Police have recovered the body of a young officer who disappeared in the Stewart River near Mayo the evening of July 13.
Two Yukon RCMP members recovered the body of Const. Michael Potvin during a search of the Stewart River last Friday evening, police said Monday afternoon.
The body was located about 50 kilometres downstream from the boat launch where he was last seen.
‘We are relieved to be able to bring some closure to this sad and tragic event, not only for the family and loved ones of Constable Potvin but for all the searchers, volunteers and the extended RCMP family,” said Chief Supt. Peter Clark.
Potvin's body was sent to Whitehorse and then on to Vancouver on Sunday.
Because the 26-year-old Mayo officer died in a work-related incident, an autopsy will be conducted later this week.
Meanwhile, a planned memorial service for Potvin will proceed as scheduled.
Sgt. Don Rogers said Monday at least nine officers are heading to Ottawa to participate in the funeral, to be held at Saint Patrick's Basilica.
Potvin was originally from the Ottawa Valley town of Osgoode. His wife, who is seven months pregnant, is currently in Ontario with family members, police say.
Rogers said four Yukon RCMP members will attend as an honour guard because they worked with Potvin, either in Watson Lake, where he was originally stationed, or in Mayo.
Clark will also be there, as well as other members who knew him.
Not all the members who would like to go will be able to because their services will be required in the Yukon, said Rogers.

My sadness for the late Constable Potvin and condolences to the family. But the officer was found Friday evening. We are just hearing of it Tuesday. The northern news outlets seem to be getting better???
