Two teenagers who lost their way while hiking in the woods late Tuesday night were found after an overnight search that lasted for more than four hours.
A 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old female were hiking in the forest around Mary Lake and Wolf Creek.
At 11:39 p.m., the young man phoned Whitehorse RCMP from his cell phone to say they were lost.
After hours of unsuccessfully trying to find their way out of the bush, he told police, he and his friend couldn't find their way back.
The overnight search by the RCMP and Whitehorse Search and Rescue lasted until 4:40 this morning, when the two youth were found four kilometres away from their vehicle.
The youth were found after Search and Rescue had mapped out a likely area in which they could be found.
RCMP Cpl. Stephen Alexander said Search and Rescue use information like the position of the vehicle, how long the youth had been walking, and their geographic descriptions of their surroundings to find their likely location.
After they were found, police brought the youth out of the woods in all-terrain vehicles.
They had no injuries and are reported to be in good health.
The names of the lost teens are not being released by police.
While the youth were fortunate to have a cell phone with them, police warn that they should not be relied on, as phone service does not always work outside of the city.
They recommend notifying people before going into the bush.
