Lynda Dickson has won a second term as Haa Shaa du Hen (Chief) of the Carcross/Tagish First Nation.

Dickson won Tuesday’s election with 109 votes. She beat the runner-up candidate, Danny Cresswell, by five votes.

The small margin of victory means there will be a recount, the First Nation announced on Thursday afternoon. The date for the recount has not been set.

Dickson was originally sworn in last summer.

That occurred after former chief Andy Carvill was suspended after being accused of sexually harassing a staff member.

After an investigation, Carvill was removed from office. Dickson completed the end of Carvill’s term, which was only 10 months.

Dickson will now serve a full four-year term.

Election results were posted on Tuesday. This election brought one of the highest voter turnouts the First Nation has seen, with 336 votes cast.

A swearing-in ceremony will take place Friday afternoon at the gazebo near the main administration building in Carcross.

Robert Wally took 38 votes, Geraldine James 32, George Shepherd 19, Peggy Dubeau 16 and Jerry James 14 votes.
