Two teenagers have been arrested and are facing charges linked to a fire that destroyed the free store at the Marsh Lake dump on New Year's Eve.

The free store was one of three structures built by the Marsh Lake Solid Waste Management Society in a barn-raising volunteer (with the exception of one professional carpenter) event last October. That occurred after a fire the previous March destroyed two of the main buildings at the site.

While last year's fire was deemed inconclusive by RCMP, police said this morning they arrested two people in relation to the New Year's Eve blaze on Tuesday.

'It's been a real kick in the gut to have his happen,' Gloria Johnson, president of the Marsh Lake Solid Waste Management Society, said after the most recent fire.

Windows were also smashed and the door kicked in to the business office, where everything in the desk and filing cabinet was removed and thrown around. The chimney for the wood stove was also dented.

The loss of the building was estimated at between $4,000 and $5,000, not including the labour that went into the construction.

After police were called to the scene on Jan. 1, they sought the public's help in the case.

'Thanks to the public's assistance and valuable information, police were able to successfully conclude this investigation. This is yet another example of how citizens can play a key role in helping the RCMP get criminals off the street and ensure our communities and neighbourhoods are safe again,' an RCMP media release states, before thanking citizens for their co-operation.

Whitehorse resident Nicholas Kent Coldwell, 19, and a 17-year-old, also of Whitehorse who can't be identified under the federal Youth Criminal Justice Act, are each charged with arson as well as break and enter.

Both have been released from custody, with their next court date set for March.
