Some services at the Canada Games Centre reopened Monday but with several restrictions to ensure physical distancing is maintained.

The middle lane of the running and walking track, for instance, is reserved for passing while one lane is open for walkers and one for runners, Krista Mroz, the city’s manager of recreation and facilities, explained in an interview Monday afternoon.

Mroz said the fitness centre and the flexi-hall also opened.

The swimming pool and ice rinks will remain closed, she said, but it’s expected they’ll open in the next phase.

Mroz said they are currently working on an operational plan for phase two that they hope to have into the office of the chief medical officer of health by the end of the month for review and approval.

They also started up three day camps Monday with a maximum of 24 kids per camp, and they’ve broken each camp into smaller groups of eight, she said.

One camp is being run in the indoor soccer field at the Games Centre.

Another is being run out of the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre and a third is being run on the dry ice service at the Takhini Arena.

All three of the day camps are maximizing outdoor activities when the weather allows.

Mroz said people using the facilities will be met by greeters who will explain the operational conditions, and requirements.

Somebody shooting hoops on the basketball court, for instance, will have to do just that as no games or contact sports are allowed, in keeping with the Yukon government’s direction of a couple of weeks ago. she explained.

She said staff will be handing out equipment like basketballs but when the equipment is returned it will be placed in a bin and sanitized before they’re handed out again.

For the fitness centre, greeters will provide people who want to work out with sanitizer and ask them to wipe down the exercise equipment before and after use.

Staff will also be monitoring activities in the centre and will assist with sanitizing equipment, she said.

Mroz said the number of exercise machines has been reduced, and they have been spread out to ensure social distancing is adhered to.

The centre will be limited to a maximum of 30 people, though that should not be an issue as the summer months are generally much slower than the winter months, she said.

Mroz said during the peak times in the winter – lunch time and after work – there can be up to 40 people using the fitness centre at one time.

In the summer, however, peak periods normal see 10 to 12 people working out at one time, she said.

The CGC is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

Max Mack possible the ice surface remains closed because this would be a good time for seasonal maintenance, or because all the user groups cancelled their programs and so budgeted revenue would not be there to offset operating costs. Wouldn't it be helpful if Star reporters asked questions instead of copying and pasting what they are handed?

My understanding is that for fewer options at CGC you still pay the regular price.

"ice rinks will remain closed".
Why? Skaters are more likely to have covid than runners and walkers?

Ridiculous.
