As Dawson City begins hosting its annual music festival today, Wildland Fire Management staff are reminding campers there to make sure any campfires are out before leaving them.
Campfires continue to be permitted in the area that has been listed at an extreme danger rating for wildfires. However, this morning, a spokesman said they should be doused and stirred, with that caution perhaps repeated until there are no more coals burning when they are left for the night.
The fire district has seen 51,018.4 hectares burned over the summer, making up the better part of the total 60,726.49 hectares that has burned throughout the territory.
There have been 20 fires in the district over the summer.
While there were no new fires reported Thursday, a number continue to burn, including three in the Dawson region.
Closest to the community is a blaze near Fifty Mile Creek, about 65 kilometres west of Dawson and 6 1/2 kilometres from a mining camp. While the fire hasn't advanced, it's expected there could be increased activity coming.
Another is in the Valley Creek area, about 90 kilometres south of Dawson. It crossed the Stewart River on Wednesday and protection is now in place for a building in the area.
Finally, the blaze near Iron Creek, about 115 kilometres south of Dawson, has grown from its last mapped size of 13,400 hectares.
Also listed at an extreme rating is the Carmacks fire region, where seven fires have burned 7,195.65 hectares. One fire continues to burn there, about 65 kilometres east of the Carmacks community.
It was mapped at 7,180 hectares with crews attacking it Thursday, Wildland Fire Management reported in its daily update.
"At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, the eastern flank of the fire, subject to burnout procedures, crossed the Little Salmon River," reads today's update.
"Three helicopters and two air tanker groups were dispatched to the area, followed by ground crews, and that area of the fire was successfully contained.
"At 10:45 p.m. the wind changed direction; the western flank of the fire was driven across the the river and approached the Robert Campbell Highway, but did not reach it. Both the power line and the highway are not currently threatened by the fire."
The remaining blaze that is active in the territory is in the Whitehorse district, about 60 kilometres northeast of the city, burning on both sides of the Teslin River.
The district sits at a moderate risk, with a total of 21 fires this season burning 1,892.81 hectares.
Wildland Fire Management staff are reminding boaters to be cautious when they're on the Teslin River. It's advised they stay clear from the area of the fire. If they do travel through it, they should do so in the morning, stay in the centre of the river and avoid stopping under any circumstances.
Also listed at moderate fire risks are Watson Lake, Old Crow and Haines Junction, which is the only district of those three to have a fire this season. It burned 0.20 hectares.
Both Mayo and Ross River are at a high risk, with Mayo seeing two fires this season burning 262 hectares. Ross River has had more fires - at four - though they have burned a smaller area, at 2.03 hectares.
The only two districts to be listed at a low rating are Beaver Creek, which has seen three fires burning 355.8 hectares this season and Teslin, which has had no fires.
