Carmacks arena to be ready this fall
After some frustrating delays, the new Carmacks arena is scheduled to be finished this autumn.
After some frustrating delays, the new Carmacks arena is scheduled to be finished this autumn.
That was the word from Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn last Wednesday as Yukon Party MLA Geraldine Van Bibber raised the subject.
“Last year, the minister told us that the Carmacks arena is slated to be completed in the fall of 2022,” Van Bibber said.
The original budget for the project was just over $16 million, she noted.
“Can the minister confirm that the project is on track to be completed this fall? Can he tell us the new total budget for that project?”
Mostyn gave a positive answer.
“These investments are critical to our community, and we know that there were some issues with the Carmacks arena,” he said.
“The key contractor actually pulled out of the job and left us in a pickle. We are actually working to get that project back on track.
“We fully expect it to be finished in the next few months,” he said.
“We also are working very hard to recoup costs from the former contractor on this job,” Mostyn added.
“I know how important recreation is to the community of Carmacks. I know they’re expecting this rink, and I’m really excited — I will be very excited to see it open in the next few months.”

@ JC - let me clarify, I am happy Carmacks is getting anything really. Flood restoration should be next for the communities as well as basic services. It is the attitude of the parties in power territorially that I take issue with. It is easy for people to proclaim racism when a person critically thinks through and expresses a difficult opinion; Do not mix one up with the other. If they profess equality, it should be exemplified in their conduct as I am paying for, as are you.

@ JC - I am glad you asked. The day before this report, opposition was questioning the overspend on Whistlebend school, which was met by insults and unprofessional response to inquiry about a project that affects everyone. The next day, boy, they had all kinds of answers for Carmacks. So what I am talking about is the double standards of our presiding Yukon territorial government, over which the Yukon Liberal Party presides, in abject failure and dangerous ideology that affect us all. I am aware they didn't mention BIPOC, so I am pointing out that the BIPOC issue was addressed as the public issue ought to have also been. Do you think that is good practice?

Uh, Mitch?
What the hell are you talking about?
This is an arena in Carmacks. There is no mention of BIPOC anywhere in the article

Scott Steel is the contractor who did not complete, not the first one. Look at the track record.

So, who's going to finish the contract? Was it sole-sourced, tendered, is there a company even identified yet? Has a legal action been started against the defaulting company? Has the government applied (or whatever they do) to access the performance bonds yet? Exactly how much money are we talking about? Will Yukon Taxpayers be on the hook for this boondoggle, too?
I've been noticing in both our local newspapers lately that, often, there are not many details or facts included in the "journalistic reporting". Is that because of inflation? Short-staffed? It's a sad state of affairs when the placing of the DQ sign gets more coverage than everything else that could/should be newsworthy!

@ Ooh baby, baby - Sorry, I don't speak passive progressive troll or post modernist Ebonics, can you try that in a national language please? Maybe refine your bigotry to make some kind of a point.....in your case, 10 dislikes would have belied your truth more than your failure to be edgy. Try again, try harder. I don't have a people. Do you?

Interesting comment on we are working real hard to recoup costs from our former contractor.
First a construction contract this big would have performance and material and labour bonds that can be executed if a contractor pulled out.
Second then the government sues for any extra costs that would be part of the contract.
So please tell me that is what the government is doing. I sure and the hell hope a construction contract was not signed without performance and labour and materials bonds.

Don't leave the rear doors to the arena open as someone might get a break-away and skate all the way to Dawson city before realizing.

Ooh, baby, baby, it’s a wild Liberal world… on Apr 19, 2022 at 6:38 pm
Sorry Mitch - You people will be subject to discriminatory treatment for the next 4-500 years. We are ridding ourselves of Le Blanc Scourge one child at a time. This is the reason for the current assault on knowledge, expertise, and standardization. We are taking everything; your hearts, your minds, and your property - YOU will own nothing and be happy, if you want, the choice is yours.
But rest assured, not even your minds will be yours. Before the words, turn about is FairPlay, can be spoken it will be too late. Your kids will be absconded through the deployment of wokeist ideals… They will be gone inside their heads full of worries, hopes, and dreads… Climate change, climate change, climate change… Twisting inside their thoughts, brain aneurisms throwing off clots, you’ve stolen my childhood and now my planet has the hots…

Great questions, simple questions, "will it actually be done for fall" and "how much over cost is it"
If course Moystn, with NO clear answer for such simple questions..

Notice how YTG bends over backwards to placate BIPOC at the expense of everyone else. We were asking about the Whistlebend school this week, how was the response to our inquiry? Insulting, is what it was. When will YTG treat it's Caucasian constituents the same as anyone else, or does this Liberal government exemplify systemic racism incarnate? Rather than 26 dislikes from some benchwarmers in YTG, how about you try to answer for your racism and endeavour to do better? Your reply is worth more than 10 of your dislikes. So if you think you have an answer, I welcome it.
