Chief Kristina Kane of the Ta’an Kwach’an Council was re-elected Monday to a third consecutive three-year term.

Kane received 123 votes, or 55 per cent of the 223 ballots cast in the election for chief and deputy chief. She was unavailable for comment on her victory before press time this afternoon.

It was a four-way race for leader of the Lake Laberge-area First Nation.

Amanda Leas received 55 votes. John S. Bunbury received 32 and Tiffany Eckert-Maret drew nine.

There were three spoiled ballots.

In the two-way race for deputy chief, Christina Peters was elected to her first term with 119 votes or 53 per cent of the ballots cast compared to 103 votes for Delilah Pillai. There was one spoiled ballot.

The Ta’an Kwach’an does not have an elected council. Rather, representation on the council is determined by family groups.

The 223 voters who cast ballots represented a 56-per-cent turnout of the 397 eligible voters.
