Care staff feeling effects of second shots

By Tim Giilck on February 8, 2021
The Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) is sounding an alarm over the way the territorial government is handling the after-effect of its vaccine rollout with its Department of Health and Social Services workers.
Over the weekend, Steve Geick, the president of the YEU, posted some startling numbers on social media.
“According to the YG Public Service Commission, roughly 60 per cent of Continuing Care staff were off sick yesterday, Friday Feb. 5,” he wrote on the YEU Facebook page.
“Group-vaccinated essential workers are dealing en masse with the side effects of their second shot of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.”
Geick said today he received updated numbers that indicated the 60 per cent figure was for a specific location, contrary to what he had originally been told.
“I’ll bet that’s pretty close to the figure for the department as a whole, though,” he said.
“I learned yesterday afternoon that a memo went out to YEU Continuing Care workers. If they were feeling unwell after their second shot, they were told to phone their scheduler, stay home and wait.
“Since the side-effects mimic COVID symptoms, someone from YCDC would phone them to discuss their symptoms and talk about next steps. These workers don’t know if they are off work for a day or a few days, and must isolate while they await instruction and testing,” he continued.
In an interview with the Star this morning, Geick expressed his concerns over a lack of consistency in how the situation is being handled.
Too many contradictory messages are being relayed to front-line workers affected by the situation, despite the instructions in the memo, he said.
Geick also said the number of people off work Friday due to side-effects from the second dose of the Moderna vaccine was likely unprecedented.
He said he comes from a nursing background, and that you can always expect some side-effects from a vaccine program, even for something like influenza.
However, he can’t remember an instance where so many people were affected, although a situation such as the COVID-19 pandemic is also unprecedented.
That information is not going to be good news to what’s being called the “vaccine hesitant” portion of the Yukon population.
As to why the government had not released that information to the public, he said he couldn’t offer a comment.
Geick said the government in general is continually inconsistent in how it’s handled this kind of situation during the pandemic.
The Department of Health and Social Services, he added, has been by far the worst culprit in not having a plan to handle instances like this with any consistency.
“It’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” Geick said.
“I’ve talked to them about it repeatedly, but it’s fallen on deaf ears.
“If they would just take a few more minutes to figure out what they want to do, it would be great,” he said.
“I get why they are doing it (sending workers home) but not how they are doing it. It’s very concerning. People shouldn’t have to use their sick leave for this situation.
“I did receive calls from people who were at work and told to go home, and were instructed to use sick leave. That’s total BS,” Geick said.
“I met with the Public Service Commission yesterday and told them there is no way people should have to use their sick leave; many are already using next year’s sick leave after the employer’s bad COVID leave practices.
“Auxiliary On-C (AOC) Employees have no sick leave to begin with, and Continuing Care operates on the backs of AOCs.”
Those AOC workers, Geick said, had already logged 300,000 hours in the last half of 2020.
They are called in to address temporary staff shortages when full-time workers aren’t available.
Geick said it was wrong to put them in that position, especially with so many workers out on Friday.
If the AOC workers don’t accept shifts, they won’t get paid, putting more pressure on them when they might be suffering from the same type of symptoms that were sending the permanent staff home
“One of my big concerns is those people,” Geick said.
He said that after meeting with the commission over the weekend, “the employer suggested that people will probably not need to use sick leave after all, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
“And if the use of sick leave/no sick leave is applied in a discriminatory way, YEU wants to know – we’ll act swiftly to correct that.”
Cabinet spokesman Matthew Cameron released this statement to the Star early this afternoon.
“Because of the vulnerable population that Continuing Care staff care for, all staff are encouraged to stay home at any sign of illness,” he wrote.
“This precautionary step is taken to ensure that residents are safe and don’t come into contact with illness by way of the staff. This applies any time there is illness in the community, including COVID-19.
“Staff in long-term care began receiving their second dose of the Moderna vaccine last week,” Cameron added.
“It is normal that after the second dose a number of side effects will occur and individuals are advised of this possibility when receiving the immunization.
“Symptoms may present as similar to COVID-19 symptoms. This is actually a sign that the vaccine is working. However, if staff present with symptoms, they must either stay home or get tested.”
While some staff have been affected by the second shot, Cameron wrote, “it is not true that 60 per cent of continuing care workers were off the job on Friday.”
Cameron quoted government figures indicating approximately 10 per cent of continuing care workers were absent on Friday.

