Bridge work delayed, but lights to shine this weekend

Cyclists commuting in and out of Riverdale will have to wait until next summer for their own space on the Robert Campbell Bridge.
The city had planned to have the bridge across the Yukon River widened to accommodate cycling traffic in both directions by the end of the fall.
As council learned at its meeting Tuesday evening though, construction won't get underway until next spring.
Coun. Dave Stockdale questioned Mike Gau, the city's director of development services, about the delay.
Gau said physical work on the bridge isn't expected to start until 2014 now.
Engineering manager Wayne Tuck explained in an interview this morning the design process has taken a little longer than expected.
After the design phase, there are still materials that will have to come in.
It had been anticipated that most of the work would be done this season, with some final work next year.
But, since the design is taking longer than expected, Tuck said, the city didn't want to see the work stop just shortly after starting this fall, as the weather gets cooler.
"It doesn't appear possible,” Tuck said of doing the construction work this fall.
Instead, the focus this year will be on finishing up the design and getting materials in place so that the physical work of widening the bridge can start as soon as the weather allows in the spring of 2014.
The city awarded the $1.58-million contract for the bridge in July to Wildstone Construction.
Despite the delay in construction work getting underway, Tuck expects the project will remain on budget.
Meanwhile, just beyond the bridge on the Riverdale side, commuters will notice a big change beginning Sunday, when the new traffic lights are activated at Hospital Road.
City officials said Thursday the new lights directing traffic will go into operation at 9 a.m. Sunday. Testing (putting them into flashing mode) is set for Saturday.
"These new signals are installed to provide for improved traffic flow through the intersection during peak-hour traffic flow conditions,” the city said in its statement.
"Traffic travelling on Lewes Boulevard will have priority at all times.”
The signals will change only when it is necessary for vehicles turning left from Hospital Road onto Lewes Boulevard, or for vehicles turning left toward downtown coming out of the skateboard park.
"For a vehicle to activate a green signal, they must stop over a wire loop buried underneath the asphalt.”
Skookum Asphalt was awarded the $195,955 contract for the work.
The city had initially considered building a roundabout to help control traffic at the intersection.
That, however, would not have suited the traffic patterns for Riverdale, which generally sees considerable northbound traffic in the morning and southbound traffic in the afternoon.
Roundabouts are typically better-suited to a more balanced flow, it was noted in an administrative report to city council earlier this year.

That is a recipe for disaster, you should never 'let' someone though if if contravenes right of way. It is illegal and dangerous.

No really? "Ooh scary traffic". For Someone who has probably lived here for a year or so you have no clue of what you are talking about. I've lived here my whole live, in Riverdale. The amount of traffic for "here" is too much. We know your previous big city's have more volume of traffic. Gee, I don't think we could of figured that out without your intelligent observation. Ever consider there are too many people here for our roads? Years ago we never had a traffic issue coming out of Riverdale. Nothing like today. So your opinion is irrevalant.

They wouldn't have needed this light if anyone could have displayed a modicum of courtesy to those folks trying to get to the hospital. One car turns, one goes straight, no back up in "traffic". And please, this does not count as traffic. I pity any of you who have drive down south ever if you think this constitutes traffic.

You're right, yukoner, I know what I can do with my bike, and what you can do with yours: ride it the flat 3 km, and breeze by traffic, instead of driving.

Why are there so many people that say we should walk or ride a bike because we live in Riverdale ? You know what you can do with your bike.

Riverdale is an excellent neighbourhood for walking and cycling to and from downtown. I agree with Paul. We would all be doing our kids a favour by encouraging them to walk to and from school, and by doing it ourselves.

For over 40 years, it has taken more time to drive from Riverdale to Downtown than from Porter Ck to Downtown, but who planned this mess? Something had to be done because Hospital Rd is a potential emergency intersection. Old hospital was before emergence of Riverdale so who were the short thinking nuts who put the new hospital on site of old hospital? If the dam goes out, the bridge goes out. Riverdale is flooded and majority of Whitehorse is cut off. If hospital is left high & dry, they will have a quiet time with no traffic.

riiiiiight...... I'll get right on that "other road out of Riverdale" XD
I want to know why they added in a turning lane for the skate park? Most people that go there are supplying special drinks to the kids that hang around the benches there. Complete waste of money for a turning lane that looks like it has some sort of disorder that couldn't make it a full lane.

re Paul's comments, one would think there are no schools anywhere else in town. I think I've heard rumours of schools on Range Road, Grove Street, MacPherson Road, Hamilton Blvd, and out in Golden Horn, and I think I've even heard a rumour about a high school just off Hickory Street.
If these students live downtown, they could WALK, and if they live a little further away but go to Collins, CKES or Vanier, they could be dropped off downtown... but I wonder why they aren't taking a school bus if they're that far away?
And if they miss the bus, could that be because the schools are unreasonably starting at 8 am instead of 9 am when kids are more likely to be awake and functional?
Seems to me that educators, city planners, parents and students need to get together and plan it so it works for everyone without parents having to play chauffeur.

Lights there work much better than no lights or a traffic circle.
Traffic a "NIGHTMARE"? Really? In Whitehorse? If you hate that little bit of traffic so much, find another way to travel....

I live in Riverdale and agree wholeheartedly with Paul's comments. It seems the majority of people crossing the bridge into Riverdale in the morning are only coming to drop off kids, then leave again. Time to think about alternative ways to commute besides driving, folks.

You should be a city planner if you aren't already. The solution to tragic congestion? Don't drive anywhere.

I suggest putting the same type of roundabout as they have on 6th ave, right smack dab in the middle of the bridge. Then for the grand opening we can have a kumbiya moment and roast marshmallows all sitting around our new God. I mean new "traffic control device".

To all my friends who are home owners in Riverdale. Homeowners near the Black St roundabout had their city taxes go up a lot for "street improvement fees ". How much will yours go up for a new bridge?

This intersection has long been a choke point for efficient traffic flow. Of the two options, a circle and the lights, the lights are probably the better choice.
Will it back things up? This wouldn't be an issue if parents didn't drive their kids to the schools in Riverdale. On school holidays, the traffic both into and out of Riverdale is drastically reduced.
So, if you are concerned about traffic backing up, walk, bike or take the bus and quit whining.

well lets see how much this backs up the traffic out and in to Riverdale another great idea from the monkeys at city hall.
