ALL ABOARD! – Those willing to replenish the yukon Party’s coffers with $300 apiece are welcome to join Premier Darrell Pasloski and several ministers for a dinner cruise next month. Sandy Silver, right.

Charm offensive could snare $45,000 for Yukon Party

The premier and three government ministers are planning to take part in a Yukon Party fund-raiser aboard a luxury yacht while on a taxpayer-funded trip to Vancouver, the Star has learned.

The premier and three government ministers are planning to take part in a Yukon Party fund-raiser aboard a luxury yacht while on a taxpayer-funded trip to Vancouver, the Star has learned.

The “scenic cruise” slated for Jan. 25 recalls last January’s floating meet-and-greet.

Both cost passengers $300 a plate for an “opportunity to connect with Premier Darrell Pasloski” and ministers Scott Kent, Currie Dixon, and — this year — Wade Istchenko, according to the invitation.

The “Yukon Party ‘Party’” is scheduled for the Sunday evening before the annual Mining Roundup conference, a four-day event hosted by B.C.’s Association of Mineral Exploration.

The evening cruise around Burrard Inlet will include a dinner, live music and live auction, the invitation states.

The Magic Charm yacht has seating for 150 diners. At $300 a head, that adds up to $45,000 in Yukon Party accounts.

“Here we go again,” Liberal Leader Sandy Silver said an interview this morning. “The next round is coming, and they’re doing the same thing.

“Do you guys really think this is a good use of your time when you’re supposed to be at ... promoting the industry as opposed to promoting your political party?” he asked.

“You wonder how their methodology in these important factors is affecting their engagement with industry and trying to drum up investment as opposed to money for the coffers of their election campaign.”

A government spokesperson said the four cabinet members were headed south “to promote Yukon’s strong mineral exploration potential to investors and to support the mining and exploration industry which already operates here and provides so many benefits to Yukon’s economy and Yukon families.

“All parties raise money. Party politics is the basis of our democracy in Canada,” said Elaine Schiman.

Pat McInroy, the president of the Yukon Party, sees nothing “below board” in the affair.

The charter cruise is not paid for by taxpayers, and takes place the Sunday before the conference begins, he pointed out today.

“The MLAs and ministers that will be attending that are going down for the roundup, their per diems and allowances do not start until Monday,” he told the Star.

“They won’t be charging the taxpayer anything.”

McInroy acknowledged the flight to and from Vancouver was on the public dime.

“It’s a nice social event to get together, talk and share some ideas,” he added.

Magic Yacht Charters charges $6,500 for a four-hour voyage, including food and beverage service, plus a $50-per-hour fuel surcharge.

The fund-raiser is scheduled to run from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

For the upcoming fund-raiser, the word “exclusive” was deleted from the phrase, “an opportunity to meet Premier Darrell Pasloski,” which the last invitation included.

Silver fired his opening shot in the legislature’s spring sitting this year using ammunition from the fund-raiser two months earlier.

“Our exploration industry is in a tailspin. The premier and his ministers were supposed to be spending their time trying to reverse this trend,” he told the house on March 25.

He added that the government appeared to be selling access unavailable to many constituents.

McInroy said today of the guests: “It was a pretty broad spectrum last time, it’s not just mining companies ... but many people that have a stake in the Yukon.”

The event is organized by the Yukon Party, not the government. The party invited the cabinet members to attend, the government stated.

Kent is the minister of Energy, Mines and Resources.

Dixon serves as the minister of both Economic Development and the Environment.

Istchenko is the Highways and Public Works minister.

The annual Mineral Roundup is the mining association’s “flagship event,” with dozens of speakers, technical sessions and discussion forums.

@Just Say'in
If you really were here in '82 then you should be able to remember that the slump in the Yukon economy was due to depressed metal prices world wide, not because of any Yukon politics. Then again, perhaps you have selective memory to further a partisan agenda.

courting the mining companies for all the wrong reasons on Dec 14, 2014 at 8:18 pm

So there are Yukon Party people who believe the Yukon Party should court the mining companies for money to pay for the Yukon Party. So the mining companies finance the Yukon Party in helping them to win the next election.

I hope I am able to be in a few of the Government Departments when the layoff notices go out to all the people who deal directly or indirectly with Mining and exploration in the Yukon.
Walk into these departments like Mining recorders, Mine Rescue, YESEB, Water Board, Wildlife, Environment Yukon, WCB, Fisheries, Lets not forget the Courts. Simply put, we will not need any of them. The way I see it I have been through this before in 82 and I think I will be able to buy some houses cheap again. Watch what you wish for. Funny how some never learn and history repeats itself. But "Hey" we can just get a nice Yukon Housing shack and go Cross Country Skiing. "Right"?

The Yukon economy must be in great shape if Sandy Silver's biggest outrage is once again the "Cruise"
There is a lot of ignorance on this thread on the nature of party politics and the necessity of fundraising by all parties.

Personally, tying a fundraiser to an event everyone is already down in Vancouver for seems like a reasonable way to connect with the people who can help our economy. But I understand some will disagree.

Hopefully the other parties are looking for ways kick start the economy instead of just pouting about a party.

Has anyone commenting being at round up and understand how it works on Dec 11, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Round up is an opportunity to meet people from the mining industry and investors to start a relationships for investment in the Yukon. The present leader of the Yukon Party has decided to use round up so the Yukon Party can raise money for funding and help them win elections. The mining companies as they have stated to me don't want to pick parties in the Yukon but just do business and contribute to the Yukon economy and its peoples life style and our investors success. People of the Yukon you have no idea how bad our government is managed.