Two weeks ago Merck decided to go with therapeutics to treat Covid instead of Vaccines ... thanks to their latest findings.
The test subjects immune responses were inferior for SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 Vaccines vs the subjects natural responses to the virus itself!! This is huge news and brings into question the need for dangerous experimental mRNA Vaccines.

I had my second dose yesterday and I've had some side effects. Now I'm being told that I have to get tested or self isolate for 10 days. I am quite upset that a few others have had similar effects and are not being tested. I haven't been anywhere accept work (long term care) and home. When I asked why I have to get tested if these are common side effects after getting the vaccine and all I got in response is well you have 2 choices. I've had the covid swab before and I must say it was a traumatic experience for me and I don't wish to do it again. If I knew I would have to go through this, I never would have gotten the shot.

Governments need to be honest with people. The vaccine has caused strong reactions in some people and if you take it, it could happen to you. This is counter-intuitively the best way to fight anti-vax sentiment. If they can prove your lying about the side effects then they also assume your lying about autism and all that other claptrap.

Woah. Pretty thick in here. Allow me some leeway to translate the basic science into boomer:
The Moderna vaccine is intended to cause an immune response. Something on the level of a mild allergic reaction. It presents your body with a synthetic version of what’s commonly being called the ‘T’ cell (those fish-hook-like bits which protrude from the sphere-like body of the virus) and causes an immune reaction to tell your system ‘this is bad, kill it’.
The ‘T’ cells of this virus have empowered it to act like a tennis ball covered in fishing hooks once it gets into your lungs. The conservation officer that is your immune system in this scenario will know what to look for and do a better job after the ‘training’ the vaccine provides. This makes the hooks less effective... barbless, if you will.
Herd immunity through the Moderna vaccine means we (the fish) are all swimming in waters fished with barbless hooks. Those of us who are caught and released by the virus will have less damage to us. Some of us will still be caught and eaten, but far less than with barbed hooks.
Do you get it now?

See this January 2021 research paper published in "Microbiology & Infectious Diseases", entitled:
"COVID-19 RNA Based Vaccines and the Risk of Prion Disease"
https://scivisionpub.com/pdfs/covid19-rna-based-vaccines-and-the-risk-of-prion-disease-1503.pdf
Excerpts:
"The current RNA based SARSCoV-2 vaccines were approved in the US using an emergency order without extensive long term safety testing."
...
"This paper focuses on a novel potential adverse event mechanism causing prion disease which could be even more common and debilitating than the viral infection the vaccine is designed to prevent. While this paper focuses on one potential adverse event there are multiple other potential fatal adverse events as discussed below.
Over the last two decades there has been a concern among certain scientists that prions could be used as bioweapons. More recently there has been a concern that ubiquitous intracellular molecules could be activated to cause prion disease including Alzheimer’s disease, ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. This concern originates due to potential for misuse of research data on the mechanisms by which certain RNA binding proteins like TDP-43, FUS and others can be activated to form disease causing prions."

It's only Feb. 10. How could people already be using NEXT YEAR'S sick leave?!
And the union rep is saying even though people are sick, they should not 'have to use their sick leave'. What is it for then? When they are well and want a paid day off?
I'm getting the feeling that sick leave is seen as an entitlement to be used up as the employee sees fit.
I get it that if they were told they had to be immunized to work there, and then they 'got sick' (ie, their immune system responded properly to the vaccine), then it's not their fault but I do not think paid sick leave is about assigning fault. These are paid days off if you are not feeling well, and this is what sick leave is for.
For the staff who do not get these benefits and are told to stay home, I agree that they should be paid for whatever they work on average compared to their days off. The rest of them should just use their sick days and suck it up that they can't extend a few weekends this summer.
I missed about one day a year due to illness when I used to work as 'staff' in a regular job.

