A cap gun looked real enough to prod two people into calling the RCMP Monday with reports of a youth waving around a handgun.

The first call, from an employee at the Elijah Smith Building, came in at 4:20 p.m., Staff Sgt. Ray Fast said today.

A group of five or six young people had been seen inside the building, and one carried what appeared to be a handgun. Another witness later told police the cap gun had been discharged inside the federal government building.

Ten minutes later, as officers were en route, a passerby called 911 on a cell phone to report several youth were at the corner of Main Street and Third Avenue, brandishing a handgun.

Once officers arrived, they arrested a 20-year-old Whitehorse man. He's facing weapons possession charges.

A replica of a .38 snubnose revolver, similar to the kind detectives in old cop movies always carried, was recovered, said Fast.

The Whitehorse RCMP detachment commander noted it doesn't matter if a gun is real or fake if it's used to intimidate someone.

It's not believed the replica was pointed at anyone.

Meanwhile, the U-Haul rental dealership at Race Trac Gas at the corner of Hamilton Boulevard and McIntyre Drive is short some fuel.

Sometime last weekend, the fuel lines of five rental trucks were unbolted and gas was siphoned off. It's not known how much fuel is missing, Fast said.

The thieves who made off with a snowmachine last night had better be mechanically inclined if they expect to ride their newest acquisition.

A broken-down 1995 Polaris Indy Storm 800 was stolen from the Arnhem Road yard it was parked in.

As well, one trailer at Northwest Transport was entered last weekend and an attempt was made to get into a second. It's not believed anything is missing from the Alaska Highway business.

Police officers responded to one family dispute in the last 24 hours after receiving a report of an assault. There will be no charges in that incident.
