A search for a 26-year-old male canoeist is continuing since he went missing over the long weekend while travelling on the Yukon River near Dawson City.

The man was last seen on at about 2 a.m. Saturday by members of his travelling party.

The group contacted authorities via satellite phone from an island on the river approximately 24 kilometres downriver from Dawson.

The RCMP and Emergency Measures Organization volunteers are conducting an extensive search of the surrounding islands and shorelines, police said.

"We're still looking," said Sgt. Dan Gaudet told the Star this morning from Dawson.

Gaudet said the volunteers are "combing" the river and surrounding area, and that the search will continue "until factors dictate otherwise."

Gaudet said police are still investigating the factors which led to the disappearance.
