Chief's bail won't be pared

Chief Eddie Skookum of the Little Salmon-Carmacks First Nation was denied a reduction in bail today after his attorney argued he should be treated with diplomatic immunity.

Chief Eddie Skookum of the Little Salmon-Carmacks First Nation was denied a reduction in bail today after his attorney argued he should be treated with diplomatic immunity.

Skookum, 56, was charged with assault and impaired driving in Haines, Alaska last weekend after a 21-year-old woman was assaulted and abandoned, bloody, in the Captain's Choice Hotel parking lot.

Skookum appeared in court in Haines by telephone from Juneau's Lemon Creek correctional facility for today's bail hearing.

Attorney David Mallet requested Skookum's bail be reduced to $2,000 US from $50,000.

He said his client should be treated with diplomatic immunity because he is a leader of a sovereign nation, and he likened the First Nation leader to U.S. President Barack Obama and the king of German-speaking Liechtenstein.

Mallet added that the chief is an extremely responsible person who is a minimal flight risk.

Magistrate John Hutchins ruled against the argument, saying it wasn't clear Skookum was travelling in an official capacity or on a diplomatic mission.

Hutchins called the complaint against Skookum very disturbing, noting a person was severely assaulted, abandoned and found in a parking lot. He said it seems like more than a dispute of passion.

"It looked like a murder scene, there was so much blood in the hotel room,” said Amy Williams, assistant district attorney, referring to a statement made by the investigating officer.

Williams noted that Skookum has a previous firearm conviction from 1983, and two assault convictions in the early 1990s.

The case will be sent to the grand jury, but no date has been set.

Meanwhile, Little Salmon-Carmacks council members held a meeting Wednesday to discuss the situation of their chief, who has held the position since 1996.

Officials have said the First Nation will not be putting up the money for Skookum's bail.

Carmacks resident Karen Gage said today Skookum is a good leader who is always available for those who need him.

"He's a really good chief. He cares about the community, he cares about his people,” she said.

Carmacks Mayor Elaine Wyatt said she couldn't comment on Skookum's position as chief, but she could say

Skookum worked hard at establishing a solid relationship between the First Nation and the municipality.

She said he was an integral part in developing regular joint meetings between the two councils.

"We have had a very co-operative working relationship with the First Nation council in the past four years,” she said.

Hey Yukon Boy, mine got deleted too, I guess for suggesting that certain people should be held accountable equally with others as full members of Canadian society. Not allowed to say that now are we? Yet others can say, "Keep your idiotic comments to yourself, because you are not a member of the LSCFN." Hey! That's racism!

i love the censorship, whitehorse star. some comments are good enough and others are not?

By your logic it might be possible that the victim assaulted herself and bled all over the car. still waiting to find out if hes guilty or not?

It looks like his lawyer is running short on grey matter. Who in their right mind would play the diplomatic immunity card? Only an idiot.

This man is no diplomat. He is a victim of systemic prejudice and damage that normal WASPS would wither and die from. Were a WASP to experience the cultural devastation this man's ancestry and present has, they would be gutter balls for someone's sewer flush....sadly and crudely stated but true.

A realistic approach would be that this individual's cultural heritage was destroyed by white men, his negative environmental influences were created by white men, his behaviours were shaped by white men, BUT, he's not a white man. He has been brainwashed and behaves inappropriately in the whiteman's legal framework for lack of whiteman's upbringing, poor teachings, bad examples, and no leadership. He is a victim who has been acting out, who should be assessed as such, and who should be punted into a program to re-program his behaviour. A sympathetic psychiatric assessment would be the starting point.

And what is that supposed to mean Michael Scott? :

"It has so much going for it: sleaze, sex, booze, police, motels, Indians…all the wonderful things that so fascinate the informed citizen of the world "

Liechtenstein doesn't even have a kink, it's a principality.

I fully support the LSCFN's decision not to post bail. There are many better things they could do with that amount of money and it's nice to see that they understand that.

Diplomatic Immunity? hahaha I think we are all laughing at that one.

I really want to believe this article. It has so much going for it: sleaze, sex, booze, police, motels, Indians...all the wonderful things that so fascinate the informed citizen of the world.

However, "king of Liechtenstein"?

Uh, let's see. The last time I looked, Liechtenstein was a Principality. In point of fact, its present ruler is "Prince Hans-Adam II von und zu Liechtenstein". Und, the language of this gem of a country is Alemannic, which is a form of German but just barely.

Still, all things considered, this is a great defense. However, it does make me eager to know where Mr. Mallet obtained his law degree? Wheaties? Cheerios? Did it come with a iPod?

Enquiring minds want to know these things.