Thank goodness someone is talking about the negative effects of the Moderna vaccine. The CMoH and the politicians and their government agents seem completely incapable of telling us the truth.
We have been told repeatedly that "the vaccine" is safe, even though Health Canada (under tremendous pressure) has only issued an Interim Order for its use, and the vaccine is not authorized at all for anyone under 18. And, it's becoming increasingly apparent that it's use should be carefully considered in other individuals (e.g. severely aged).
And, yes - HSS has failed to plan appropriately for the fallout of the vaccine.

I predicted this and nobody wanted to hear it, so now hopefully people will seriously consider the long-term consequences of participating in unregulated experimental drug trials. Anyone who has been part of drug trials in the past can tell you that the consequences are lifelong, debilitating and often include zero compensation from the manufacturers. With no commitment from Pfizer or Moderna regarding future compensation for unforeseen effects, this should start raising some eyebrows.
According to the Nuremberg Code all people have the right, and responsibility to give or withhold informed consent; let us now inform ourselves on the ingredients (including the nanoparticle lipids synthesized from petrochemicals), and decide if this is really the safest course of action for our isolated territory.

It should not come as a surprise that more will get sick from this experimental so-called 'vaccine' than got sick with Covid during the past year. A Carcross elder died a few days ago; the 'news' is understandably silent about the fact that he very likely got the vax-shot recently.
Presumably the LIBgov got enough doses to achieve their definition of 'herd immunity' for the Yukon, so we can end the charade, take off the masks, and everyone get back to work.
If so, when will that happen?
If not, then what's the purpose for getting shots that will make some of us sick or even die if it's not going to stop the restrictions.
Wake-up LIBgov: Trump is gone, the Plandemic is over, stop meddling in our lives and let people get back to living normally.

There is a mainstream media blackout on anti-viral medications (Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine, Vitamin D, Zinc) that have successfully and safely suppressed covid-19, without side effects. These medications have decades-long record of safety. Research also indicates that Ivermectin and Vitamin D can even prevent covid-19 symptoms.
By all ethical standards, our health care system should make these medications available to the public so that each person can decide on the basis of INFORMED consent what form of prevention and treatment they will choose.
Remember your Hippocratic oath.
Here is a site for information on Ivermectin protocols and a list of recent studies on Ivermectin’s success in combatting covid-19:

Really the issue here is that so many of these workers got very sick from the second shot. This is very concerning, and should be upfront in the public arena for discussion. How safe is this experimental ‘vaccine’? There are reports the world over that it makes many people severely ill, and death occurred soon after the jab in some cases.
Are long-term care employees pressured to take this ‘vaccine’? Will they lose their job if they refuse to take it? Are they really getting the information they need about the ‘vaccine’ in order to provide INFORMED consent?
According to many media reports, up to 60% of nursing home staff and health care workers in the USA have refused the experimental covid ‘vaccine’.
The funny thing is that even the World Health Organization admits that this experimental ‘vaccine’ won’t stop transmission of the covid virus, it only suppresses the symptoms. So, it makes no sense that health care workers are pressured to take it.

Shawn Kolack, settle down. A Covid test after the second shot is needed because a person might not have reacted to the virus before the shot, and not yet have symptoms. But hey, if you don't want a shot, don't get one. The rest of Canada has not been given the same proportional amount as the Yukon. Alberta has not even had enough for long term care, and it will be September before an average not vulnerable person has an opportunity to get a shot. Alberta didn't vote liberal. I'm sure there are lots of people who will gladly take your shot.

