NO POLITICIANS, PLEASE – Jim Robb, seen last week in the Star offices with his new calender, says he’s only interested in five per cent of the Yukon’s population.

Calendar brings colourful Yukoners back to life

Buoyed by the success of his first “Colourful Five Percent” calendar last year, renowned Yukon artist Jim Robb is selling a 2018 calendar.

This edition is resplendent with new photographs and drawings from his extensive collection of characters.

“A lot of these pictures have never been used before, for anything,” Robb told the Star last week.

From the late Cal Miller, a former Capital Hotel owner, to Sourtoe Cocktail creator Dick Stevenson, to Joe and Annie Henry, the Guinness World Record-winning longest-married couple, the calendar features photographs of Yukoners both living and deceased.

“I’m interested in young and old, as long as they’re interesting,” Robb said. “I’m not interested in boring bureaucrats or politicians.”

The artist explained that the success of last year’s calendar project and his desire to keep the trademarked “Colourful Five Percent” name top of mind among Yukoners prompted his decision to produce another calendar.

The name was born out of a column Robb wrote for the Star in the 1970s and resurrected in the 1990s and early 2000s.

“I’m only interested in five per cent of the population,” he explained.

Thus, the column title and enduring Yukon catchphrase was imagined.

The calendar also includes drawings of the places that his characters frequented or continue to frequent.

Cabins, interiors and Yukon landmarks are captured in his trademark style, self-described as “exaggerated truth,” where the shapes, angles, colours and features of his subjects are emphasized and embellished to express their inner strengths and character.”

Robb has lived in the Yukon for more than 60 years, having moved here from Quebec. His work is housed in the territory’s Permanent Art Collection.

The calendars are available at the UPS Store, Mac’s Fireweed Books, Well Read Books, Super A Porter Creek Grocery, G & R Pawnbrokers, the 202 Chinese Restaurant and Lucky Stars Chinese Restaurant.

So nice to see the characters from the past.

It's too bad Whitehorse has gone down hill and it's no longer a safe place to live.

How do we order a copy if we live outside Whitehorse? I have quite a few of Jim’s prints from my time in the Yukon. Would love to have both 2017 and 2018 calendars. Please email me with information. Thanks, Jim, for continuing your work.

Met Jim 42 years ago. He was one of the rare ones who captured the spirit of the Yukon. Unfortunately now though, the spirit has become a fantasy. And that only to a few.

Thank you Jim Robb for this and all the other great things you've done.
