The Yukon’s MP says he was sad to see Tuesday’s expulsions of two one-time cabinet ministers from the Liberal party caucus.
The Yukon’s MP says he was sad to see Tuesday’s expulsions of two one-time cabinet ministers from the Liberal party caucus.
However, the vast majority of the group had lost confidence in ex-ministers Jody Wilson-Raybould and Jane Philpott, and the deed had to be done, Larry Bagnell told the Star this morning from Ottawa.
“We’re all very sad; we lost two good colleagues, two very effective ministers,” Bagnell said.
But issues surrounding his Liberal government in the SNC-Lavalin affair have dogged the party for the last seven weeks, to an extent that it began taking a toll on the trust level among members of Parliament, he said.
“People are so distanced from Ottawa, they think government doesn’t work,” Bagnell said.
“The reason it works is because of these Wednesday morning caucus meetings,” where MPs can voice their concerns to ministers and the prime minister about a range of issues.
“Because it’s in confidence, you can trust everyone and you can really rant and make a strong case for things where you disagree with what the PM or minister is doing,” said Bagnell.
That level of trust, by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s own admission Tuesday, had eroded after Wilson-Raybould, the one-time attorney general and Justice minister, shared a secretly-recorded phone call with Michael Wernick, then the Clerk of the Privy Council.
On Dec. 19, 2018, they discussed allegations of political interference in the criminal case of SNC-Lavalin.
“The only way that works is if you have confidence in everyone in the room,” Bagnell said of the caucus meeting process that plays out on Wednesdays.
“And not (result in) a big debate or fight in public or controversial (event) that makes it impossible to move forward on issues.”
Bagnell was asked directly if he had lost that confidence himself. He said he would have continued his work representing the territory under any circumstances.
“I was a bit concerned when I heard about a telephone conversation being secretly taped though,” he said.
As of this morning, he had not fully listened to the 17-minute conversation, suggesting that the controversy was distracting him from other work.
“I was trying to keep up with all the things going on and I was getting behind in all my regular work,” he said. “I had to get back to that.
“I admired those women from the beginning because they believe in Liberal values and things like moving forward on climate change, on reconciliation, on a number of things,” Bagnell said.
The MP was also happy to see the pair’s intention to run again for their constituents – though they are barred from running as Liberals.
As for the party’s (and his) re-election chances this fall, Bagnell shied away from stating one way or another how he felt. “I’m just carrying on ... I just continue to do the job as best I can,” he said.
Pressed, Bagnell added that he never speculates, but “as they say, a week is an eternity in politics.
“I’m convinced that things we’ve been trying to work on the past four years ... those are things that affect people in their day-to-day lives.”
Among those accomplishments and continued focus, he said, are creation and defending jobs.
“Nothing can be worse than not having a job to feed your family,” he said. “Those are things we’re working on, and we’re proud to be able to put those before the electorate.”

The Liberals are still the best choice and I support Larry.
There could be a minority government aided by the NDP which is not a bad thing.
There have been many scandals before and I hope JT and his team puts this one behind them.

Larry you know full well Quebec construction industry has been tainted since the Montreal Olympics and probably before this. Corruption and pork barelling exists in all jurisdictions, but SNC needs to be legally punished...not just a fine but no more government contracts for 5 years. Let someone new in the door! She was loyal to the rule of law. JT should have said "I was wrong, I'm sorry, and I'm glad that we have strong members in the liberal party who are willing to act as a check. This shows that liberals are capable of self criticism and dealing with opposing views within the party constructively."
Instead, "You're fired"

JWR said nothing done was illegal but there was pressure because JT wanted to exhaust all legal means to protect job.
JWR should have put her concerns in writing.
And now we find the person heading the public prosecution of SNC had kept was reviewing additional info from SNC so she was saying no when there was still a possibility of a remediation agreement.

@ CJ How can you say this is an HR thing? This is about intervening in the judicial system aka corruption. Open your eyes. Trudeau has betrayed all Canadians since getting elected. None of what he said to get elected has come true except the debt he promised the country. He is selling out this country; he is making a mess of this country; he has to go asap. Not to suggest Scheer is a better alternative, but Trudeau has to go. October can't come soon enough.

I can't even make it through these comments. But I will say I have been absolutely addicted to this SCN Lavelin story and it seems pretty obvious to me that it's an issue that belonged in human resources. And we in the Yukon should be well used to people feeling entitled to act out their grievances. Just last fall that guy secretly recorded his co-workers and then went to court trying to get his job back. I suppose opinion was divided on these comment pages, as usual, but the judge wasn't impressed.
But today I was thinking of Pat Duncan's Liberal government, where a couple of MLAs managed to turn her majority into a minority, over who can remember what. I thought at the time and still do (even though I didn't vote Liberal territorially), how can you justify squandering the majority you worked so hard for? And these two women were trying to do their darndest to do just that. Such a waste. The Liberal caucus has been very professional, in the face of some relentless scrutiny.
I happen to believe Trudeau, and though people are super hard on him right now, he has made some pretty good points all the way through, ones that I agree with.
The one thing that would have made me not vote for Liberals in the fall is if Trudeau let those women stay. So congratulations, Larry, and I hope the government can get back to work.

