Health care would be a top priority for a Yukon Party government led by Brad Cathers, says the candidate for the party’s leadership .

That would include a committed to exploring options for hemodialysis in the Yukon if elected party leader and eventually to office.

As the Star reported Wednesday, Whitehorse resident Terry Coventry, 74, has opted to return home to die rather than leave the Yukon for a city like Vancouver to receive hemodialysis treatment for kidney failure.

Pat Living, the Department of Health and Social Services’ communications director, said Wednesday the Yukon doesn’t have the population required to support hemodialysis treatment.

“What’s happening is heartbreaking,” Cathers told the Star Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement issued earlier in the week, the Lake Laberge MLA said, “My vision for health care includes working with Yukon health care professionals to determine the needs and agree on priorities for our hospitals, health centres, continuing care facilities, and EMS stations.”

He announced his leadership bid on Dec. 5.

If he wins the party’s helm on May 23, 2020 and the election set for 2021, Cathers said, he would:

• ensure proper funding for the Yukon Hospital Corp. every year;

• work with Yukon health professionals to set priorities for new equipment, technology and improved facilities; and

• invest in reducing wait times for Yukon patients.

During the leadership campaign, Cathers plans to reach out to health professionals across the Yukon and listen to their ideas and priorities.

“If I am elected as leader, we will invite health professionals to help the Yukon Party build an election platform that sets out a clear plan for improving our health care system, and meeting the needs of Yukon citizens now and for years to come,” said Cathers.

He is a former minister of Health and Social Services. When he held that portfolio, he said, the government worked with public servants and health professionals, and took action to improve the Yukon’s health care system including:

• starting the 811 Yukon Healthline;

• the Telehealth network expanded to all Yukon communities;

• a $12.7 million Health Human Resources Strategy, with bursaries for doctors, nurses, and other health professionals that have helped 158 Yukon students since 2006;

• starting the Family Physician Incentive Program for New Graduates, to encourage doctors to move here;

• increased funding for the Yukon Hospital Corp.; and

• opening new continuing care beds.

“The current government has fumbled the ball on Yukon health care,” said Cathers.

“If I am elected as your leader, a Yukon Party government will work closely with our health professionals and the organizations representing them, and with the Yukon Hospital Corporation, to improve our health care system.

“We will also ensure that patient feedback helps guide those decisions.”

Currie Dixon, who served with Cathers in former premier Darrell Pasloski’s cabinet, is also contesting the Yukon Party leadership. He did not run in the 2016 election, which the Liberals won.

I like that Brad is coming out and taking positions on things and getting his message out there. Shows that he knows what it takes, unlike the 33 year old Liberal challenging him for the Yukon Party leadership. Good on ya Brad, keep up the good work!

Submissions to this forum provide just a hint at what elected people can expect to get in their email, Facebook page, Twitter, or hear while standing in line at the grocery store, bank or picking their kid up from hockey practice. Before they get elected they are just like you and me. But when they are selected by the majority of our neighbours to represent our collective viewpoint, these politcians morph into vile and unfriendly agents of chaos of some kind.
Small town politics is not for the faint of heart and I applaude any who give it a try. Thanks for trying to make a positive difference,

Pasloski hasn't gone anywhere.
He's easy to see lurking in the shadows.
Trying to get his former campaign manager elected as MP for example.

Olaf - Brad and the other Yukon Party MLAs (and the NDP for that matter) have been hammering on the current government for three years now on everything, including health care. I would also point out that Brad's announcement for his leadership bid stressed that health care would be a priority, ahead of Terry's tragic situation coming out in the news.

Terry needs this now - I do know him but he needs this now - if he needed a kidney, a heart he would be getting it - dear god what is wrong here?

If the present liberal gov't didn't waste money on $2.3 million dollar youth homes, and giving perpetual care to illicit drug users, there would be money for hemodialysis for people like Terry..

We can’t afford it all. I though the YP was supposed to be fiscally conservative?
We couldn’t afford to build or run either the Watson Lake hospital or the Dawson one, but hey, it buys votes so spend!

More politician's lies. I would like to say "Do they think we're that stupid??" except that, collectively, we are. We prove it again and again when we fall for lies like this.

Too late Brad, you had an opportunity to fix this when you and your cronies were in the drivers seat. Instead of looking after the citizens and voters by ensuring adequate health care for us that require treatment in Vancouver, you instead provided hand outs to mining companies.

I hope one day, you don't find yourself in a position where you have to face the fact that life prolonging treatment is out of reach because the elected officials didn't want to add a few dollars to make it possible. Really what would it cost? Maybe a $1000 a month?

Next time a Chinese consortium comes to the Yukon with promises of opening another mine, reflect on this issue. Millions to a venture that probably will go bust or a few dollars to help a fellow citizens to live in dignity. From his photo standing in a shop, it appears that he has paid a life time of taxes and deserves some payback

What is Mr. Cather's position on abortion and has he ever attended a Pride event?

So .. only if you are elected leader? Why not hammer the opposition into submission now? Terry kinda needs it now..not in May..or later.
Hooking onto a dying mans last wish is drastic, and we haven't even started campaigning yet!
Expected better of you Brad.

Darrell Drugstore: And who do you think has to pay for good healthcare - the people/taxpayers do. Duhhh! Brad has done a lot for health care for the Yukon when he was Minister of Health and Social Services. More than anyone in the Liberal Govt. And by the way, Darrell Pasloski is no longer Premier. So, please get over your obsession and move on.

Of course he would explore hemodialysis options... how else is he going to win the election?

I'm not that interested on how the Gov't spends money (and increases taxes), I'm more interested on where they will save money.

YESSSSS BRAAAAD
Our little fiefdom of 40,000 people should have EVERYTHING every big city in Canada has.
And I'll bet that you will whine when the rest of the country asks us to pay for it.