@ Comen Sense - Not only would they use them to extend their weekends but we had she/he/they who would, call in sick for the first day due back from his/her/their holidays. If there was an important baseball or hockey game on he/she/they would be off that day, sick. If he had his own sports game/tournament he would call in sick. The patterns were unmistakeable but management does not deal with blatant patterned absenteeism.
Unfortunately though the complaints today are going to ruin it for others tomorrow. They should go after their pensions. In the real world private sector someone like this would have been fired a long time ago.
But hey - YG has its favourites. Heck, perhaps when this person was out of sick leave, I have seen management sitting in this employees office watching the big game during work hours. So, whatcha gonna do about it.
Meanwhile unpopular Susy gets targeted for his/her/their sick leave usage. So, goose and gander, one gets the noose and the other gets the pander.
So, Geick can take another hike. There are better uses of the Unions time such as discrimination, harassment, abuse of power, and many other concerns that need the Union’s real attention - Not some politically expedient ego boosting, self-inflating, non-issue of the day.
FFS - There has been an ongoing issue with staffing in Continuing Care for a long time and in H&SS more generally. And again, look at the turnover rates. They are NOT putting employees first... this is all about Steve and his political supports. How is Yukon supposed to provide education and encourage all Yukoners to take the vaccine... to PROTECT all of us - when the union is creating fear among staff. Yes, after a vaccine you may get mild symptoms - that means the vaccine is doing its job and creating antibodies. This is great - it means it is effective. Yes, if you are a working in Long Term Care - one of the MOST Vulnerable care settings - and you get sick, stay home. That is what sick leave is for.
Shame on the Union for basically saying "don't vaccinate staff." This article has made me sick. Shame on the Union for using false statistics to create a bigger issue. I would love to know how to opt-out of the Union. They do NOTHING for the average employee.

It’s interesting that this story contains numerous references to inconsistent messaging, bad planning, bad practices, and generally poor management within H&SS. This is not new. It preceded the pandemic with the pandemic providing us one more frame with which to view the disaster of H&SS. The turnover rates, the ongoing bad press, and the generally toxic work environments are some pretty big clues about the management structure and the HR practices within YG - WTF?
The Union has had many opportunities to address these concerns prior to this. However, it has chosen to passively acquiesce through abdication of its duty to represent. It will now represent you if you meet the political criteria for representation. Guess what - You still got to pay your dues. Nice racket for the enhancement of narcissistic idylls.

Congratulations YEU and Mr.Geick. You have created more fear around the vaccine for nothing. There were probably already some people worried about it and now you likely pushed them into the anti-vaxxer group. Which means less herd immunity for Yukon. You could easily have raised your concerns with YTG behind closed doors but then I suppose you wouldn't get to raise your profile and have your time in the media spotlight. Me thinks it may be a union election year?
As a general rule, maybe you should be quiet until the pandemic is over. Government workers have it MUCH better than the private sector ESPECIALLY right now during the pandemic. Like that time off campaign you are currently running for govy workers. Many in the private sector have permanent time off right now, So maybe instead of demanding more paid time off, you just be thankful that you have a job! Like really.

I am frankly surprised that this article is more about unpaid sick leave (even though understandably this is very important to the people involved) than the vaccine reaction. Should people really get this sick from an experimental vaccine?
Over 60% sick? Shouldn't we investigate before more shots are issued? An elder in Tagish died 2 weeks after the first shot. Coincidence or not? From the vaccine data broadcasted around the world, it might be linked to the experimental vaccine, and for the safety of all I believe it is paramount to do an autopsy? What if it is your grandfather or brother or child next? What if it could be prevented?
The experimental vaccine is still on trial. The trial ends in 2023 once all data has been compiled. Vaccine hesitancy can only be overcome if the product is actually safe. In a trial we really, really need to take down all information on adverse reactions and death (autopsies).
Over 60% of people falling ill, a friend's neighbour losing control of his feet and having to go to the hospital for an MRI, an elder maybe dying of it? If we are conscientious about this trial vaccine, we need to check into these cases. There is no saving lives when it kills.

According to instructions, there is a suggested time limit for drinking alcohol before and after. But, I'm sure most don't heed this. Perhaps this is why so many have gotten such bad side effects. And how many were aware of this? There was no after shot instructions from the nurse or even the government. This should have been presented by the gov. and media.