Who owns the Yukon Gov't.
I would like to see a big tote board that tallies the amount of outside money that flows into the Yukon in support of the age old argument conservation or development. Sierra Club, Greenpeace and a number of smaller ‘save the planet’ groups provide money to slant the political outcomes of a number of issues and projects separate to a general election, perhaps they will begin to support green party ideologies and party positions more in future general elections, as they don’t appear to be running out of money anytime soon.

Last spring this paper printed a story on the levels of funding that flow to the anti-development groups to thwart development and slow the Yukon economy. It was a good read: http://whitehorsestar.com/News/researcher-probes-environmental-groups-funding

At least the Yukon Party raises their own funds and does not rely on the socialist labor unions to hand over money that belongs to their membership, and no we are not consulted. I suspect that the local lawyer community still supports the Liberals as in days past.

Who Owns the Yukon Gov't on Dec 11, 2014 at 3:38 pm

So the mining companies have bought the Yukon Government Yukon Party. So when do we the tax payers get our share of the money the Yukon Party will get to try to pay for Yukoners' votes. Do Yukoners want mining companies to own one of the Yukon Parties? Hands up. If the mining companies own the Yukon Party than who controls them? Does the Yukon Party represent the Yukon or mining companies if they are going to supply the Yukon Party $45,000 which they did last year.

If they are flying down early to party then they should have to pay half the fair to cover that cost!! I find it ridiculous when conservatives say they are more fiscally responsible then the other parties and then do this and their party faithful are so gullible to say YP is paying all the expenses. Really are you that asinine to support this as a tax payer period?

The Yukon Party convened a recent meeting and decided to proceed with this fund raising cruise and deal head on with the many recent issues the press is bringing forward.

The MVGC bailout will be sold as the actions of a former minister but they will say Minister Lang had a "social license" to provide assistance to a valued recreation facility. They know members of this club will support them. Party insiders will write comments to the newpapers articles and give the thumbs down to valid posts (this is already happening). The YP will spar with the opposition in the house on this issue and actually make fun of their indignation.

The YESAA amendments will be left to parlimentary process in the hope that Yukon First Nations will give up or vent their frustration on the federal minister of Aboriginal Affairs who is a very convenient scapegoat.

The Peel court case is another matter; government policy analysts and lawyers are still looking at a number of options and preparing briefing notes. There is a good chance the Yukon Party will use taxpayers dollars to challenge Veale's decision to provide what they will call "legal certainty" on this matter. It may be a little too soon for a Peel supporters to celebrate a victory.

Sandy Silver, the lone Liberal member and the NDP are up against a very tough crowd.

Sandy Silver is still whining for not being invited? If he was invited last year, he would have seen the cruise was attended by every major mining executive and stakeholder which made it the cream social event at Round Up and ideal for promoting mining in the Yukon.

Maybe Sandy can share his fundraising activities?

... Dear Premier and cohorts ... are you really that tone deaf?
Have you taken nothing away from the controversies you have found yourselves in lately? Are you so hell bent on destroying any chance of re-election?
... or are you and your wunderkiddies looking for the next job to cushion the fall from grace you seem to destined to have.

We have faith in the democratic system; but faith in the people that have raised their hands to uphold it can be very fragile ... don't let us, your families and more importantly yourself - down by these thoughtless actions.
...or do you simply hold all of us in that much contempt?

As someone said in the last few days, when the ride is over you still have to live here. What do you want your legacy to be, without your good name and reputation you have nothing.

The mining industry is very concerned about the Yukon Party's failed and controversial relationship with Yukon First Nations, the fumbling of the Peel court case, and the underhanded way in which the four YESAA amendments were tabled.

This cruise may have many empty seats and may not be much of a money maker. The one way the Yukon Party can entice the industy is generous government grants for exploration work and that is what the boat guests may be lobbying for. Hopefully the grant money will not be hidden like the funding to the golf course.

Tater, just remember, mining is not some sort of grand, philanthropic gesture. Mining companies are here to make money. Period. For their investors. Period.
They are not here to provide jobs for Yukoners. They are not here to fill our coffers with royalties. They will come here if it makes financial sense, and that's the bottom line. We don't need to court them.
Now with respect to the YPers having a party, more power to them. They can fund raise however they want. Heck, I got an invite, even though I didn't renew my YP membership this year. What I do have a problem with are these people getting a taxpayer funded trip to the party. When YG employees are on trips outside for work, your time is your own after work hours, BUT, to organize an event to take advantage of a free trip outside is just plain wrong. This is the sort of behaviour us fiscal conservatives rail against. But the YPers are not fiscal conservatives. I don't know what we could call them. Let's party!

Nothing new. They did the exact same thing last year. It was thoroughly discussed in the public domain and debated in the legislature. The opposition is beginning to sound like a broken record on this topic. Even MLAs and ministers have work hours. What they do outside of their work hours is their own business provided that it is ethical and legal. There is nothing unethical or illegal about making themselves available to valued stakeholders and party faithful. The expenses of the availability are coming directly out of Yukon Party coffers.

This time around, Pasloski and crew will have some explaining to do to their corporate masters.
Their failure to open the Peel and change YESAA will not sit well with those who are paying top dollar and expecting results. What new attempt to hijack the territory's resources will be hatched on this boat ride.....

Now that's the life! Free round trip to Vancouver, a nice luxurious cruise and maybe plan your summer golfing at the Yukon Party Golf Club which is funded by Yukoners. Man, it sure pays to be friends with the Old Boys and Girls!

Don't waste your money, they won't be in power to pay you back. More scum baggery by the Yukon Party.
Is anyone surprised that Elaine Schiman and the party that slips $750,000 to the golf club do not see this 'nice social event' ($300 to 'share ideas' with Yukon Party ministers), as a problem?

Haul the nets in while you can YP, methinks there's a dry spell coming up for you in the near future which might last a while.

Well at least someone is courting Mining companies, because the Liberals and NDP sure aren't.
