THE AFTERMATH – Gold Originals by Charlotte was broken into Saturday morning by cutting through the wall (top). A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE – Gold Originals by Charlotte's 25th anniversary was marred by Saturday morning's break-in.
Sixty thousand dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from Gold Originals by Charlotte early Saturday morning – the day before the store's 25th anniversary.
Sixty thousand dollars' worth of jewelry was stolen from Gold Originals by Charlotte early Saturday morning – the day before the store's 25th anniversary.
The thief, or thieves, gained entrance to the Main Street store through a back hallway in the building (204 Main St.), cutting through a wall and crawling into the store's back room, Gerry Briemon, the store owner's husband, said in an interview this morning.
The back room is not rigged with an alarm.
Once inside, the thief or thieves appear to have broken through the wood panel above an inside door, and climbed over the door frame.
It was in this next room that the intruder or intruders set off the motion-detector alarm at around 2:15 a.m.
The thief or thieves then proceeded to the store front and office where Briemon does his jewelry cleaning.
A garbage can had been emptied of its contents and the bag apparently used to hold the stolen goods, Briemon said.
One display case was ripped open, the contents cleared out.
Among the items stolen from the store were:
• various pieces of gold nugget jewelry, including necklaces, bracelets, and rings;
• a gold nugget with diamonds;
• men's gold chains; and
• busts used to display jewelry.
The thief or thieves left through the back of the store and out a rear door of the building.
While the store has experienced previous burglaries, this was the first time it was broken into.
Charlotte Briemon, the owner, said she was devastated when she heard about the theft.
It was a "big downer” on the 25th anniversary events held the following day.
"You work hard to try to get ahead in a small business, you struggle from year to year and to have that amount taken from us is very devastating,” she said.
The business is not insured, she noted, because companies won't insure jewelry stores.
"So it's a complete loss, unless it's recovered.”
Gerry Briemon said customers should keep their eye out for an "our loss is your gain” sale.
The couple is asking that anyone with any information call the store at 668-7928 or the RCMP at 667-5555 or 667-5551.
Police cannot release any information regarding the theft at this time because it's still under investigation, Const. Dean Hoogland told the Star late this morning.

Fact: Goods were stolen.
Fact: Goods were displayed.
Fact: Goods were displayed how long before it was stolen.
Fact: RCMP promotes "do not leave valuables to be seen in your car" simply because they "might" be stolen.
Displaying expensive goods and not regarding whether the probability the goods will get stolen in time is moot in itself.

Jackie are you saying all business owners who have items of value in their stores are asking for thieves to enter and rob them?!?!?! You must then also think people with nice cars, nice homes furnished well, have nice stereos, recreation equipment etc. also deserve to be robbed.
Sounds like this business is a solid family run show that simply wants to earn their keep, give back to the community if/when they can. The commuinity in turn robs from them and then judges them.
Interesting

Theft is theft whether the item was out in the open or concealed is a moot point.
Karma goes where Karma should I hope these folks get whats is their due.
To the persons being critical of the shops practices shame on you for being so critical. I fully imagine you would be up in arms over such a thing were it to happen to you. This situation is no different than someone coming into your house and taking that prized possession of yours that you display proudly.

Onus is on the owner to secure his or her goods, stealing is another matter of the human mind that goes far beyond some $60k of an element that consists of 79 protons/electrons and 118 neutrons.

Sixty thousand dollars' worth of anything that portable should have been locked-up out of sight.

Gold Originals is a great local business. The owners are extremely helpful and pleasant and I was very sorry to read about their loss.
Wishing them the best of luck going forward.

charlene: Maybe you should read what I said again because you seem to be confused. I said if you can't insure your goods, then REMOVE THEM NIGHTLY. How exactly am I supporting this theft? You state I said this theft is OK in my opinion. What are you talking about? There are too many posters on here who are blinded by emotion and just jump and label someone whatever they chose to. I really can't have sympathy for the owners here. That's not supporting theft. Leaving that amount of gold was asking for this to happen. Please think before you speak.

@ Barb and Jackie did you not read the story? It states quite clearly.
" The business is not insured, she noted, because companies won't insure jewelry stores.
"So it's a complete loss, unless it's recovered.”
They couldn't insure, and why would that make theft ok? If they got their money back? Everybody's rates go up when there are insurance claims. There are no victimless crimes.

This might sound harsh but it's the truth. If you can't buy insurance, then the most expensive items in your store should of been removed daily. Having that amount in your store was just asking for this to happen. Theft sucks. But sometimes it's preventable.

I am so sorry. Your store has the best reputation for making the most unique and beautiful pieces, and treating each customer with the utmost of respect and care. I still recall that you were one of the local jewelry shops to donate an amazing Yukon themed piece for a fundraising effort that would help local youth, a few years back. Not many business owners are that generous. I pray all is returned to you with interest.

Watch the buy and sell groups on Facebook. Then again these items are either going to be on EBAY or shipped elsewhere (like Vancouver). I doubt the idiots who did this would stick around town.

That sucks - bought there for years. They would really go out of their way to find what you were looking for. My heart goes out to those hard working people. They don't deserve this!!!!!
