A group of thieves is working in Whitehorse, preying on empty homes, local RCMP warned today.

"It's spread out all over," Sgt. Mark Groves of the Whitehorse RCMP detachment said of the six reported break and enters in the last 10 days.

"Up from Porter Creek, over to Copper Ridge and all the way down to Riverdale."

Police suspect at least two people are involved, but say it could be three or four.

The group sends one person up to knock on the door of a home that looks empty.

If someone answers the door, the would-be thief says he is looking for a friend and quickly leaves. If no one responds to the knock, they've found their mark.

The thieves seem to move quickly and go for easy-to-find, easy-to-carry items.

"They didn't seem to be targeting electronics," Groves said. "They are more interested in cash, and liquor as well – easily disposable items."

And they don't seem to be sticking around long enough to do much damage.

"I wouldn't say they committed any mischief or vandalism," Groves said.

In one case, the home owner interrupted the thieves in the act. The suspects fled the scene and the home owner was not harmed.

Groves recommends people keep their valuables out of sight and their entryways clear so neighbours can spot any suspicious activity.

"If it isn't adding up why they're at the door, give us a call," Groves said, adding that local Citizens on Patrol groups have also been alerted.

Last time I checked, booze wasn't a part of my insurance plan. And sure, maybe the cash *may* be covered under some policy... Provided they have insurance........

Otherwise, what, tough luck..too bad, so sad? The B+E artists deserve it more than the people who work for it?

Nice.

I know, and sometimes its such a shame Francis!!!

A person has no right to protect their family or posessions that they've worked so hard for...

There are those offender-based rights again!!

Taking the law into your hands is a crime. Go ask M-DIVISION for some clarification, lol.
