Environment Yukon conservation officers were using trained dogs this morning and early this afternoon to guide a family of grizzly bears away from Hamilton Boulevard.

A grizzly sow and cubs were spotted at about 9:15 a.m. near Bigway Foods, located between the Granger and Copper Ridge neighbourhoods.

Through its Twitter account, the department was updating residents on the whereabouts of the grizzlies in Whitehorse.

“They have responded to the dogs and (conservation officers) continue to try and move them,” the tweet read.

As of noon today, the bears were in an area behind North Star Drive, near a gully, said Kris Gustafson, the government’s director of conservation officer services.

“These bears have been shepherded before,” Gustafson said. “They responded well to human voices.”

The Karelian Bear Dogs the officers are using to steer the bear family away from the residential area had previously been in Carcross.

In that community, their corralling skills were tested in the Choutla subdivision where two bear families had been repeatedly feeding on soapberries.

It is an anomaly, Gustafson said, that the B.C. and Alberta contractors with the dogs were in town to help out today.

“They’re getting put to use one more time,” Environment spokesperson Eric Clement said this morning.

As part of the department’s “aversive conditioning” program, the officers were attempting to discourage two bear families from staying in the Carcross neighbourhood.

Aversive conditioning involves the use of something unpleasant– bear-bangers, lights, trained dogs and/or rubber bullets and paintballs – to stop unwanted behaviour.

Josey - as a Scot , you may well have a few things to say about us English, but (based on this year's referendum) not enough to devolve from the Union eh? Admit it , you really kinda like us . (Did I say kinda, I meant kind of ) .

It amazes me that a Grizzly in Whitehorse can make the news for 3 days and make the paper. Last year in Watson Lake a bear climbed through a kitchen window and into a older couples home. My co worker has had one bear shot in her driveway (she has 3 children) and one trapped at the top of her drive way. She lives right on Watson Lake not far from town...... none of that made the paper, you know why because we live in the Yukon, you know Bear country!!

Hey Englishman...you may have a point. There is an off chance that the "Galapagos effect" has infected my grey matter. By that I mean after years of google and other "auto" correct programs...clearly I forgot which was which...and that pisses me off. Really it does, and it is infectious this aspect of culture loss.

But now that you pointed out all the awesome things "the English" have brought us...ever hear of land claims?
The English is what screwed up virtually every place it went...not "whitey"...but the English.
WofB seems my loss of how truly unique we are as Canadians...blessed with the greatness of having England's influence in our life each day.
I retract my correction of your post, the rest stays.
Gotta go..get a side order of bacon...for the eggs stuck to my face.
...how was that?
Oh yeah..I"m a Scot, we too have a few things to say about the "English"

Josey - the correct spelling is 'odour'. WofB was correct. You are wrong. Man up and admit it. Then understand the detail of linguistics that most Grade 8 English students have mastered. ( PS - The English language was originated in England, not the USA. You will find that we English have added colour to the language over the centuries, not color ).

WofB...good shot, but ya missed.
My "rant" was all inclusive, NCR's are anyone with a good lawyer and a sad tale of woe. My comment on Gladue stands too, as I wish not to discriminate.. and forget that we do VERY, VERY much in FACT have multi-tiered justice and on the books (factual) race based laws/exception.
CCC section 718.2(e)...read it, not my opinion...facts...how I fly.

Given what has happened to what I used to call Canada since 1982, I and us all out there have been "awarded" your proclaimed "Josey, you deserve the Odour of Canada".
...As the stench of Canada's decomposition is out there for all to breathe.
So as stated by you WofB, that odor (spelling corrected) of Canada, I got it already waaaaaaaaay back in 1982...as did you and everyone else out here.
Certainly not anything we wished for, but pandering to the ethnic vote and perpetuating the victim cycle?
Justine's daddy did it the best, thank him for the "odour of Canada"
...the stink is from him and his minions...you one WofB?
Want more stench/stupid? Vote for his son, he'll give us more of it as per the mantra.

Can we use those dogs to keep the humans who act as apex predators among us socialized..and civilized humans?
I'd rather have bears in town than the CHRONIC walking NCR's and Gladue kangaroos we are...as they say..over represented with.
Actually for a sustainable organic solution we should encourage their roaming downtown, bears eat garbage...we have lot of it in town these days.
