The Yukon Coroner’s Service is investigating a motor vehicle death that occurred near Carcross last Saturday afternoon.
Shortly after 5 p.m., Carcross RCMP reported an ATV fatality to the Yukon Coroner’s Service that had occurred at kilometre 103 of the South Klondike Highway.
The driver was 75-year-old Menno “Ken” Matthies, a long-time resident of Carcross.
Matthies’ wife was a passenger on the ATV and received minor injuries during the incident.
“The couple had been on a recreational ride along the highway after leaving their home in Carcross,” the Coroner’s Service said Monday afternoon.
“The vehicle was travelling slowly when it rolled after trying to access the highway by driving up a steep embankment.
“The passenger was able to exit the vehicle and flag down highway travellers for help, but sadly, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
The Coroner’s Service continues its investigation of the fatality.
“We are extremely grateful to the Carcross RCMP detachment and the members of the public who stopped to provide assistance when the tragedy occurred,” the Coroner’s Service said.
“The Yukon Coroner’s Service extends our sincerest condolences the family and friends of Mr. Matthies, as well as the community of Carcross, during this time of deep grief.”
