Jordan and Joleen Mullet lost everything in a house fire on Dec. 22, but thanks to the residents of Carmacks and others across the Yukon, things may be looking up for the couple.

John Laughlin, president of the Carmacks Wheelbarrow Association, said Wednesday an alcohol-free family event at the Carmacks Recreation Centre on Saturday, Jan. 15 is aimed at raising much-needed funds for the couple.

The association is probably best known for hosting the community's annual wheelbarrow relay, which raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, but it also puts on a number of other community events through the year.

Laughlin said after the Mullets' home burned in December, he and other members of the group were looking for a way to help the couple. Along with individual donations that have been made, they came up with the idea of a larger fund-raiser to be held this month.

Details of the fire are scarce.

Laughlin said he was not in the community at the time, and while Carmacks RCMP were called to the blaze at 1:45 p.m., it hasn't been deemed as suspicious.

The Star's calls to Carmacks fire chief Rob Cochrane this week have not been returned. A report has yet to be filed with the territorial fire marshal's office.

Laughlin, who had helped the couple clean their chimney about 10 days before the fire, said though he knows little about the cause, "it went fast.”

The couple has been staying with family in the community. They will soon be moving into another home owned by the Little Salmon-Carmacks First Nation, Laughlin said.

While they will soon have a home, they remain in need of a many things, and Laughlin hopes the Jan. 15 event will provide some.

He doesn't have a set goal for how much he'd like to see raised, noting that whatever donations come in will help. He said he also recognizes the event is happening shortly after the Christmas season.

It's set to include a silent auction and live entertainment from across the Yukon that's now being lined up.

The fund-raiser will begin at 3 p.m. and go "until the last person leaves,” Laughlin said.

Dancers from Teslin are set to perform, and Laughlin is in touch with a number of others who may take to the stage. He noted any performers who want to show off their talents are welcome, and will be given time to do so.

In an effort to make it family-friendly, Laughlin said there will be no alcohol at the event. There may even be some smaller items in the silent auction aimed at kids who want to join in the bidding.

Anyone wanting to sign on as a performer or who can't make it to the event but want to donate can do so by calling Laughlin at 867-863-6996.

This marked the second major house fire in Carmacks last month after the Blackjack family lost everything in a blaze early in December.

A fund-raiser was also held for that family in the Yukon College gym in Whitehorse.
