downtown in the central business district for projects extending more than 30 consecutive days.
The fee would remain at $25 per meter each day for 30 days, then drop to $15 per meter each day for a maximum of two meter heads;
• A bagged meter rate specific to funerals downtown, allowing for the first five meters to be free;
• Zoning amendment fees rising to a flat rate of $1,500 from the current $500 amendment fee, $400 for signs advertising the proposed zoning change and a $200 sign deposit;
• Bringing fees in line with those already approved in the traffic bylaw; and
• Removing trailer registration fees, which haven't been active in 20 years.
The changes came forward as part of the work the city is doing to prepare for the 2014 operating budget.

The bagged meter rate for funerals is outrageous, city should be more sensitive as this 'perk' isn't likely to be abused.