Dear Whitehorse Star, you have to do something about your thumbs up or down voting system. There is no way that there are 100 neo cons in the Yukon? The root of the problem belongs to one person and one person only - Trudeau!
Loyalty does extend itself to corruption. By staying with the new status quo in Caucus everyone of the current members are condoning what has occurred - that makes each of you, including you Larry, complicit. Think on that Larry. Personally I would not believe Trudeau if his tongue came notarized !

The only issue that matters the most is Trudeau, Michael Wernick and Gerald Butts LIED and they were found out. End of story! Without the tape we would never have known to what extent the lies were. All the other issues brought forward are a bunch of smoke and mirrors to distract from the real issue.
The party is blaming Jody and Jane to try and make them look bad but in fact every time Trudeau or anyone from his party opens their mouth to try and defend him they make complete fool of themselves. I cannot believe that Liberals are defending him, he is a LIAR. A real leader would have owned up to his mess, apologized and moved on. Instead they are so vindictive they are trying to shift the blame. Most of the voting public will see past the BS and do the right thing come election day.

@Wes: Nothing illegal eh? As I understand it the Conservatives passed a bill making this very type of political interference illegal while they were in power last time. In fact according to news reports the issue of that particular law was one of the things raised in these phone conversations as a red flag by Jody Wilson-Raybold and supposedly the matter was minimized by the person on the other end of the line 'since it was a law passed by the Conservatives'. Raybold basically responded while that may be the case it is now the law of the country and the current government is bound by it. Unfortunately the Liberal machine is apparently so arrogant that they think they can pick and chose which laws they will abide by.

Breach of Trust on Apr 4, 2019 at 11:45 am
From everything I have read, this story has nothing to do with SNC Lavalin and more about trust. In the beginning, I belived Raybould but the more I have heard, I now have questions. Why did she not bring up her concerns in the caucus instead of the public forum first? Why did she record a conversation without the other parties knowledge? To me, this is a breach of trust with her colleagues. I think there was no choice but to remove her from caucus as no one could feel safe talking about any issues in her presence without fear that she would leak this information to the press. I know I would not trust her.
To me this is sounding like a woman who did not get her way (and I am a woman). If this was a White Man instead of a First Nations Woman, would this have been a big issue? There are cabinet shuffles all the time but you don't hear those cabinet members going public to say they moved me because they did not like my decision. She chose to enter the world of Politics, and politicians are always pressured to make decisions that favor one group or another. She stuck to her decision. Good for her but to go public and make a scandal for her party and secretly record phone conversations is a breach of trust.

Oh and by the way Larry, tell me how this works? If I pay a carbon tax it is supposed to change my behaviour by virtue of the increased cost. However the Liberals say we will get it all back. So how does that achieve the goal?
In fact all businesses will not get it back, nor their suppliers or shippers. In fact no one in the chain. Layers and Layers of tax paid will have to be passed on to the consumers. This will cause inflation like we haven't seen since the late 70's when another Trudope was in charge. History repeats itself.

Good comments and perspective Larry, Yes, they had to go and it should have been sooner.
Jody Wilson-Raybould is very good at writing letters and when she thought the line was being crossed she should have written something that was distributed to all caucus members. This would have ended it or she would have met one on one with JT to sort it out.
I do not fault JWR for recording Michael Wernick and it was very clear he had crossed the line. For one thing he should not be partisan and he kept coming back to the issue of making a remediation agreement. This scandal shows an immaturity in the Liberal Party and it has hurt the image and brand of Justin Trudeau.
The real question is if JT can show he is still the best choice for Canadians. I personally would like to see him fighting rather than saying things that do not mean much. JWR did say no laws were broken so JT should say they crossed the line because there was a lot at stake.
But it's time to move on for everyone.

There were high hopes for Trudeau, after all, Harper was in for 12 years. Perhaps time for a change.. We got change ok, but nothing anyone wanted. We got a PM wanna be, (Trudeau is not now, and will never be MY Prime Minister) that picked up 5 charges from the ethics commissioner for bribery and narrowly avoided a charge for graft on his Pay for Access scheme. (He released 10 million dollars to the terrorist Khadr on July 4.. much the same way he snubbed Canadians by enforcing the carbon tax on April Fools day) he has divided the country every way it could be divided, income, race, religion, education, philosophical belief.
The Supreme Court ruled that current legislation was not adequate... He has made enemies of every country in the world except France and Germany, and France isn't liking him too much these days either.. He has dropped the ball on trade and run the country 1.3 trillion dollars in debt Federally and Provincially. What I don't understand is the 179 men and women in caucus that encourage his madness. They should have called a vote of non confidence a year ago. Is it because Trudeau gave them through legislation hefty pay increases? Is it because he passed legislation exempting MPs from prosecution "Parliamentary immunity, also known as legislative immunity, is a system in which members of the parliament or legislature are granted partial immunity from prosecution. Before prosecuting, it is necessary that the immunity be removed, usually by a superior court of justice or by the parliament itself. This reduces the possibility of pressing a member of the parliament to change his or her vote by fear of prosecution." Did they sell their souls?

