Cathers would strive for a stronger, more diversified economy

If he’s elected premier, a Brad Cathers-led government would work with the private sector to create the conditions for success that would support economic revival and the growth of a stronger, more diversified local economy.

If he’s elected premier, a Brad Cathers-led government would work with the private sector to create the conditions for success that would support economic revival and the growth of a stronger, more diversified local economy.

The MLA for Lake Laberge is a candidate for the leadership of the Yukon Party, to be decided May 23.

“The recent disruptions to our supply chains are serving as a wake-up call to Canadians,” Cathers said last Thursday.

“It is time to increase local production of food, local manufacturing, and local supply of goods we depend on in our daily lives.

“The economic impacts of the pandemic are already serious, and we have not seen the full effects yet,” added Cathers.

“We need to work together to support economic revival of our private sector, and take the right steps to create the conditions for a decade of opportunity for Yukon businesses.”

He said his vision for the Yukon includes “increasing our ability to be self-sufficient, and meet our own needs,” said Cathers.

“In addition to growing our agricultural sector, we have the potential to produce more goods locally, make it easier to build log homes, grow our knowledge economy, and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for heating by using biomass as an alternative.”

As part of supporting development of the Yukon Grown and Yukon Made sectors, Cathers is committed to working with the business community on actionsm including:

• implement a Yukonmade tax credit to encourage local manufacturing and production of goods, including food, log homes, wood pellets and chips, furniture, clothing, and traditional and cultural products;

• reduce the wildfire risk by working with First Nation and municipal governments, local advisory councils, the Yukon Wood Products Association, local businesses, First Nation development corporations, FireSmart Whitehorse, and other stakeholders to do targeted cutting in and near communities and make use of the raw material;

• expand the use of biomass and wood for government, commercial, and home heating purposes to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels;

• develop a tax credit to encourage construction of log homes built using Yukon timber;

• support northern research including cold climate innovation, improving agricultural production, and recognizing habitat enhancement due to excellence in placer mining reclamation; and

• reduce the regulatory burden and paperwork for Yukon companies, especially small businesses, after working with the business community to set priorities.

Former cabinet minister Currie Dixon and longtime party worker Linda Benoit are also seeking the leadership, which, since late 2016, has been handled on an interim basis by MLA Stacey Hassard.

Oya - JC said he would like to FN ownership of private property. JC is aware that the current legal framework does not allow for that. It was a wish not an assertion that one should dish.

Woodcutter - Really? Insurance on band housing? By the way, log-homes when built correctly are more energy efficient than a home made out standard building material.

So here we see the Silver-tongued devils be... Spewing their liberal lunacy...

Encourage the log home industry in the Yukon - har har har. I wonder who is pandering to now? Log houses are an energy hog, so expensive to operate, so expensive to build. It makes me wonder if boy genius has a clue when it comes to housing?

@JC you really need to school up on first nation governments, cause your coming across as my red neck uncle spouting off uniformed and silly commentary .

Vote for Brad, let him have a taste of defeat, like the last leader of the conservative.

Well my first question to Mr. Cathers would be, "Why didn't you do all this when you were in power? " Then I would like to know if he was part of that YAA rhubarb where the consultant wanted to be the builder of the riding stable. That entity is resurfacing again in the form of wildfire management.

@Oya
" If Cathers wants log homes in the Yukon, he might need to provide rebates or something to offset the high insurance costs to make it happen. But I'm sure he's thought that through, right?"

At least Cathers is putting out policy ideas so people can understand what he stands for and will do. The other candidates have put out nothing, zip, zilch, to my knowledge on where they stand on issues or on specifics of what they want to do, what their policies would be etc. If Cathers loses to someone who doesn't stand for anything or is scared to take a stand on anything, I fear for the Yukon Party's future. If members elect Currie or Linda based on nothing but a smile and a handshake - they deserve what they get.

Now destruction of riparian zones by any comers from around the world, (free entry system, not updated since the gold rush), in order to hoard gold, is not only harmless to these valuable ecosystems that are chewed up and spit out, it 'enhances' them. In other news, up is down and black is white.

I am finished with this candidate, right here: "recognizing habitat enhancement due to excellence in placer mining reclamation"
Thanks for sharing.

@ JC First Nations cannot own land in their own communities because the land is predominantly settlement land. FNs do not sell their land - to anyone.

For some FNs, their constitution or whatever they call their governance documents actually forbid the sale of their FN land. Their land is really all they have to govern, hence land claims, and the chunks of land are pretty small relatively speaking. If they sell it off, even to their own members, their government will have nothing left for the generations that follow. That is why FN land, if available at all, is always offered only as a lease. Example: KDFN built some condos downtown and the condo corp leases the land the condo sits on from KDFN. The condo corp will never own the land, ever. Another example: KDFN cleaned up their block of land in the Marwell area to make it available to businesses, again on a lease basis. Usually those leases go 99 years or so.

And it is not YG or Canada who builds them shoe box trailer types; it is the FN that chooses what to build for their people. Other govs might contribute funds, but that's it. The FN specs the houses, finds the contractors, and usually try to secure jobs for their people in the building stages.

And Linda is right about log homes and insurance. If Cathers wants log homes in the Yukon, he might need to provide rebates or something to offset the high insurance costs to make it happen. But I'm sure he's thought that through, right?

Pasloski Middle School

"If he’s elected premier" rather presumptuous - he is not even the leader of the Yukon Party and he is spouting off about what he would do as the Premier?
Maybe he should tell us how, as Yukon Party leader, how he would ensure some accountability from the Liberals.

SOOO - the most useful thing that WELL PAID civil servant Cathers can think to do to help The Yukon through the current crisis is to tell us that he wants a more important job in the local "Hellfire Club " ?

@Just Wondering

Well Brad is the only one making announcements so it makes sense. The others haven't made any announcements about any policies or ideas. If they did, maybe they would actually get coverage?

Why does Cathers get featured so much more often than the other candidates? Are all those articles in the Whitehorse Star bought by Brad's re-election team without being declared as advertorials?

Well done Brad. It's refreshing to hear actual plans and policies from candidates. You are the only one with real conservative substance. The young fraternity boy running against him on the other hand has not released a single piece of policy or platform but expects to win solely on being a social butterfly and bringing in his hockey and drinking buddies.

Well!! well!!! Soo original to read the Star the last 2 weeks and copy all the thoughts of others then rephrase them. Also typical Conservatism - cut taxes to help big money dreamers access our money to build a dream. Let those constituent farmers use their own money. Only a fool would build a log home - mainly because if you can find an insurer, the cost of insurance is prohibitive.

Why is Cathers getting so much "free" coverage in the local media ?
There are 2 other arguably better candidates in the election he is running in.

Something does not smell right.

YAWN !
"Just For Men" Cathers is currently running in an election that
the vast majority of we Yukoners won't be voting in because we're not card carrying members of the Pasloski Party.

How many of these platitudes will still be around if he does become
"The Next Darryl" ?

Nice plan. Finally some sensible ideas. I would like to see the First Nations build log homes in their communities instead of those ugly shoe box trailer types the Government builds for them. And would be nice to see them personally own property lots in their communities as well. There's nothing like owning one's own property and home.

Please, nobody forget his comment last year when he told the current YG Premier to go back to Nova Scotia.

These comments speak to his position on those that move here. Such positions can be damaging to our unity. The Yukon is the most welcoming place in Canada, so taking positions like this are the exception and not suited for leadership.
