At about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Whitehorse RCMP received a complaint of a possible impaired driver parked near the 202 Motor Inn.
Soon after the first call, a second call was received stating the male driver had driven into a wall at the motel, then fled the scene, police said Wednesday afternoon.
A witness to the accident said the vehicle was driving up and down Jarvis Street so fast that its tires were squealing.
The witness left his office to see what the commotion was. He was walking down the street when the vehicle drove past the window of the office he had just exited and 'smacked' into the wall.
There is some brick work broken on the wall of the building, he said, but it is not major damage.
The witness then went back to his office and called the police.
The officers dispatched to the scene were able to follow the tips of witnesses and track the driver to Main Street in front of the Edgewater Hotel.
The driver appeared to have lost control of his car and had driven into a Yukon Electrical Co. Ltd. truck parked outside the hotel.
Ed Sager, the spokesperson for the company, said today the truck had been struck hard enough to push it several feet, causing it to strike another vehicle.
The truck has sustained some damage, said Sager, but is still drivable. It will take a few days to get an estimate on the cost of the damage, he added.
RCMP officers immediately arrested the driver near the Edgewater.
The suspect is also believed to have caused damage to parking barriers and another business situated on First Avenue.
A 26-year-old Whitehorse resident is now in police custody facing alcohol-related charges.