Larry, here is something you may want to consider
SNC- Lavalin Scandal.
-Highest Spending PM outside of war and recession. Gave 18.6 billion of Canadian money to other countries.
-Imposes a carbon tax and climate changes policies that chases investors out of Canada.
-Adds GST to the carbon tax, that’s a tax on a tax.
-He Pledged $840 million to Syria Humanitarian Assistance when half the native reserves don’t have clean drinking water.
-Veterans are asking for too much but gives millions away to other countries.
-Says Terrorists deserve to keep their Canadian citizenship.
-Billions added to the national debt.
-Says the budget will balance itself by 2019. It did not, new predictions say 2040.
-Says if we kill our enemies they win.
-Says Canada has no core identity.
-Says “diversity is our greatest strength” but his divisiveness tears us apart.
-Spent over $1.5 million on the trip to India that did nothing but worsen ties.
-Paid $17,000 to bring Vikram Vij a chef from Vancouver to prepare a meal for a meeting in New Delhi.
-Can’t get a trade deal done with anyone.
-Couldn’t negotiate nafta.
-Can’t get a pipeline done in any direction.
-Withholds documents regarding interference in government contracts.
-Replaces Canada’s old F-18s with Australia’s old F-18s.
-Imposes tough regulations and taxes on oil from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland but not oil from Saudi Arabia.
-Every new project has to undergo strict environmental assessments...except cement plants in Quebec.
-Chases foreign companies (and their investment capital) out of the country like they have the plague.
- Changes made in our national anthem.
-Illegal migrants are just “irregular border crossers”.
-Pays $10.5 million to a CONVICTED terrorist in a backroom deal who murdered an unarmed army medic.
-Gave away another 30 million to 3 other terrorist.
-Forgot Alberta was a province.
-Called small business owners “tax cheats”.
-Screws up our trade relations with our most important trade partner because he failed to stop Chinese steel from flowing through to the states and he won’t give up supply management which hurts Canadian consumers.
-$8 million for a skating rink.
-$4.5 billion for a 65 year old pipeline (and KM uses that money to build a pipeline in Texas). Was told by experts it’s not wise to buy the KM pipeline but he bought it anyway.
-Thinks Canada is 100 years old instead of 150.
-Generally making life less affordable for the average Canadian.
-Gave $20 million of Canadian taxpayer’s money to the Clinton Foundation.
-Gave millions of Canadian taxpayer’s money to Hamas.
-Introduces a law that would make calling someone by the wrong gender pronoun a criminal offence.
-Outrage over fake racist attacks, says nothing about real terrorist attacks and won’t acknowledge Terrorist attacks.
-The only sitting PM ever to be convicted of ethics violations.
-Thanked a protester about Mercury in First Nations water for their donation to the Liberal fund raiser while they are being escorted out.

Face it, Trudeau and his cronies tried to illegally interfere with the justice process and with the department of justice and got caught red handed. He has then compounded the problem and really dug himself a hole by expelling these two ministers, especially Jody Wilson-Raybold who actually seems to be an honest person who did the right thing and warned him to keep his mitts off the legal process regarding SNC Lavelin.
The Trudeau Liberals are only upset about her recorded phone call because it exposed how these arrogant rats operate behind the scenes. Of course Bagnell supports Trudeau on this because Bagnell has always been a lap dog for the party, he knows where his bread is buttered and obediently falls in line whether it’s the federal gun registry or the selling out of these two women who stood up for the right thing.
I can’t wait to see the last of Trudeau, the Liberals, and Larry Bagnell as MP this coming fall. The really ironic thing is that Trudeau portrayed himself as a feminist and the women’s choice for leader and in reality it was all act and voters bought it hook, line, and sinker in 2015.

How can anyone work with a person as a boss that you don't have confidence in? Trudeau did not tell Canadians the truth: such as the deficit, immigrants, supporting housing in the Yukon over the last four years, infrastructure investment, joint ventures with business using 3P's, taking away deductions from kids in university. Taxing of students should not permitted when they work in the summer. Carbon tax system that does not work, rebate program in Yukon will not work. Middle class have not seen their take home pay go up, in fact a family of four will pay over $2000 more in taxes. A false statement about the ministers trust when Trudeau can't be trusted, I know people who works for SNC-L and losing 9000 jobs is not true at all. Larry Yukoners are not understanding how you can support this and so many other bad things Trudeau is doing and you do not stand up for Yukon. Resource sector is very concerned about Canada and billions of investment is leaving every day
