A leading member of the Yukon’s mining community says he’s supporting Brad Cathers in his campaign to lead the Yukon Party.

“I have known Brad Cathers for 17 years, and I am pleased to support Brad in his campaign for leadership of the Yukon Party,” Rob McIntyre said Monday.

“Brad’s experience as minister for a long list of departments including Energy, Mines and Resources will help a government under his leadership hit the ground running. It’s time for the Yukon to have an experienced leader as our premier.”

Cathers, the MLA for Lake Laberge, said he is very pleased to receive the support.

“Over the course of his career, Rob McIntyre has been an industry leader in promoting and implementing environmentally sensitive mining and reclamation practices,” said Cathers. “I am honoured to have Rob McIntyre’s support.”

Cathers, McIntyre said, “supports responsible mining and understands the importance of taking action to fix problems in the assessment and permitting processes.

“He’s a terrific choice for taking the Yukon forward into a future where we have both economic prosperity and a healthy environment,” added McIntyre.

Cathers’ plan for improving assessment and permitting in the Yukon if elected leader in May 2020 includes working with all other levels of government and with the business community to find solutions to reduce overlap, duplication and unnecessary delays, while ensuring environmentally responsible mining and reclamation.

McIntyre, a 40-year Yukoner and father of three children, is a former president of the Yukon Chamber of Mines, chair of the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, and chair of the Yukon Gold Mining Alliance.

After co-founding and running Access Consulting Group for many years out of Whitehorse, he was vice-president, corporate affairs and business Development for Alexco Resource Corp., operator of the Bellekeno Silver Mine at Keno Hill.

McIntyre is currently president and CEO, Resource Strategies Inc. at Marsh Lake.

Before being elected as an MLA in 2002 and for a few years after, Cathers worked in the private sector and was part-owner of a wilderness tourism business.

Former cabinet minister Currie Dixon, who does not have a seat in the legislature, is also seeking the Yukon Party leadership.

If Rob says it's a good idea, it is.

PFFFFT - Cathers was the cabinet minister that the ENTIRE Whitehorse city council told Pasloski to get rid of because he was impossible to work with.

His "Go back to Antigonish, Silver" comment tells me that nothing has changed.

Has Mr. Cathers worked at his mathematical skills since the time when his party was defeated and he handed over the books? At that time he didn't seem to know the difference between a + and a -.

This makes sense. Brad has always been a big pro-mining guy. Much more so than the young Liberal challenging him. Only a real Conservative can bring the Yukon Party back to power. Go Brad!

@Dean
Pretty sure Rusty Pasloski is in Brad's camp. Who else would jump on that hemo-dialysis story the second it hit the press. Horrible optics and so opportunist it makes me physically ill.

Will the organizations that financed "Rusty Pasloski's" overbearing and content impaired campaign in the recent Federal election also be funding Cathers ?

The mining industry’s candidate. Good to get that cleared up...
Wonder what would happen if I staked a bunch of placer claims at the mouth of Laurier creek?

When is the local mining industry going to start running its own people as candidates instead of funding loyal toadies that it manipulates from the shadows ?

I respects Robs' insight and experience. He is a very accomplished and respected person in the Yukon. I support Brad Cathers.

MEH - I'd rather vote for McIntyre than Cathers or Dixon.

Geez with all them titles you'd think Mr. McIntyre should be seeking the party leadership. I wonder what business men are supporting Curry?

Curious. Do Cathers and McIntyre define 'responsible mining' as the tax payers being 'responsible' for the environmental disaster left behind by many operations?

No real surprise here, must be a slow news day.

Does this mean that we'll soon be seeing Cathers posters on the sides
of city buses ?
